T/S: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis vs. Floccinaucinihilipilification

I always knew Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis was the longest word in the English language, and I always knew that some people don't think it should count because its a medical term and not really part of normal language use. But what I didnt know was that the word's creation has some scandal associated with it:

The more serious problem is that the word was coined to serve as the longest word. Word Ways: The Journal of Recreational Linguistics, revealed in several articles that the word was invented in 1935 by Everett M. Smith, president of the National Puzzlers' League, at its annual meeting. The word figured in a newspaper headline about the meeting, after which it was picked up by an author of puzzle books. Members of the National Puzzlers' League then campaigned to have it included in major dictionaries, eventually succeeding with the Oxford English Dictionary and Webster's Second.

So the longest word that wasn't created just to be a long word and isn't a medical term is Floccinaucinihilipilification, meaning:

the act or habit of estimating or describing something as worthless, or making something to be worthless by deprecation.

I've been a fan of Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis for some time now. It has to do with disease, lungs, and volcanoes- all pretty rad things. But now that I know the facts, I think I'm kind of leaning more towards Floccinaucinihilipilification. Deeming something worthless by using a word that long is pretty pwnsome.

What do you think?

I didn't know that pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis was that old! I first learned it from a Chicago Tribune article in 1988.

And the Bible says that the universe is 6000 years old! Or something!

Floccinaucinihilipilification sounds better.

I was always a fan of antidistestablishmentarianism, even though in the length stakes it's clearly an also-ran.

Glah NO! I had to hear antidisefluhguh repeated on end by my peers in Mathcounts. Srsly, I wish even that they sang "Harvey the Wonder Hamster" even more than they already did to replace the long-word wackiness.

Doesn't count unless These guys have done a sampler called it. So far:

So far:

- Honorificabilitudinitatibus (or- with honour)
- Floccinaucinihilipilification (or- the habit to deem things as worthless)
- Sesquipedalian (or- the overuse of long words)
HA[i]
- Aichmorhabdophobia
- Gynotikolobomassophilia

Pls tell me you typed that out all from memory.

Actually i like the idea that: The word figured in a newspaper headline about the meeting, after which it was picked up by an author of puzzle books. Members of the National Puzzlers' League then campaigned to have it included in major dictionaries, eventually succeeding with the Oxford English Dictionary and Webster's Second.

Come on people, we can get HEN FAP into a dictionary! Lets do it.

The longest word in Finnish that isn't a compound word or a technical term is kumarreksituteskenteleentuvaisehkollaismaisekkuudellisenneskenteluttelemattomammuuksissansakkaankopahan. However, the word is practically indecipherable, since it's formed by putting all possible case endings behind a base word. But technically it's correct Finnish.

The longest compound word that has actually been in use is lentokonesuihkuturbiinimoottoriapumekaanikkoaliupseerioppilas ("airplane jet turbine engine assistant mechanic NCO student"), a military term.

The longest ever word is the one that featured in "Gypsy Woman (she's homeless)" and it is "LaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaaLaadaadeeelaadoodaa"

tku.
