Is there anyone who does this better than Robert Crumb?

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

The condition?

Michael White, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

"a mode of being or form of existence of a person or thing"

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

OK. Still sounds odd, though, since it's not an essential quality of a person.

Michael White, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Greene? Waugh? Mauriac? Bernanos? Bloy? Chesterton?

Michael White, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Flannery O'Connor is all about being a Southern Catholic, which I think is part of why I always felt like there was some element I was *missing* in her stories as much as I loved them.

GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS, upon whom I am currently attempting to write a dissertation...

unfished business, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

J.F. Powers and Abel Ferrera.

Eazy, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Ronan on that "What Are You Giving Up for Lent?" thread.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Greene's 'The Power And The Glory' is pretty sensational stuff.

For an 'anti' perspective, try Charles Maturin's 'Melmoth The Wanderer', which nails all the Inquisition shit g'wan down in 18th/19th century Europe.

unfished business, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Anthony Burgess? David Lodge? James Joyce? Luis Buñuel?

Hitchcock, F Coppola, Scorsese

Dr Morbius, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

Buñuel and Joyce.

I expect that being "the condition of being a Catholic" would be different, depending on which country one lives in (for example, El Salvador as opposed to Ireland or Poland), so that each artist, writer or director would depict the Catholicism most familiar to them, rather than some overarching and universal catholicism.

Aimless, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Right, but Greene's a convert. I think there are definite differences in being raised Catholic and converting to Catholicism.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

rather than some overarching and [s]universal[/s] catholic Catholicism.

Michael White, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

What would you say is some good Greene on Catholicism? I mean, the first thing that pops into my head is Pinky's marriage in Brighton Rock, which is a bit ... a bit much to consider in "best depictions of the condition of being a Catholic."

nabisco, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Can't believe I forgot Hitchcock.

Gilbert Sorrentino.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not Catholic and can't speak to this, but it must be thrown into the ring to incite grumbling: Craig Finn of The Hold Steady, for their 'Condition of Being Catholic' concept album?

Ben Boyerrr, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, Monsiuer White, the catholic (read: universal) nature of the Catholic Church is more of a claim than a factual condition. The Copts have much to say on this head, but no one listens.

Aimless, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Orson Welles' remarks on Buñuel quite OTM: "I consider him the most supremely religious directior in all cinema...he hates God as only a Catholic can."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Scorsese's the first one I thought of. Who's That Knocking At My Door and Mean Streets especially.

You don't make up for your sins in church. You do it in the streets.

Edward III, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I agree - and in that light "Thge Milky Way" is my favorite Catholic movie.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

Err..."The Milky Way".

Capitaine Jay Vee, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

Jack Chick.

Sock Puppet, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

are you kidding? if it was up to jack chick we'd be stuffing catholics in ovens.

Edward III, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

I thought it was an obvious joke.

Sock Puppet, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

My bad.

Sock Puppet, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

you ARE kidding!

Edward III, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

The Copts have much to say on this head, but no one listens.

Not to mention every Protestant sect, all the Orthodox Churches, and even Mormons.

Michael White, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

jh0shea, Friday, 2 March 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Abel Ferrara, Annabel Chong, etc.

Pye Poudre, Friday, 2 March 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Aimless OTM on geography.

Among filmmakers, I'll mention the Robert(o)s, Bresson and Rossellini, who find transcendence quite attainable in Catholicism, however loosely (ie, they have more of the mystic than the Pope).

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

are you kidding? if it was up to jack chick we'd be stuffing catholics in ovens.

Edward III on Friday, 2 March 2007 21:30 (Yesterday)

oh no no no he "looooves" catholics! he just wants to "save" them

latebloomer, Saturday, 3 March 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

latebloomer, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Chris Matthews

gershy, Sunday, 4 March 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to add Fellini to this, altough his point of veiw was decidedly that of a lapsed Catholic.
