Is anyone giving up anything?

I thought about it for a few minutes then decided if anyone was going to deprive me of something and piss me off it wouldn't be me myself. This is the same decision I made about New Years Resolutions.

Have stopped smoking (anything) Have left GF of 4 yrs. Have also resolved to do some work instead of compulsively reading message boards.

Err... ARSE!

Normally I only give up chocolate because that is like my number one indulgence but this time it is ALL sweets, cigarettes and cheese. I would give up other things but the boyfriend would get mad. At first I'm grumpy but then there is that power of denying.

Evangeline, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the idea of giving up a girlfriend for Lent. How did she take it?

N., Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm having my pancakes today, because I'm a Tobist.

DV, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why on earth would I want to give anything up? I'm not Jesus, you know.

Walking around Grand Central terminal yesterday, I began to notice that all the office workers had black marks on their foreheads. I began to notice they were crosses. It was creepy, to see all these supposedly modern and rational people in office garb smearing their faces with ash in the name of a 2000 year old religious cult from the middle east. I got a distinct sense of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'.

It didn't seem to be affecting sales of expensive cheese and chocolate in the Grand Central food mall, though.

I took the elevator up to HIS, the Japanese travel agency, and booked my ticket to Tokyo. The Japanese were as godless as me, thank god. Nobody in that lucid, friendly and rational office had any marks on their faces.

"All the office workers": really, Momus?

Tim, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, 65%. But a lot, because there was a church near the station where they were standing on the sidewalk 'ashing' just about everyone who passed. I think people were wearing their ash pretty much the same way they display the stars and stripes these days; in a talismanic way. Since I've never seen this before, and didn't know it was even done, I was freaked out. 'Hey look, there's someone with a smudgy mark on his forehead! There's another! They're all over!' They were black, white, Chinese, but they were all a certain kind of midtown office worker, people who already remind me of bodysnatchers. This just underlined that. They looked like they'd got photocopier toner on them. But it was the ash of Christ.

Momus, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

photocopier toner is the ash of the body of our lord jebus.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At least it has nothing to do with the band Ash, which would be much more worrying.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Faddishness involving religious symbols has only a tenuous link to religiosity - loads of the houses near me had those Jewish candle- pyramid things in the windows at Christmas, for instance. I doubt it's any more meaningful than Madonna sporting a bindi.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lily, it's *because* you're not jesus that you should give something up. Perhaps try giving up alighting the tube at a certain station and instead plan other exciting ways of getting to a destination?

alix, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom - those aren't Jewish candles, they're traditional German (i think) Christmas decorations. the Jewish ones (menorah?) are flat at the top i.e. all the candles reach the same height

michael, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, and menorah have nine candles, not seven

michael, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops! Ah well. A-religious me. Anyway my point about faddishness still stands. :)

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A favourite Buddhist proverb: when the fool points to heaven, the sage looks at the pointing finger.

I would like everyone to consider giving up Christianity for Lent.

Momus, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I did. Oddly, I never wanted it back.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have issues with the notion that modern man is rational.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan makes a good point.
