[UPDATE: NOW WITH FAQ GOODNESS] A bit earlier than planned, here's nuILX.

You'll have to register again to Register again to post. Some things are different, including the links at the top of the page. Some things are new, like Poll threads. Some things are completely gone, like Blog view and Trackbacks.

Some things are completely unchanged, like the Question/Answer format, and calls to ban Louis Jagger.

Because this is being run earlier than we expected, there may be some kinks, and some stuff might not work as you expect. There's also a need for polish in places (like the stylesheet!). But until we can see how well the basic stuff holds up, the code will be frozen. Give it time!

HI DERE.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

hooboy this is ugly as SIN people

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

this is strange

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

it looks much better with the style sheet disabled, put it that way

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

do killfile still work?

jessie monster, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

hooboy this is ugly as SIN people
Pls to read first post mention of polish.

stet, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

I am getting old and not dealing well with change :(

quincie, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah sorry guys but this is lame.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

No it's not lame, it just needs tweaking. I appreciate everyone's efforts on this--it is a thankless task indeed!

quincie, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

Current style makes my eyes hurt.

milo z, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

seriously who is in charge of the stylesheet let's fix this before there's a riot

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I agree it is a thankless task but still: it is ugly.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

say it with blood diamonds, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Techy codey people in not pretending to be typographers non-shocking non-headline. The promised land needs a little work, that is all.

Laurel, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

ugly like a fox

remy bean, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

wait, just kidding. just fucking ugly

remy bean, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

a few suggestions, usability-wise:
- put the thread title in a bigger font rather than the board title
- condense the top four lines (board title/thread title/two lines of links) -- if you have the stylesheet turned on, there's a fair amount of scrolling just to get to the first post
- add back links to individual posts? this was especially useful in long-ass threads

also i miss the ability to bookmark boards at the top :(

maura, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

remy bean, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for all your hard work!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I like it.

DavidM, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

a million thanks to all the hard workin folks who put this together.

Also OW MY EYES

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

also is there a way to customize the list of boards displayed up top? I'd be just as happy knowing IRE didn't exist, but being able to hop about to noize dudes and whatever the fuck else with ease and grace.

remy bean, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

so how long will we keep going btw here and sandbox?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, don't consider me ungrateful. just ornery. like vicente fox.

remy bean, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

There's a stylesheet tweak motherfuckers. The only one I'm making tonight. The font sizes are squee on this mac, but it's only calling for serif.

.stet., Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Many thanks to all concerned for getting this up and running

Ed, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

can i not change my display name anymore?

modestmickey, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Is the "later" option gonna be implemented soon. That's pretty essential.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Also, when I post something it throws out of the thread.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

you ungrateful fucks

cutty, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Hello all!
Formatting help = AWESOME idea!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

can i not change my display name anymore?
No. That's why you had to re-register, to save you being stuck with something daft from ye old days.

Is the "later" option gonna be implemented soon. That's pretty essential
Nothing is going to be implemented "soon". Nothing at all. Until we see how well this holds up. It hasn't even been stress-tested yet! Apart from maybe a stylesheet Tombot's workin on

.stet., Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Much better font. Thanks for everything, people who make magic box things happen.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

oh hi!

jh0shea, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ahh, Times New Roman. Much better. Thanks.

xero, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I didn't mean to sound ungrateful... Thanks for your hard work!

One more question: the font size on the page that shows all threads and on separate is quite different, is this because of my computer, or is it intentional?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

"separate threads"

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry if I sound stupid, but I have no idea what "stylesheet" or what have you means...

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

nuILX. . .separating the boys from the men.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

The HTML reference stuff at the bottom of the page is useful.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

this is like the high school poetry magazine version of ilx

kudos

gabbneb, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

Should this be the general bug report thread, or is there a separate place for that?

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

hrrm. it seems ok but i miss the bookmarks

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

gah, after you post it takes you back to new answers!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Default text size is too big. I don't want to have to change everytime I go to ILX.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

when you ask a new question, thread page says one new answer when really it's just one new question with no answers

cutty, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

?
hey?

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

CEASE! There's a place for that, and it's called HTML playground.

stet, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

okay. I was hoping to summarize a reference post on which characters are legal/illegal in link titles. oh well.

