So, how healthy are you?

Ever felt like you deserve time off work, but actually don't feel in anyway a bit 'under t' weather'?

When did you get to have time off work for being a bit dicky?

Majorly back in the day (1987 or so), I had a really bad time healthwise, and spent about 6 months of the year absent. But thesedays, don't even catch colds bad enough.

Still, mustn't grumble.

Mark G, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm off with my third really bad cold in as many weeks. I feel run down and terrible, and a bit achey all over. Just before Christmas I was off for about a fortnight with a viral infection. I think I'm just getting old - the slightest thing is knocking me for six right now.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

aww take care, Ailsa!

Dr.C, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

One time, I'd just come back from holiday abroad, driving home from Newcastle but the car broke down. Ended up getting home very early Monday morning, felt very sleepy (obv), so called in sickwise, boss understanding etc... Was planning to get 2 hours and be up and go in. Then I find actually I can't get up and was in bed for a week w/ food poisoning or something.

About 3 months later, got a throat infection which wasn't painful if I didn't speak. Was also off for a week, feeling completely bogus.

Mark G, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

.. because you can't leave the house if you're officially off work. And there's only so much TV you can be arsed enough to watch!

Mark G, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks Dr C! I am being extra-cautious as going on holiday at the weekend and do not want it ruined by being poorly, though I suspect being on holiday for a fortnight = just what the doctor would order.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

There was a bug going round the office, but as I was out & about for most of the past 2 weeks, avoided it.

Which is just as well, as it's birthday week next week.

Mark G, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

x-post I'd take the week off Ailsa, just to be on the safe side.

Dr.C, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

i've had a sore throat for a week. what do i do? I've been taking antibiotics for sickness i got before that, but the sore throat seems to have shown up independently and has stuck around while the other symptoms disappeared.

deej, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think gargling with soluble aspirin is supposed to help sort out a sore throat.

C J, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

haha....I've been sick for the last 20 months or so...and yet am probably "healthier" than ever in that I've lost weight in that time by eating no wheat/dairy and seldom drinking any booze, plus exercising more.

don't know that it's really worth it though!

Ronan, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

My mind and body haven't been healthier for a long time. Since new year I've walked (fast) for 25 minutes every day and done yoga and pilates once a week each because my resolution was to increase the exercise I do (before it was virtually nothing). This alone has meant I've lost 9lbs without changing my diet. I haven't had a cold since last Easter, and my recent wheat-free/oat-free stint has convinced me I ought to do it permanently because I felt so much better. I feel like an arsehole posting this right after Ronan, poor chap.

Madchen, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Oh it's ok...I don't want people to feel bad!

Ronan, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm definitely mentaly healthier in the past couple of months than I've been in a very long time. Most of my work sick days are due to mentally being low so this is good.

I walk a couple of miles a day but so far have not seen any weight loss. damn getting older and metabolism slower. I try to eat better and am also trying to cut back on drinking so hopefully that will help.

bottom line, I'm not too bad but could be better.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

a few days ago i did the "realage" test and it told me i'm 28.2 (i'm 30.2).

get bent, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

is that online?

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

yep... i'm sure if you google "realage" it'll come up.

get bent, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not healthy at all. I'm fat, partly as a result of exciting thyroid issues (partly just cause I'm fat), which makes me tired and depressed much of the time. And I've got a cough which I've had for almost three months now, despite steroid inhalers and antibiotics and all the rest.

Oh, and I suffered a partially prolapsed disc about three years ago from which I have never recovered.

In other words, I am a crock.

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'm fairly healthy. I probably need to eat more.

jel --, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

I won't take any test that wants my email. I guess that makes me old and grumpy.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

you don't have to give them your real e-mail.

get bent, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

I did that test and it still hasn't sent my results!

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait here they are.

boo.
current age: 33.2
real age: 37.1

well ain't that 'bout a bitch.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

That place never gave me AGE at all. I will punch them! I'll tell you, though, I'm 23 (now but will I live to be 24 the way things are going I don't know). And I look max of 19. So my real age is pseudo-freshman applecheeks I guess?

Abbott, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

the real age thing was fun, but i don't agree with some of the things for which i was docked healthy points. sleep, for instance - i try to get 8-9 hours a night, and according to the site that's unhealthy. also, i didn't know off the top of my head the exact breakdown of my multivitamin so i was penalized for incomplete nutrition.

i think my exercise schedule is pretty decent (3x week cardio and 1 90 minute yoga class per week in addition to A LOT of walking), but i have friends who have crazy regimes (spinning 3-4x a week plus 3 90 min bikram yoga classes, for example) so i end up feeling like a slacker.

lauren, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'm often mistaken for a college student so I don't think I actually look 37. I probably should've lied about that brief period as a smoker.

Right now I'm eating a three pack of reeses. yum.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Dude 8-9 hours is perfectly healthy AND essential for (my) mental & physical health...leaves unstressed and refreshed! I heart you circadian rhythms. I hat you RealAge.

Abbott, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

I am NOT going to tell those people all my shit.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

My real age was 20.6 a few years ago, now it's 28.7.

jel --, Monday, 26 February 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

they really have no way to tie it to you beth, esp if you use a fake email.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

when it says "issues which interest you and your family", wtf do they mean by "interest"? i'm interested in all sorts of shit, doesn't mean i've got it.

emsk, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

i'm getting much healthier.. i've cut my drinking more than half this year compared to the last few years. riding to and from work every day is noticeably improving my fitness level (and hopefully soon will melt away my fatty fat fat).. which also encourages me to drink heaps more water. plus my gf is a vegetarian so i've been eating much more veg over the last few months..

considering what my health was like three-ish years ago (heavy drinker, heavy smoker, pure meat & chocolate diet, very depressed) it's a big step in the right direction..

electricsound, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

so apparently my "realage" is 26.3 and my actual age is 28.5. woop.

emsk, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

so apparently my "realage" is 26.3 and my actual age is 28.5. woop.

oops no, it's 28.6. diff of -2.3. woop.

emsk, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

I am 33.7 and realage out at 30.1. Whatever.

luna, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

i'm incredibly unhealthy. since having a kid eight months ago i've had time to go to the gym exactly twice. I eat like crap because there's no time and I'm tired all the time. hence, I got a cold a week and a half ago and still have it; and picked up the norovirus that the baby contracted (probably from the nasty babies r us changing room we had to use last weekend) and spent four days vomiting and crapping my guts out WITH a cold, and now I'm back to just coughing and feeling like I'm going to die all the time.

akm, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

My real age is 39.7, which is funny considering my doctor always talks to me like I'm going to die tomorrow if I don't get my shit together.

akm, I feel for you. Being sick for a long time is just rubbish, and having to take care of a small baby at the same time would be a lot.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 08:41 (eighteen years ago)

Argh to the bugs children contract. Bad luck, my wife's a reception-age teacher, and is perpetually coming down with something, weirdly, I never seem to catch whatever it is (which annoys her no end). For myself I can guarantee that I'll be bedridden and sick as a dog for about two days in january each year, I think it's something to do with relaxing after the christmas rush. Happens every year without fail. Apart from that I'm never ill at all.
