Broken limbs set in plaster. Lovely.

Have you ever had one and had it 'signed'?

I ask because I've never had a cast on and feel as though I missed out on some right of passage.

If you were to break a bone now and have a cast, would you let friends and family sign it or would you prefer to keep it pristine?

What's the etiquette of signing casts?

It seems to be unusual these days to get a proper cast that people can sign. They prefer these 'breathable' casts, and you can't write on them, boo hiss.

(I have never had a plaster cast and now I never will)

Also, this thread made me think of plaster casters but it would be rude to derail it so early on.

Anyway, I had a old style pot cast one on for 2 weeks maybe 15 years ago, after I fell off my bike. It was a precaution, b/c they thought I might have broken my forearm (as it turned out, I hadn't). It's not all that, there were 2 gross things about it - after a couple of days, even w/careful cleaning, it started to smell pretty bad, which was gross, worse still was the freakish sight of my arm when it came off - all the muscle had wasted away, it looked really mutated and grotesque, yeurgh.

I had one when I broke my arm aged about 16, and several members of the then Scotland rugby team signed it. I wasn't allowed to keep it when they cut it off.

Pash OTM about mankiness of post-cast skin. My arm was all weak and yellow and skin was just falling off it (this was after about six weeks). Yuk.

why couldn't you keep it alisa? What were they afraid you were going to do with it.

I don't know. I never asked. It was probably too stinky and horrible and covered in flaky skin that hadn't seen sunlight, soap or water for six weeks, and very probably a health hazard as a result, only fit for incineration. Regardless of whether Gavin Hastings had scrawled on it.