Edward III, Saturday, 10 March 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Still annoying to read without the dashes or indentation. I guess I'm worried people will just get used to it.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 12 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still sort of baffled as to why "--" makes the board any easier to read.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

the -- can probly be done with CSS anyways

Alan, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

It could indeed - for conformant browsers anyway - with

.name:before
{
content: "-- ";
}

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

oooh handy

blueski, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like people's names to be black, not blue, and regular, not italic. The two dashes denote "the above was BY them"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

If you a) have firefox; 2) install Stylish; and iii) create the following rule

@-moz-document domain(ilxor.com) {
.name, .date, .howlongago
{
font-style: normal;
}

.name a
{
color: #000;
text-decoration: none;
}

.name:before
{
content: "-- ";
}

}

then your dreams will come true.

Anything else?

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

hr
{
width: 300px;
border: 1px inset;
}

(going by how the sandbox looks)

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

edit for that last one::

hr
{
width: 300px!important;
border: 1px inset!important;
}

also

form+h3, form+h3+table /* hello could we get some classes or ids here ?!?! */
{
display:none;
}

could be useful if you find the formatting help intrusive.

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

If you don't care who started threads:

/* hack due to insufficient element embraceage */
div.thread li
{
font-size: 0;
}

div.thread li a, div.thread li em
{
font-size: 12pt;
font-style: normal;
}

div.thread em:before
{
content: " (";
}

div.thread em:after
{
content: ")";
}

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

V1.1 has -- and fixed-width HRs in it already.

.stet., Tuesday, 13 March 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

This will insert a visible unread messages marker. It's pretty ugly, but not much I can do about it. And I can't remember how the old one looked.

a[name=unread]
{
display: block;
width: 100%;
border-top: inset 2px;
margin-bottom: 2em;
}

a[name=unread]:after
{
content: "Unread";
}

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

xp - ok, well i'm just amusing myself here pretty much.

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

no, i am learning stuff.

i think there are formatting changes to be applied shortly though, so beware that all the above might break. oh, what stet said.

koogs, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

ok well just one more thing</columbo>... the unread marker behaves a bit oddly, this seems to work better with it, and looks less ugly - but looks a bit daft when there are no unread messages.

a[name=unread]+div hr
{
width: 100%!important;
border-top: inset 2px;
margin-bottom: 2em;
}

a[name=unread]+div hr:after
{
content: "Unread";
}

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

where's that new menu you devs were crowing about?

lfam, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

It's in the dev version. Can't roll it out till it's been tested, which is going on right now.

.stet., Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

how do you install these... things...

nathalie, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

The CSS stuff? Might be better to wait for the next code update. Otherwise...

1) go here and click install
2) after restart, go to tools-->add ons and click the options button for stylish
3) "write" a new style and just paste all the following into it

@-moz-document domain(ilxor.com) {
/*post signature stuff */
.name, .date, .howlongago
{
font-style: normal;
}

.name a
{
color: #000;
text-decoration: none;
}

.name:before
{
content: "-- ";
}

/* tween-post rule */
hr
{
width: 300px!important;
border: 1px inset!important;
}

/* kill the formatting help */
form+h3, form+h3+table
{
display:none;
}

/* hide who started threads */
div.thread li
{
font-size: 0;
}

div.thread li a, div.thread li em
{
font-size: 12pt;
font-style: normal;
}

div.thread em:before
{
content: " (";
}

div.thread em:after
{
content: ")";
}

/* add visible unread marker */
a[name=unread]+div hr
{
width: 100%!important;
margin-bottom: 2em;
}

a[name=unread]+div hr:after
{
content: "Unread";
}

}

ledge, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

V1.1 has -- and fixed-width HRs in it already.

YAY!

Matt, the dashes visually differentiate the body of the post from the author.

-- Spencer

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Although it could be said that the blue and italicized text do the same, the dashes break the vertical line.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

What happened to Tombot's changes that were going to take care of all this annoying style stuff (dashes, italics, etc.)?

Jordan, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

Although it could be said that the blue and italicized text do the same, the dashes break the vertical line.

Spencer Chow on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 1:37 PM (4 minutes ago)

And as you can see, the dashes matter even more when you're quoting someone.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I hit a thread earlier that had Skipping 6 messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all.. That's just nutty.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

the skipping messages thing in the middle is BAFFLING.

river wolf, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yea, please change it to the old way. Why did you guys think that you knew better than us about things?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

yeah--i can understand if you want to cut down on the number of posts shown, but cut it after the original post. showing the first fifty answers every time isn't necessary.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

xoxoxoxo!

mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

Such sweet words.
