If you like mass-produced books, and who doesn't, honestly, say Happy Birthday. Today is the 552nd anniversary of the start of the print run on the Gutenberg Bible, the first of them all.

DAMNIT! The Ransom Center will be closed by the time I get off work.

Mass-produced books are my sugar daddy. I would totally have a hot dinner on the table and candles burning for the lithographic process.

I am a hopeless addict of mass printed materials. This whole subject is MUCH bigger than I am and I am helpless when in the grip of book lust. Bless you, Johannes Gutenberg, damn your eyes!

I celebrate them forever (but what about Chinese books?).

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the Chinese invented reuseable type, in the sense of carved blocks that each contained an ideograph that could be inked and pressed upon a sheet of paper or cloth, but I'm not sure they invented molded type, the typeframe and the letter press, which really got mass printing underway. IIRC, Gutenberg sweated out these important details, because he had a complete vision about the process.

I'll admit to having a certain difficulty in reading them.

I went to this great exhibit last year(-ish) Ink & Blood: Dead Sea Scrolls to the English Bible, during the Guttenberg press demonstration, as they lowered the press, a 12 year old totally ripped ass.

I made a link! I am a fucking winner!

nickalicious, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

When one person makes a link, we are all winners.

Aimless, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Link sausage?

My mass-produced-books-owned–to–years-of-mass-produced-books-existing ratio is something like 5:2.

Casuistry, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

OH COME NOW. No character codes?!

π. π.

Casuistry, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

That second one was an actual pi typed in.

Is there a way to actually do this? Grumble grumble.

Casuistry, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

Vexatious, isn't it?

Michael White, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Something to request. (You gotta think of this place as still in stress-test mode for a bit.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a centralized place to request things? I've put in a few more urgent ones on the ModReq board but this doesn't seem to be of that category.

Have you read the FAQ yet? (Honest question, not being snarky.) It is here:

Friendly new FAQ

Hopefully that will clear up some of the mysteries, including those regarding updates and upgrades.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

No. I didn't see a thread for a FAQ, nor a link on the bottom of the page where it used to be. And if it was in that 800+ post thread... then no, that is not a thread I am checking, you know?

Casuistry, Saturday, 24 February 2007 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

And that doesn't answer my question, nor does it tell me where to mention that it needs to be added to the to-do list! ;-)
