Expensive Chocolates

Valentines Day is approaching and I've been wondering how much is too much to spend on chocolates? The worlds most expensive chocolates come in at $250 each, or $2,600 per pound.

I think the most expensive chocolates I've ever had have been from Thorntons, and that's not saying much at all.

I'm not the biggest chocolate fan so I'd have trouble appreciating a good one.

Does expensive mean best in this field?

leonidas chocolates - do yourself the favour. i consider them quite expensive, however the quality really does measure up to the cost.

anhellica (angelurker), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

butlers are good. www.butlers.ie

their hot chocolate is made using this large cauldron of molten choc...and half a ton of cream. it must kill many brain cells

Man, that's almost McGriddle's level corporate stamped edibles.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, it didn't come across that way to me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

These strike me as elegantly designed and presented whereas a McGriddle seems gross.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, they do it on Hershey's bars, right?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ghigggrraralaldldelttelltrraltti is WAAY overpriced and overrated.

Black and Green's is apparantly very good. Want it in another shape? Melt it and make it! LAZY SHIT!!!
Oh sorry.

Yeah, I find anything that includes a lecithin of some kind has a waxy pastiness that makes it not worth eating. it raises the melt temp too high -_-

They're a total rip-off, them. See incredibly dense expose here:
http://www.dallasfood.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=78

(Summary: Made from good-but-not-earth shattering chocolate; remoulded by clots who make it worse, put in nice tin with 6000000000% markup)

stet (stet), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, the bottom of their conclusion page has some good recommendations:

stet (stet), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

ha! this is funny:

To make some "apples to oranges" comparisons, Noka chocolates cost more than:

Foie gras -- $50 per pound
Domestic sturgeon caviar -- $275 per pound
American Wagyu and Japanese Kobe beef -- $100 to $300 per pound
Sterling silver -- $170 per pound
Marijuana in El Paso -- $350 per pound
A fat stack of dollar bills -- $454 per pound

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

They just opened a Miette Confisserie in Hayes Valley around the corner from my house and I tried the most amazing spicy aztec dark chocolate there. *droools*.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never heard of Noka but that article series was fascinating.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

definitely! when i have time, i'm gonna read the whole thing. so in-depth!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

all i knew about them was how expensive they were. "status" chocolates.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 February 2007 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

CocoaBella in San Francisco has an amazing selection of chocolates and a great online store. Their selection makes other high-end chocolatiers pale in comparison, both in terms of quality and quantity.

Leonidas and Godiva?!? You have got got to be kidding me! I can sort of understand Godiva, but Leonidas is just plain choco-junk.

My city has WAY too many chocolate shops.

I always thought Godiva was the worst.

Bnad (Bnad), Saturday, 10 February 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

To be honest I rarely think expnsive chocolates are worth the money esp/ when I consider how much Galaxy I can buy for the same price.

Edward Trifle (Ned Trifle IV), Saturday, 10 February 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Miette Confisserie Same as at the Ferry Building?

M. White (Miguelito), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I think so. It's a chain, I believe.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

the nyt weighs in.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Alex, what's the name of the chocolatier in the new Emporium mall? It's pretty good.

M. White (Miguelito), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

I like lindt chocolate best, it's not that expensive, I don't think.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

i used to like godiva when i was a kid (the heart-shaped ones were my favorite), but i now i think they have a kind of chemical taste.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Poco Dolce

M. White (Miguelito), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

i used to like godiva when i was a kid (the heart-shaped ones were my favorite), but i now i think they have a kind of chemical taste.

Yeah, they're really not that great for the price. I can get a valrhona bar for less than a godiva and the taste is so much more complex and rich. But part of that may just be me liking dark chocolate a lot more than I did when I was younger.

N.i.c.o.l.e (Ex Leon), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

There's a small-scale chocolate shop here in Chilmark (Chilmark Chocolates, naturally) that hires a lot of kids from the cerebral palsy camp. Sometimes it's a deaf kid behind the counter and you have to point and hold up fingers to tell him how much. They put him on duty even when the line of entitled summer-people stretches out the door and into the parking lot. I love that. It's the best chocolate I've ever had. The hazelnut squares and the buttercrunch are esp. fine.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 10 February 2007 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

I've gotten one of these a couple of times:

http://www.greenandblacks.com/files/products/bar-100g-mint.jpg

Incredibly rich and great. You literally can't finish the whole bar in one sitting because the richness overwhelms your mouth halfway through.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 10 February 2007 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

they are damn good....

I miss chocolate. I'm off dairy and wheat for ages now.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 February 2007 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

But hey, have you been feeling better?? Also, does dark chocolate even HAVE enough dairy to count as such? I'll bet you could get away with it.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 10 February 2007 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

maybe...I think the sugar is just as bad really. soy chocolate is actually pretty nice but I get bad headaches after I eat that too.

today I got a serious buzz out of eating OATIBIX...weetabix's wheat free cousin. it's so good.
