srsly, tho, hit with a BOMB? in the face???

grbchv! (skowly), Saturday, 3 February 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

Needed a better thread title.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Which is why I didn't see it in the first place.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I wish people would just say exactly what it's about in the thread title.

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, yeah, absolutely horrendous. What you've got to remember is that Italian Ultras aren't football hooligans in your English "run around like a bunch of apes waving snooker balls in a sock" sense, but they, like ultras down in Argentina and Brazil, are basically well-organized criminal gangs. Which is what makes me think this was a specifically organized attack under the cover of football violence. Story going round is that it was, at some level, a revenge attack for that guy killed at G8 a few seasons back, but that just sounds like cover. My guess is that the Catania police decided to crack down on Mafia activities in their area, and this is the Ultras sending a friendly reminder to them in the way they know how.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

God knows where we go from here though. After Moggigate, the Tardelli incident, and those two Juventus youth team players dying, I kinda hoped this would be a healthy year of rebuilding for Italian football. Consolidation if you will. So not gonna happen.

I worry that Flickring for images would turn me into one of those middle-aged, middle-class dicks who jack off over Cass Pennant books.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Tardelli? You don't mean Pessotto, do you? What happened to Tardelli?

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yes I do, why did I type Tardelli?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I've clarified the title here a bit and locked the other one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps it's not the most appropriate response, but there's something slightly funny about Inter desperately trying to win the league for 17 years, and when they eventually do so they can't really celebrate it because they're just awarded it months after the end of the season for coming second behind cheating Juventus, but then with all their big rivals hit with points deductions and relegations the way is left clear for them to stroll away with the title, which they're well on course to do, and then suddenly all football is banned.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Plus the greatest season for Sicilian football teams in living memory being kinda soured by, you know, their fans killing someone.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Is this [death] actually unusual, though? When I lived in Italy I can definitely remember reports of bombs being thrown, of supporters getting killed, images of spectacular violence far worse than anything seen in this country for decades (if ever). Not to mention the incident with the moped.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

http://football.guardian.co.uk/continentalfootball/story/0,,2006847,00.html

...Police also located a stash of arms yesterday hidden inside Catania's Massimino football stadium, the scene of the rioting. Baseball bats and iron balls, described by police as offensive weapons, were found in a room used by the stadium's caretaker, who was arrested after he tried to stop the raid by setting dogs on police officers.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/02/06/tragedy_must_bring_change_to_t.html

...In England the game's second chance was partly paid for in Italian blood when the combination of Heysel, Bradford and Hillsborough achieved a kind of critical mass. The subsequent bourgeoisification of English football, accelerated by the invention of the Premiership, created the conditions in which ticket prices could be raised so high that, combined with effective security precautions, they eventually deterred hooligans, whose violent activities have largely been displaced, in a diluted form, to the lower divisions.

In Italy, by contrast, you can still turn up at a Serie A match and buy a ticket for less than a tenner. A cursory search at the turnstile is unlikely to reveal the flare taped to your inner thigh. Inside the stadium the facilities are rudimentary and your activities will be neither observed by the kind of closed-circuit cameras that scan every inch of an English stadium nor supervised by any kind of rigorous stewarding.

Why would higher ticket prices deter hooligans? Why do people keep assuming they don't have jobs? The kind of obsessives that go to every match home and away, or follow England all round Europe, wouldn't be put off by an extra £20 on the entrance fee. I think he's mentioned the right things, but in the wrong order. I'd say the security aspects (CCTV everywhere, lots of stewards) coupled with all-seater stadia (so you can see exactly where everyone is) and all-ticket matches and membership schemes (so you know exactly who everyone is) and mass banning orders made hooliganism inside grounds more or less disappear. This made the game more attractive to people who would never previously have gone, and they were prepared to pay higher prices.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

do you think the role of mdma on the terraces in the late 80s, in changing english football, is underplayed and glossed over. or do you think that it was overstated in the first place?

Friendly Tree (688), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think it's ever been underplayed, at least in this bitch and places like it. didn't ticket prices have a big bump at about the same time?

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

Ticket prices started shooting up when the grounds were converted to all-seater, from about 1992 onwards. I think hooliganism *inside grounds* was on the decline after Heysel in 1985.

YAY HERE WE GO AGAIN. Maybe they'll close the stadiums for THREE weeks this time before deciding to do fuck all.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 11 November 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

200 metre shot?

Just got offed, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

I think they should withdraw Italy from Saturday's game at Hampden as a mark of respect.

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

or of terror of real hard b*stards, like scottish football fans, as opposed to poncy italians.

darraghmac, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

Real hard bastards don't sing "Doe-a-Deer" tbh.

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

Could have sworn this thread used to have D Boyle's doing a big ol' Nabisco-on-football post?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

There was another about the Italian "fixing" scandal, it may have been there (also featured someone else who seems to have vanished - Lovelace or something like that?).

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's here: Juventus and co "demoted to Serie B", say reports

Features this classic DJ Martianism:

where the heck is treviso?

A: Between the Alps and Venice
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treviso

Treviso is a town in the Veneto region of Italy. It is the capital of Treviso province. The municipality has 82,112 inhabitants (December 2004): some 80,000 live in the urban center proper, while the city hinterland has a population of some 170,000.

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Has plank Prodi even BEEN to Stadio La Favorita this season?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

There was another thread following the trouble at Roma last season but I can't find it - I think there was a Lovelace vs Boyler FITE.

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

^ I think that was the standard 'Liverpool won't win blah, blah, Euro' thread for last season. IIRC Lovelace is a Swedish Milan fan living in Britain who hates all things British.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Found it.

Kicks off shortly after here: Liverpool won't win the Champions League or UEFA Cup 2006/07

onimo, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Italian fans and police acting like neanderthal cunts shocker. Dig up Giuseppe Meazza and fuck his dust, that's what I say. Fucking arseholes. Maybe we should ban them until their police can act like they belong to a civilised country. Oh, I forgot, this is Italy, land of the pathetic state and the simpering apologists.

Gosh, I was rather extreme of the opinion in that thread.

The Boyler, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that's old ILX for you.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

Lovelace is a Swedish Milan fan living in Britain who hates all things British.

I certainly hope this is nothing but an attepmt at humour. Do you think I'd move to England if I hate Britain? The only thing I've said is that I hate English football.

Lovelace, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

Italian football seems a bit more entertaining than it used to be - probably why they're not as successful

Tom D., Tuesday, 13 November 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, we should really have won two World Cups last year.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

should have had the UEFA Cup as well as the CL

Just got offed, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

I meant the club sides obviously

Tom D., Tuesday, 13 November 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

PLANK Italians not successful ENOUGH. is victory across the board too much to ASK for?

Just got offed, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha, I plum forgot Milan squeaked thru against Celtic to go on to win the Champions League!

Presumably gay prostitutes are more expensive to hire than straight ones.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

Italian men are more into transexuals tho, aren't they?

Tom D., Tuesday, 29 April 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

Here's heterosexual former Italian national team star Francesco Coco, who accidentally wandered into a gay bar a few months back:

Totaly agree, I guess that the should make a law that porhibts Gays from playing Football. It's a men's sport, simple as that.

And Pinto agrees with him

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

They don't fit in. Because of their attitudes, the way they act, the effort involved, they just can't cope with it.

Like English footballers playing for England.
