Bess has the red nose that I associate with rowdies, but look at the shifty appearance of Quesadilla's eyes. It's gonna be a tough game.

"Puppy Bowl II Averaged 690,000 viewers for its broadcast (a 23 percent increase over Puppy Bowl I), equivalent to MSNBC's rating for the State of the Union address. 5 million people in total watched Puppy Bowl II throughout its three airings."

???

milo z (mlp), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

Bowl-Cam - A camera at the bottom of the puppies water bowl, with a wide-angle lens allows viewers to watch the puppies drink water up close.

Puppy Penalty - When a puppy relieved himself on the floor, a referee would blow a whistle, call "Illegal Motion", throw a flag over the droppings and scoop them up.

Puppies are given a wide variety of chew-toys and bones to play with, and they are free to tackle, bite, and do as they wish. Jazz music is added in to the clips in post-production.

PUPPY BOWL!!!!!

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

I am sure Alamo Drafthouse is having a big Superbowl XXLwhatever viewing event. I feel I should insist that they counterprogram with a Puppy Bowl screening as well.

Plan the Perfect Puppy Bowl Party

FOR HUMANS:

In keeping with the theme, some of the food should be related to puppies. For example, serve hot dogs and make cookies in the shape of dog bones. Children will enjoy eating ice cream out of their own personalized doggy dish.

However, in a nod to more traditional game-watching fare, we've also provided some classic party recipes.

These delicious recipes from the Discovery Home Channel will keep your human guests from feeling hungry.

* Atomic Chicken Wings
* Thunderbolt Chili
* Homemade Salsa and Chips
* Hummus

Other than that, it was awesome.

Kitten halftime show!

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Monday, 5 February 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

My girlfriend's favorite was the big white fuzzy one with the huge ass. Wait, I thought this was the Super Bowl thread!?

def zep (calstars), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

I heard Molly ooh-ing and squealing for fifteen minutes in the other room. Then I heard her scream, "PUPPY BOWL!" Thank you for letting me know what she was on about.

Someone should have thrown a flag on Rex Grossman and scooped him up.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

Puppy Bowl just gets better every year! That was great.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 5 February 2007 08:03 (eighteen years ago)

The samoyeds were too cute! Awww, precious fuzziness. We had the superbowl on downstairs, for the boys, and puppybowl on upstairs, for the kids, and I sat upstairs. much cuter!

lyra (lyra), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

Puppy Bowl is the best thing ever! My cat Biff was really into it. He sat on my lap and watched all of it. He especially like the Kitty Halftime show, which was great! The hissing! The slapping! The falling over!

The samoyeds looked like little baby polar bears that I wanted to hug. I loved how at the end, they were all pooped.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Someone should have thrown a flag on Rex Grossman and scooped him up.

And replaced him with a puggle.

I liked it when the puppies would paw all the water out of the bowl and the ref would call, "Time out. More water."

Is "Puppy Bowl Referee" a reasonable career aspiration?

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

that would be my dream job.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

That Pedigree ad with teh puppies in cages who "just want to go home" made me cry like a girl. Point to be noted: PMS is coming on in full effect.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

The golden retriever puppy was my favorite, I think. He was way into getting all of the water out of the bowl. Also, he'd get scrappy with puppies twice his size, and he had the puppy fluff fur.

ugh. me too. also the humane society ad. i can't take it. 1000x worse than save the children or the guy telling you not to smoke and then you find out that he's already dead.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

I think every Sunday, Animal Planet should have Puppy Ball, i.e. a game opposite real football games. I'll take puppies any day.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

i watched nearly all of this. i want to sleep on a bed made out of (living, breathing) samoyeds.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

We had the superbowl on downstairs, for the boys, and puppybowl on upstairs, for the kids, and I sat upstairs. much cuter!

did anyone here watch BOTH? (i did)

joseph (joseph), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

The puggle and the boxer puppies were my faves. I guess I relate to the super-hyperactive ones.

N.i.c.o.l.e (Ex Leon), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

the puggle made me miss my puggle. :/

joseph, I read on wikipedia that the nomadic people who invented samoyeds used to have the dogs sleep ON TOP of them to keep them warm!

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

so much better than the super bowl!

I WANT THE DVD.

Yeah he is at my parents' house until I can move into an apartment that allows dogs. xxpost. OH MALCOLM MOMMY MISSES YOU.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Pike, even though he was taunting me, suggested that we buy the DVD for Biff, as it's now his favorite tv show (it used to be dog shows).

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

ugh. me too. also the humane society ad. i can't take it. 1000x worse than save the children or the guy telling you not to smoke and then you find out that he's already dead.

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

My husband keeps saying I am going to turn into a crazy animal hoarder because every time I see those commercials I want to adopt another dog.

N.i.c.o.l.e (Ex Leon), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

I feel the exactly the same way. I even perused petfinder today.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

omg saddest thing ever. They should have run that during the Super Bowl

milo z (mlp), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

wait, it deleted teh code

milo z (mlp), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

ok no embedding - Pedigree commercial

Is that Fox Mulder?

milo z (mlp), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Did y'all see this interesting, at times, NYT article? About 'new breeds' and what it means to breed dogs and lots of other stuff. I think it was a bit evengelical at times, but still of interest. Warning: gross dog impregnation techniques toward the end.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/04/magazine/04dogs.t.html?em&ex=1170824400&en=87aede8ea631b413&ei=5087%0A

Mary (Mary), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

oh god! That commercial! I just watched it again. It makes me want to run out and adopt an old dog that no one else loves.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

i saw that ad on several other stations yesterday as well, so hopefully it will encourage people to (responsibly) adopt.

mary, i read that article. it really depressed me.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

and the attitude of the pug breeders really made me angry: "we run pug rescue services. when people start abandoning puggles, we will not take them."

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

But Pug Rescue, Beard said, is strictly for pugs, not puggles. “Who’s going to take care of that dog when the fad fades?” she asked. She went on, detailing the pug’s worst qualities, transitioning into the beagle’s and concluding, finally, that the puggle must be “a shedding, snorting wanderlust dog that’s going to pee all over your house.”

I find most breeders to be pretty creepy, imho. They write off mixed breeds as some sort worthless genetic garbage, but in my experience mutts are usually a lot more healthy and mentally stable than purebreds.

N.i.c.o.l.e (Ex Leon), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

that's the woman that had a litter euthanized because they weren't purebreed. granted, that's much better than abandoning them but still... totally creepy.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

my dog is a mutt and he is superb. he has hybrid vigour. i do not care about the height of his withers. yesterday i baked him oatmeal cookies, he is so happy knowing the container is full, he has been strutting around like a little woollen man of wealth.

estela (estela), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Those people are nuts. Puggles and pug-mutts are still going for crazy dollars.

All unwanted puggles can come live at my house. I will let them pee on my housemate's bed.

kingfishy (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

That woman sounds like a serious piece of work. But there's one reasonable point, which is that every rescue network can only handle so much traffic, and the fad (or demand, if you prefer) for puggles is definitely going to rebound at some point, not necessarily because puggles are a "problem" cross, but simply because a certain percentage of people suck and will be bad pet owners.
