Can anything top Zodiac? [admin: this is actually someone pretending to be morbs, not the real thing]

Dr Morbius., Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

Shooter, starring Marky Mark Wahlberg and the girl with the odd looking face

milo z, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to see Ghost Rider the day after tomorrow, I will let you know if that is the best film of 2007.

chap, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

finally, someone on ILX to let me know if ghost rider is any good.

g®▲Ðұ, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be very surprised if I see an American film better than Zodiac.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

morbs u forgot norbit

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Morbs, have you been reading Entertainment Weekly?

(Nonetheless, Zodiac will likely score high on my list)

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

what if david lynch has another bowel movement?

remy bean, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

Out of the 32 movies I've seen that have been released in 2007 US releases, I have Zodiac ranked 6th. The only two non-docs I have ahead of it are Alphadog and Catch and Release. But, on my five star scale I've given them all three stars so they're sort of equivalent.

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

or, "Of the thrity-two 2007 US releases I've seen,..."

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

how on earth have you seen THIRTY-TWO 2007 releases???!!!

unfished business, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

Well, last summer my girlfriend decided she wanted to try to see every movie that was released in 2007. I tried to talk her out of it, but she seemed to think we could do it. So I agreed. Neither of us realized how many fucking movies get released. We are trying to see every movie originally domestically released in 2007 that plays in the Los Angeles area. So far we've seen 32 out of 54 that we have determined are eligible. Its been difficult at times. There is lots of sneaking. We are going to have to Netflix a great many of them, and I don't think the project will be done until well into next year. I think we're going to have to set the 2008 Oscars as our deadline. So far I have seen six movies that meet my criteria of "Future-self would recommend to Past-self". These have been Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?, God Grew Tired of Us,An Unreasonable Man,Alpha Dog,Catch and Release, and Zodiac.

The bottom three for me are Funny Money, Verdict on Auschwitz: The Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial 1963-1965, and [i]Constellation
. Yes, even [i]Code Name: The Cleaner
was better than these movies.

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm...The best films I've seen this year are documentaries...Manda Bala (Send a Bullet) and Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa are probably the two standouts (though I'm inevitably forgetting something).

Tape Store, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

Colossal Youth is the only really great thing I've seen so far (haven't caught Zodiac yet), but who knows which un-U.S.-distributed festival films belong in which year?

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:35 (eighteen years ago)

Still want to see The Dead Girl.

Eazy, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 07:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure Zodiac is great but if I never see another serial killer movie it will be too soon.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

I want the jokes - so apart from the aforementioned Norbit (which of course looks hi-larious) - what is the best [b]comedy/b] film for 2007?

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

See - I tried to highlight comedy - what went wrong? Oh I see...

I have greatly enjoyed Hot Fuzz and Science of Sleep (which I suppose is probably 2006?) so far.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 09:01 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit brontosaur! You should be charting that experience somewhere! Or do you not have time for that, what with all the movie watching?

G00blar, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

That is not morbs, and I am going to smash his head against a wall if he ever shows up at a NY FAP.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Well, G00blar, I started out trying to write little journal entries for each week (which I might go back to) but with the full time job and all the movie watching coupled with the fact that writing is like pulling teeth for me, I haven't really managed it yet. I need to at least try to write little capsule reviews for myself just so I can keep track of what I thought about things. After Avenue Montaigne last night I have now seen 33! It was charming enough, a little too neat and tidy, but quite good anyways.

x-post

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that'd totally be worthwhile, if only for yourself! 1)I imagine it's a really interesting, unique period of time: just movie after movie after movie all the time. 2)You might start to forget which movie is which!

G00blar, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

wait wait wait nobody is saying anything about the fact that bronotosaur's top movie in 2007 was CATCH AND RELEASE!?!?!?!

homosexual II, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

that's why they call it "January and February"

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

i didnt see norbit, but it has to be 100x better than catch and release

homosexual II, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

best movie of 2007 is national treasure 2

homosexual II, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres and Synecdoche, New York.

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Still want to see The Dead Girl.

Yeah, I kind of want to see that, too. Is it still playing here, EZ? (Although technically it's a 2006 release, it just didn't make it to Chicago until this year.)

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, it was showing in Evanston for only a week or two, and now it's gone. The same writer/director's earlier movie Blue Car is really good.

Eazy, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

That is not morbs, and I am going to smash his head against a wall if he ever shows up at a NY FAP.

cant we all plz just agree to treat all morbses equally? i mean dont be so racist, jeez.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha whose face do you think you're talking about?

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, Catch and Release is my 5th ranked movie. I have rated it: "Great rental", or 3-stars. I just happen to think its better than Zodiac,(3 stars), which mostly boils down to a genre preference . My top movie is Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?(4 stars, "Go see in Theater"), and my favorite non-doc is Alpha Dog(3 stars).

I am worried that Tape Store and C0LIn B are listing movies I haven't heard of. I would be sad that I would miss anything good while still having to watch all the really bad movies out there.

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

have u seen black snake moan yet - i think maybe i go tonite!

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

btw u mad - but in an admirable way.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think what I'm doing is admirable, just kind of dumb, but epic dumb. Movie watching isn't such a bad way to spend about two hours a day, but having to go out of my way to see lots of movies that I know are most likely going to awful isn't great. I'd be better off just making myself hit up the revival theaters in town every night.

Black Snake Moan I rated 2 stars (Watch some Saturday afternoon on cable), but I think I was being unneccesarily critical, because its really quite good, it just wasn't as raw as I expected. Its too damn heartwarming.

