Rolling Your Own

DO any of you roll your own cigarettes? I have started to, it is the cheap and Bali Shag has yum aplenty moreso than any other tobacco I've tried. Only drawback is it sometimes feels like an affectation: 'O Gatsby!'

it's too dark to put the keys in my ignition.

Err I went off about this a few weeks ago but haven't bought roller/papers/baccy yet! Just not very organized, frankly, but maybe this weekend.

I hand-rolled my own cigarettes for about five years. That was a long time ago, though. I had mad skills at it. If I still smoked today I would probably still roll my own. I favored Drum tobacco. It was a superior smoke to the crap they put in U.S.A. manufactured cigs.

I like the l'il zigzag 70 mm roller. I am such a geek, I cut up a Marlboros 71 pack to make a template for custom smoke boxes.

They don't make Drum anymore. :( Bali Shag is from Denmarx tho.

I like 'em with filters, which raises a whole new set of "I'm not double-jointed" problems.

As for the 'it's an affectation' worry, when I was asked about my rolling up, I tended to tell people I did it to save money. Then they pitied me as a poor person who couldn't afford a proper pack of cigarettes. This pretty well ended the problem of them viewing it as an affectation, since poverty is regarded as uncool and completely without status value.

It's very common here (the UK). I think cigarettes are even pricier than they are in the States, and you can buy packs of filters for them and everything. I fully commited to rollies, normal cigs seem weirdly large and too chemically now.

The chemicals are what really put me off normal cigs, aye. Once you get used to rollies, 'real' fags taste like fakes. Agree on the tricksiness of rolling with a filter though, especially when standing up outdoors in any kind of breeze.

Why not get a cheap-o rolling machine, roll up a bunch of filtereds ahead of time and carry them in a nice cigarette case?

milo z, Saturday, 10 March 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

That's the general idea, yes. I just don't have my shit together yet.

You get skilled at rolling with filters pretty quick. I can roll while walking in a stiff wind now. It's also a satisfying little prelude to a smoke.

My grandpa used to roll his own...with one hand. It was impressive for 6-years-old me to watch.

libcrypt, Saturday, 10 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I know a bloke with one arm who rolls his own. He also beat me at pool once.

my dad used to cause he was poor. i think he had a little *machine*. my husband also does from time to time. esp now since the prices have gone up again.
