Dielo, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

babel director seems like a total douchnozzle. kirsten dunst's brother looks kinda retarded.

chaki, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

tr me too, so sad!

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Isla Fisher's breasts are making a concerted effort to upstage Sacha Baron Cohen on the red carpet.

OK, Fearne's gone away. I'm now watching Ryan Seacrest on E!, despite Fearne wittering away to anyone that would listen that Sky One were the only channel showiing red carpet coverage in the UK.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Celine Dion looks simply scrumptious

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

Can I watch red carpet on netwerk tv?

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

i'd dress up if i could see the damn thing. ailsa, where do you live again?

jed_, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

On the ABC red carpet special, Leo looked disappointed that he was nominated for Blood Diamond instead of The Departed.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

i don't have a tv so i'm expecting doubleplusgood play-by-play action on this thread.

get bent, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

all my formals are at my mom's house!

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious looks like David Tennant in that oh-noes-I-was-successful-now-I-have-brain-damage drama that was on BBC1 earlier/yesterday.

Dielo, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure why I'm watching as i don't think I've seen any of the big films nominated (other than sunshine)

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

kate winslett needed more color. she looked so washed out. also better lipstick.

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

damn I missed the obits section which is always my fave. Which clip did they show for A Shelly?

zaxxon25, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

I don't thnk they showed Adrienne Shelley, least I don't remember.

And they did show a second of Godfather II before Spinal Tap for the Bruno Kirby clip.

dan selzer, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

weiss wins for best gown. witherspoon wins for most improved hottiness. hathaway did too much coke.

sunny successor, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

no Adrienne Shelley obit, no Daniele Huillet.

Hollywood votes GORESESE. DiCaprio played Enabler for both of them -- he's devolved into filmdom's Timberlake, the second-rate twerp everyone must show obeisance to.

bring back Jon Stewart

Fuckin' A -- and Ellen was better than I thought she'd be.

The "sorry Tom Hanks" thing referred to a bit Hanks did on acceptance speeches about 5 years ago, cuz these idiots remember shit like that.

I presume Jack either seized the clippers from Britney or Beatty has cast him as Cueball in Dick Tracy 2.

Can anyone explain why when they read Santolallo's name before he won for the Babel score, we heard that spooky (mandolin?) thing he wrote for DEADWOOD 3-4 years ago?? Original!?

even celine was good!
and james taylor spared me from having to listen to randy newman!! thanks james!

YOU'RE INSANE

Best thing was we saw Cagney at least 3 times.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

also -- Helen Mirren: fuck Elizabeth Windsor. Hard.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

I could've swore Prince was one of the best song nominees. I kept waiting for him to perform.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

omg, Melissa E put "an inconvenient truth" IN THE LYRICS

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

and how do you NOT GIVE SACHA B COHEN ANYTHING TO DO ON THE SHOW??

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Also absent from the obits: Perry Henzell and Leonard Schrader, both of whom I admit have thin filmographies, but were important nonetheless. They did finally find room for Don Knotts and Darren McGavin, who both died a couple of weeks before the ceremony last year. Do they have a cut-off date for this?

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I always assumed it was ceremony to ceremony; how long could it take to edit a clip in?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

and how do you NOT GIVE SACHA B COHEN ANYTHING TO DO ON THE SHOW??

Good point.

jaymc, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe they felt havn' those guys in the Borat thongs in the intro was enough, but yeah

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

I thought SBC opted out of participating?!?

David R., Monday, 26 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

My mind is still boggling over that shitty Inconvenient Truth song beating out all three Dreamgirls tunes.

darin, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Exactly. You give SBC nothing to do when SBC decides he wants nothing to do with the Oscarcast.

Eric H., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

I was only happy when Melissa Etheridge won because that was one of the categories I predicted correctly against the grain of common sense (i.e. the worst of the three nommed Dreamgirls songs).

Eric H., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Al Gore should do a buddy comedy movie with Alec Baldwin.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Dude if they could get into a 30 Rock slapfight because Jack did Tipper!!!!!!

