so says ARC chairman fred ross in 'pulling back the curtain,' an article posted to the art renewal center website.

http://www.artrenewal.org/articles/2001/ASOPA/bad_art_good_art1.asp

it's mostly standard rubbishing of "the modernists" (who were 'intent upon proving the two-dimensionality of the canvas,' apparently) and i'm not so much interested in discussion along these lines, but rather am curious about the general platform of the art renewal center: namely, that there's this whole boatload of 19th century painters & sculptors who retained the technique and skill of the old masters and so had to be carefully written out of history by a movement that no longer cared for (and were in fact deeply suspicious of) such things. really poor thinking throughout, but a lot of the artists he champions are really, really good, i think.

the website has some pretty breathtaking hi-rez scans of a lot of this stuff and i'm actually really taken with some of it. like this bouguereau...i'd never heard of him, and though some of it reminds me of those 'photorealistic paintings' hawked at mall kiosks, it's hard to deny something like this:

also there's some really cool stuff from the orientalists which, even though they're mostly portraying people and customs that never existed outside of western imagination, is pretty damn captivating.

anyone know more about this stuff?

I'm always so fascinated by the Geir Hongros of the world.

Though, I do and always have found much of this kind of art beautiful. I agree that there has been a tendency to dismiss it. I especially always loved Waterhouse...he appealed to and continues to appeal to my inner 12 year old Romantic.

I have never been a total fan of Picasso tbh with some exceptions, but there is no denying that creatively he was an absolute frigging force.

nothing better than defending one of the all-time greats against this foul besmirchment?

curiously i was doing the same in person last night, although i'm no fanboy and i agree he was often inclined to do a great impression of a guy who couldn't draw for beans.

xps aye that's about my view calzino.
