Let's start with the icelandic hotdog, best served at 4am. Made of lamb and featuring crispy onions and mysterious sauce.

Comes from a place like this

I think a theme from this thread will be Bill clinton has eaten here. He's definitely been to the above stall. President and drunky food connoisseur.

Ed (dali), Monday, 5 February 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if Clinton has eaten here, but he should have. The now closed, but forever glorious in my mind, Fattouch. Home of MTL's best shish taouk.

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

It's not on any menu I know of, but just go to a Greek diner and ask them to make it for you. You will not be disappointed.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

I just went out and had a gyro wrap with fries for lunch, in celebration of this thread. Sadly, I am not drunk though.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

I don't favor gyros with fries in, in my experience that was only a Northern Greek thing and I like the Southern/Athenian version better, made with veg and yogurt and cukes. But I'm glad it made you happy, Molly-doll. You can be drunk in just a few hours.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you explain to me why some gyro is thick, and some is ultra-thin and dry. Is it a regional thing? The folks who owned the Greek restaurant that I used to work at were from Thessaloniki, and they had the lovely thick gyro.

The fries were on the side of this gyro wrap. This one had lots of cucumbers and lovely yogurt sauce. Now I'm suffering from an intense food coma.

Oh, I probably will be drunk in a few hours. It's the season finale of Campus Ladies, which is currently my favorite show.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I want a good kebab now. Sadly, most of the takeout houses round here are dreadul, so I usually just wait until I get home, it which point generally cheese on toast is the beer-soaker-upper of choice.

Also deej OTM about drunken horchata.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Does horchata = orxata, because, if so, OTM.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Molly: I can't remember! It was my first exposure to gyros EVER so it took me a while to notice and make note of the differences. I just remember that as we went north, the gyros got carb-ier and less sauce-y -- in any case your lunch sounds delish.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

g00blar (gooblar), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

I have a genius plan for a restaurant:

1) Build it where lots of drunk college kids might be found.

2) Keep it open late.

3) Have only a giant griddle and a giant deep fryer.

4) Stock all the frozen junk-food type stuff that you can - chicken strips, waffles, burger patties, sausage, french toast, jalapeno poppers, mozzerela sticks, breaded mushrooms, etc.

5) Provide ample sauces - ranch dressing, nacho cheese, salsa, maple syrup, chocolate sauce, etc.

6) Build it like a prison dining room, with bolted down seating, tile and stainless everything for easy spraying down with a hose and disinfectant. Sauces and such would be as vandal-proof as possible.

7) Allow people to buy stuff by the pound in some way - basically, you say "give me a waffle, with two chicken strips, ten breaded mushrooms, and some chili".

8) Customer then covers their food with whatever sauces they like.

9) The added bonus would be bins of crushed Doritos, potato chips, pretzels, etc. that could then be applied on top of the sauces for extra texture. These would be known as Crumblins™, which would be the name of the establishment. There would be a cute skunk with the same name as the mascot.

I was kind of fucked up with some friends when we came up with this but I think it would probably work. But it would be so not fun to have to run a place like this and deal with the drunk people every night until 4 am.