David R., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Re: Morricone Was I the only one who felt his montage needed more from the Westerns? I know he hates that that section of his career gets so much ink, but was it too much to ask for a little Once Upon A Time In The West ?

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

the montage was mostly drippy orchestral stuff, and none of the wacked-out crazy shit (obv).

Al Gore's shock take when the orch "cut him off" was very 1948 Columbia two-reeler comedy.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

So, did Forest Whitaker's speech end on a big, brassy note of scientology? Something about his next lifetime?

Eric H., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

drippy and orchestral or not, the soundtrack to The Mission is one of my all-time faves.

kenan, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

So, did Forest Whitaker's speech end on a big, brassy note of scientology? Something about his next lifetime?

I thought that was weird, too. What religion lets you remain an Oscar winner in the next life?

kenan, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Figure skaters love The Mission soundtrack.

Nicole, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

I could listen to James McAvoy's burr all night...

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

In cloven feet.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

i'm watching oprah post-oscar special and must say:

helen mirren is the greatest :) so lovely and inspiring and real
(and she even brought her dress onstage - and showed the inside, which is as beautiful as the outside! amazing (christian lacroix))

rrrobyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

it looks like i missed all the fun on this thread already but i just want to say that damn helen mirren, i am luvvin ur granny cleavage and i dont care if Dan Perry hears me say it.

grady, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

c on oscar winning ts!

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

also: glad ellen pompeo's spine not a factor @ oscars.

grady, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Dave Kehr sez

No argument with Helen Mirren — but why is it suddenly the accepted attitude to treat the Queen of England as a saintly, quietly suffering underdog? But that, too, is the Academy: a bunch of proud liberals right up to the moment they’re allowed to kowtow to the British aristocracy.

So that’s over, and now the industry can get back to making “Ghost Rider II.”

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

My scoresheet:

Acceptance speeches for the major awards = F
Ellen's performance = B
Attempt by the show's director to show the different aspects of certain categories (eg. Screenwritiing, Editing) = A-
Morricone = A+
Opening sequence directed by Errol Morris = B
Effort to make the interpretive dance requirement worthwhile = A
Reality of interpretive dance requirement = C
Over quality of 2006 films which I saw = C

peepee, Monday, 26 February 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

luh - KWAH sweetie darling, luh - KWAH

Hahaha. I was thinking the same thing.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

did I actually just hear Helen Mirren say her dress held her breasts "like two angels' hands"?

jessie monster, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

yes you did.

get bent, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

An inconvenient truth
Is not a truth that’s gonna pass
An inconvenient truth
Will tell your friends ‘bout greenhouse gas
When you’re tryin’ to find the proof
And telling Peter, Paul, and Ruth
You can look
To an inconvenient truth

An inconvenient truth
Is not convenient to impart
An inconvenient truth
Won’t make your face into a heart
But when the Dentist on the roof
Can’t save the world’s impacted tooth
You can look
To an inconvenient truth

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

how stoned was phillip seymour hoffman? squinty mcgrins.

I kept wanting to knock that thing off nicole kidman's shoulder.

Edward III, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

and I don't mean keith urban

Edward III, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

are Arkin and Mike Nichols the only ppl with roots in Chicago improv to win Oscars?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

I think so. Barbara Harris was nomintated for ...Harry Kellerman... but didn't win. Nia Vardalos didn't win the writing award for My Big Fat Greek Wedding either. Alan Alda was Second City as well, but IIRC, he was just part of a New York stageshow they did.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Elaine May and Bill Murray were both nominated as well (but didn't win).

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still kicking myself for missing the question at bar trivia last week: "Who was the first SNL alum to be nominated for an Oscar?" Aykroyd's name came to mind, but I didn't think he had actually been nominated for Driving Miss Daisy. Turns out he had, and so Bill Murray was wrong.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

The best presentation of all was the wacked-out Elliot Gould and Sally Kellerman at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Checking the wiki: Melinda Dillion didn't win for Close Encounters or Absence of Malice either.

For some reason I keep thinking Bill Murray was one of the Toronto guys, which of course he wasn't.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

I totally missed ISAs. was Sarah Silverman OUTRAGEOUS?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)
