Hindsight is caplocked.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 February 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

Despite the best intentions of that fellow in the second link, the capslock is going nowhere anytime soon. We haven't even got rid of scroll lock yet. I mean, what the fuck is scroll lock?

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Thursday, 1 February 2007 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

I don't seem to have scroll lock

UART variations (ex machina), Thursday, 1 February 2007 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

Caps Lock is hell on hunt-and-peck typists like me who are looking at the keyboard rather than the screen. I write whole reams of upper-case shit before I realize what I've done. It always starts after an "a," NATURALLY.
I've thought of removing the key with a screwdriver, but then even more dust and crap would sift into my keyboard. Plus the keyboard wouldn't look so purty.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

cPSLOCK. I don't remember the last time i pressed it intentionnnaly. I'm sure it has it's uses, but it needs to be put sopmewhere else on the keyboard. Why not put @ next to A instead, then typos wouldn't be so bad.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

Replacing capslock with the @ is a mighty fine idea, actually.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

You can set CapsLock to be Ctrl on the Mac. Thass much better.

I ALWAYS HOLD THE SHIFT KEY WHEN I DO THIS ANYWAY

PRESSING IT REALLY HARD MAKES ME FEEL TENSE AND I E-SCREAM WAY BETTER

EXCEPT WHEN I HAVE TO DO DASHES... OR PERIODS. REALLY KILLS MY FLOW, KNOMSHANG

Will M. (Will M.), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

tHE BEST IS WHEN IT'S ACCIDENTALLY SWITCHED ON THOUGH.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

YEAH I JUST HOLD DOWN SHIFT WITH MY LEFT PINKY WHEN I TYPE ALLCAPS IN FACT I AM DOING THAT RIGHT NOW

ath (ath), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

AS I TYPE THIS SENTENCE

TESTING TESTING ONE TWO I AM HOLDING DOWN SHIFT WITH MY LEFT PINKY PINKY PINKY

ath (ath), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Here's a wrinkle: on my work Mac, if I put caps lock on and then accidentally use Shift in my typing, it assumes the whole thing is meant to be capped, and fixes the problem FOR me. However on our home PC it will UNCAP if I accidentally hit Shift (ie "dEAR ILX). The latter is logically following the rules, but the former is ultimately more helpful for regular use (unless there are coding applications etc).

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 1 February 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe the iPod marketing dude went "shit, caps lock!" after two characters then decided to leave it in.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 1 February 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...
one year passes...

I've got a teeny tiny little aluminum iMac keyboard. One of the most annoying aspects of it is that it doesn't have a numeric keypad off to the side, just the row of numbers on top. To further make the situation even more aggravating, the + key has to be shifted or else it's just an =.

So if you got a list of numbers to add, you can't just look at the list and rattle off your calculations without having to hit shift+= between each number. I go online and look around to see if I could somehow turn my Caps Lock key into a Shift Key instead, and all I could find were messagboards and Yahoo answers idiots bemoaning the fact that a Caps Key even exists.

How fucking fat are your left pinky fingers to have the problem of hitting Caps Lock instead of the Shift key when typing, so much that there are entire YouTubes devoted to prying the buttons off your keyboard? Are these same people somehow hitting the Enter key when trying to use the right Shift key.

Anyway. I still haven't discovered a way to do basic arithmetic on my iMac without having to sometimes press two buttons at once.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

my fingers are quite fat - Imagine Kingpin grasping Ant Man's tiny head.
Cpas lock is useful for when you want to make your letters TALL!

PP:

Pretty sure Apple still sell a keyboard with the numberpad, but seriously, fuck them for making a keyboard with a numberpad a luxury item.

One of these?

I've got an old keyboard in the closet that is NOT Bluetooth and is NOT stylish and WEIGHS more than a carrot, but fuck me if I'm going to dig around and hook that thing up whenever I want to add up a quick budget. I've got a calculator too, but it was in the other room though.

I guess more my point is, why can't I reprogram the keys on a keyboard to do what I want them to do? And of - all - the - keys on a standard keyboard, Caps Lock is the one that's driving people to their screwdrivers? I find it handy to have

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

I thought you could make the keyboard become a number pad - something like iop corresponds to 789? must have to switch on functionality somehow

I don't know if this is deeper into the system OS than you want to dig, but there's some info out there

alternately/allegedly you can use this software to map your own number pad onto the keyboard

AT Apple, innovation often means sacrifice. Their motto is "No one needs more than two usb ports"
