Ha—I was so puzzled by y'all's complete indifference to this stuff, esp. the amazing David Elsewhere, that I googled "david elsewhere ilx" to see if it had been discussed to death already, and found this:
The Detroit Jit Scene...
Youtube has tons of clips of that, and nobody on ILX seems interested ... Breakdance, david elsewhere and crip walking have nothing to do with each other. ...

So this is the "I Love Everything Except Dance" message board, with the exception of the person who was drawing the above distinctions. Probably banned.

My mom saw Savion Glover a couple weeks ago doing this thing where he taps along with classical pieces. She sat down front, some of his sweat got on her!

I told off Gregory Hines once, when I was six years old. I got up on stage to show him my tap dance. After a while, he cut me off. I looked up at him and said, "I'M NOT DONE YET!" and proceeded to finish my dance. The local newspaper said I stole the show. Major turning point in my life here.

I saw one of the Savion Glover-with-classical shows, too. Amazing. He is my idol. I totally cribbed my style from him.

How did I not see one of these threads before. (Oh yeah, because I never come to ILE.)

I don't know what's wrong with me. I could watch those guys and the chicken noodle soup guys for hours, but thirty seconds of "high art" dancing like Alvin Ailey puts me to sleep. Enough "grace" already. Enough well-oiled perfect torsos! And don't get me started on stultifying professional ballroom dancing. Bleeaugh. We watched the championships on PBS, and I was so turned off. That's what got me poking around, looking for something better.

Soundies
Soundie - Jiveroo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soundies were an early version of the music video. From 1940 to 1946, they were displayed on the Panoram, a coin-operated film jukebox, in nightclubs, bars, and restaurants.
Soundies covered all genres of music, from classical to big-band swing, and from hillbilly novelties to patriotic songs. Jimmy Dorsey, Spike Jones, Liberace, Stan Kenton, and Lawrence Welk were a few of the Soundies stars. Approximately 1800 of the three-minute musical films were made, and today Soundies are perhaps best known for the performances of African-American artists who had fewer opportunities to perform in public venues. Louis Jordan, Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong and Stepin Fetchit all made Soundies.
The reference book for Soundies is The Soundies Book (2007) by Scott MacGillivray and Ted Okuda, ISBN 0-595-42060-5 and ISBN 0-595-67969-2.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

I just watched "There's No Business Like Show Business" last night, w/Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe - it's great! Film 4 has been on a serious gaudy musical kick lately, usually involving a femme fatale seducing the staid man away from familial duties. "Carmen Jones", the above, "Moulin Rouge" (the original)... toss in a showing of "Three Coins in the Fountain" and I'm building the most massive gay-friendly film library ever!

Nicholas Brothers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from The Nicholas Brothers)

The Nicholas Brothers were a famous American Tap dance pair of brothers. Fayard (1914–2006) and Harold Nicholas (1921–2000) performed on stage, films, and television. In the 1930s and 40s, when numerous African-American entertainers scenes were cut to accommodate the prevailing racism of the day, the Hollywood studios would demand that no changes be made to any material of the Nicholas Brothers.[citation needed]
Fayard Antonio Nicholas (October 20, 1914 – January 24, 2006), born in Mobile, Alabama, [1], who died from pneumonia, complications of a stroke, was an American dancer, and the elder brother of the tap dancing pair. Fayard married three times - his last wife, Katherine Hopkins (2000 - 24 January 2006) ('til his death), Barbara January (1967 - 1998) ('til her death) with 1 child, and Geraldine Pate (? - 1942) and his [2](divorced) with 2 children, Tony and Paul Nicholas.[3] Fayard was a member of the Bahá'í Faith since 1967.[4] Two of Fayard's granddaughters call themselves the Nicholas Sisters and continue their dances and award winning achievements. [5][6]
Harold Nicholas, (March 27, 1921 – July 3, 2000), born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina,[1] the younger half of the world famous pair, each known as one of the world's greatest dancers. He was first married to actress Dorothy Dandridge from 1942 to 1951, the couple had one child, Harolyn Nicholas, who was born severely mentally handicapped. Ultimately Harold married three times.[3]
