How long does it take for penalty points on your license to get expunged?

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

Depends on the offence.

If I have a licence to drive, can it also be used as a licence to kill?

Pete, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Answers here

Endorsements must remain on a licence for 11 years from date of conviction if the offence is:

* drinking/drugs and driving (shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80)
* causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs (shown on the licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60)
* causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis (shown on the licence as CD70)

Endorsements must remain on a licence for four years from date of conviction if the offence is:

* reckless/dangerous driving (shown on the licence as DD40, DD60 and DD80)
* offences resulting in disqualification
* disqualified from holding a full licence until a driving test has been passed

Endorsements must remain on a licence for four years from the date of offence in all other cases.

what's the point of the middle section?

Difference between offence date (applying to minor offences such as speeding) and conviction date (for ones that require a judgment), I guess.

Alba, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

This probably means my speeding endorsement can go now.

Ed, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

is speeding a criminal offence that needs to go on job applications?

ken c, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

no, unless they require a 'clean driving licence'

Ed, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

ah thanks, everyone. So the answer is four years for "speeding", which in my case meant driving on an A- road through a small village at four in the morning at under 40 mph.

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

i got done recently by going 70mph on M11 (it had one lane closed for construction but it was 11pm and i was the only car, and "u can't touch this" was on the stereo)

ken c, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone know if it affects your insurance much?

ken c, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Caught by the Rick James Police!!!

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

The police 'hammered' you, then, Ken.

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

it's a good thing i wasn't 'hammered'!

ken c, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Insurance normally only starts going up after 6 points, I think...

Most insurers disregard a single speeding conviction, unless it was >30mph above the limit (in which case I think you'd be in court anyway as I think that's the upper limit for fixed penalties).

Pity the song wasn't 'who's gonna drive you home tonight' as the police picked you up
