I was thinking the other day, what is good about Britain today, that wasn't in the past? I was going to start a new thread, then found this one.
I can't remember what I thought was good, that made me think about this. Maybe it was something about old things being brought back, like cinemas, fish & chip shops and whatnot. But a lot of them are brought back in much more expensive form.

How about THE VINYL REVIVAL? http://www.hodder.co.uk/book_details.asp?book=105912
Hm ... maybe the fact that environmental considerations have become bureaucratically embedded in public policy so that eg planning decisions, refuse disposal etc are always liable to be framed in those terms. But maybe this is an over-optimistic view of a reality which is actually more cynical and negative.

Most peoples living standards are better now than in the past? Housing (as in the quality of the housing), the health service (despite everything...and I guess depending on when you back to?, dentistry (not talking about costs here, just the mechanics of it), washing machines, no small pox, better sanitation, list pretty much goes on and on...how far are we going back?
I don't want to sound like a broken record but I would rather live now than at an other time on history.

As for the things you mentioned. Well, fish and chips are variable in quality all over the place and f&c's in my local is £3.60 which is not overly expensive is it? As for cinemas, were they better in the past? I doubt it but I suppose it depends on what you mean by better. Probably cheaper.

London was a run-down provincial place 20 years ago. It is much better now in every respect, excepting affordability.

All the old cinemas look nicer. Nobody builds art deco style now.

"Nice looking cinemas" should probably be a thread

I like the new one in Leicester, but if you like art deco cinemas look away now... > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2408/2075945998_9c1157d43a_m.jpg

art deco style --albeit a chintzier, strip-mall version of it-- is big around here for new cinemas

How about the fact that Sir Trevor Brooking is Director of Football Development at the FA, and thus constantly, though politely, badgering people about how kids, you see, have to learn better tech*nique*, from a young age, because we're falling be*hind* all the time and at this *rate* we won't have home-grown players for future World Cups?
I find that a nice thing about the present UK.

Manhattan now free of pesky artists, bohemians, subcultures
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)
but we don't know if he's really having any success yet. if he is, that might be a good thing about the 10s.
i like that building, Ned