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

same raw/warming ratio as hustle and flow? cause that was pretty good for me

also i think this should be the brontosaur documents his epic dumb 2007 movie quest thread - so keep us posted

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say the raw stuff is a bit more raw, and the warm stuff is definitely warmer, but its not mixed together in as cohesive a whole as Hustle and Flow; its a bit more oil/vinegar. But if you have an interest in the filmmaker already, I think you should definitely go see it.

I don't want to hijack this thread anymore than I have already, but if I watch something that I think is great and might appeal to someone, I'll drop in and say so.

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

TMNT is gong to be pretty spectacular.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also going.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

oh man i will see TMNT so many times

ghost rider, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Brontosaur, I saw both of those docs at the True/False Film Fest this weekend...I imagine that they'll be released later this year.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

oh good. I hope they get distribution, thanks for the head's up.

brontosaur, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Wait. All you guys are talking about some new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie?

G00blar, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Things to do this summer:

Buy MLB.tv
Surf
Smoke w33d and go to TMNT movie as much as possible.

g®▲Ðұ, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

oh fuck, it come out in two weeks! make that "things to do this spring"

one month passes...
Serious wtf why has nobody mention Marie Antoinette which is clearly the best film EVER. This is quite baffling.

I know, right?, Sunday, 29 April 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Cuz it was released last fall? (I liked it).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 29 April 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

I just saw Planet B-boy and hereby nominate it. Holy shit is that even POSSIBLE?? Plus I want to feed the entire dark-horse Korean team chicken soup for days.

Laurel, Sunday, 29 April 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I got a little confused. The only films I've seen this year (!) are Inland Empire (gave me nightmares) and Breaking and Entering (so boring I nearly died twice and Jude Law should have just quit after I Heart Huckabees) and I saw Little Miss Sunshine which is still in cinemas here and also the Philadelphia Story in the cinema here also which is so so great and I love that movie anyway so that's probably like my pick of this year if it counts which it doesn't. My it was yar.

I know, right?, Sunday, 29 April 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Did you know that Laurence Fishburne was in Apocalypse Now?

cli0019, Monday, 30 April 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

so far, The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Passio

Dr Morbius, Monday, 30 April 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

(9/11:) The Falling Man was technically released last year, but I saw it at a doc festival this year...It made me cry, sent chills down my spine, etc. at different points. If you don't mind watching a whole film on youtube, then enjoy, if that's the right word.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

This Is England. Fuck the haters.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

going to see PAPRIKA tonight!

poortheatre, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

http://slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/zoobig.jpg

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

BOOOOOOOO. Granted I was really tired when I saw it, but I don't think I learned anything from Zoo. It looked great, but it felt like the information didn't justify the length.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Inland Empire, closely followed by Zodiac but honestly I haven't seen that many new movies this year

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, the film sort of goes out of its way to emphasize certain kinds of information (spoken language, 'explanatory' documentary photography, landscapes, re-enactments) and ignoring others (human faces, pornographic film, objective chronology). It's fair to say that you wished Devor had gone about things differently, but I'm not really sure WHY you would; the Enumclaw horse incident isn't really ripe for Ken Burns treatment.

Also, the length=70 minutes!

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

X-post, and "ignoring" should be "ignore".

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

That Sarah Polley adaptation of the Alice Munro story's gotten great reviews.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

"Away From Her" is completely horrible: utterly leaden, badly acted, bad script, looks awful. Polley has no feeling for the story at all. some moments are downright embarrassing. 1/5 at a push.

jed_, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

and i mean, yeah, my mind is completely boggled by the reviews.

jed_, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Away From Her" is completely horrible: utterly leaden, badly acted, bad script, looks awful. Polley has no feeling for the story at all. some moments are downright embarrassing. 1/5 at a push

Hm. A pity. The story on which it's based is one of Munro's best.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Uh...yeah, it should have been a 20 minute short.

I don't like to walk out of a documentary feeling like I learned nothing...nothing about the subjects, nothing about myself, nothing about anything. Maybe I missed something because I was verrrry sleepy when I watched it (and it didn't help that it slow-paced...and that it played with a brilliant, entertaining short).

That's not to say that I don't appreciate beautiful photography; it's just that I've seen other documentaries do a much better job of it.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

And Inland Empire is easily the best fiction film I've seen.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

alred, yes i love Munro but haven't read that story. fwiw, my patrtner who's a huge Munro fan too also really disliked it.

jed_, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ typos

jed_, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)

Inland Empire isn't 07, but distrib of anything but franchise garbage takes years these days, rendering "this year" lists mostly arbitrary.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Once", this kinda "musical" movie is quite good and moving i think.
the gimmick worked for me.

Zeno, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

though it's not 2007 best..i can't recall anything "best" in 2007 so far

Zeno, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

I haven't been to the movies in quite a while...Any other additions?

Tape Store, Monday, 2 July 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

Away from Her is a contender, disregard jed.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 2 July 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

still brodiac

s1ocki, Monday, 2 July 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

better than Zodiac, so far:

The Wind That Shakes the Barley
*Passio
Away from Her
Offside
12:08 East of Bucharest
Bamako
Brand Upon the Brain!
*The Unforeseen
*Euphoria
*Glue
I Don't Want to Sleep Alone
Manufactured Landscapes

*not commercially released as yet

Dr Morbius, Monday, 2 July 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, have you seen In Between Days? just opened in NY.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 2 July 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Not a one of those has opened down here. I've had to place Away From Her and ...Barley on my Netflix queue just in case.

Morbs, I'd love to read your take on Knocked Up.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I might get to that, but writing about film has cut into my filmgoing time.

KU is over 2 hrs long? Misgivings already...

Dr Morbius, Monday, 2 July 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)
