A thread about the recent firing of 8 US attorneys

Gonzales backtracks, NYT calls for him to be fired, Rove involved in the New Mexico case.. So, what happens next?

My question is.. so, what were the attorneys who weren't fired up to? I see Krugman asked this question Friday.. Daily Kos has a diary up that helpfully quotes more of the Krugman piece..

Odd there hasn't been more about this, but maybe it was on another thread.

So anyway, a slew of new documents are up at the Judiciary Committee site, various summations are already circulating at the NY Times and elsewhere, Talking Points would happily appreciate your assistance and so forth.

Most telling right now, though, is that Patterico, who has been the go-to guy for the right saying "It's nothing much!" is starting to despair. And how:

I’m starting to feel like a volleyball player who makes amazing saves, time and time again — only to have the ball spiked back into his face . . . time and time again. And to make matters worse, he learns that the player who is setting up the spikes is supposed to be his own teammate.

So consider this my open letter to the Bush Administration:

Guys:

I think the press has distorted some of the aspects of this case against you. And, for that reason, at least, I want to defend you.

But you’re making it really, really hard for me to defend you.

And I’m not your defense attorney. If I think you’re full of crap, I don’t have to defend you.

And, given that 1) at least one of you gleefully boasted that you planned to deceive Congress, and 2) I keep making arguments that get shoved back in my face based on your own actions — I’m kind of tempted to tell you to screw yourselves.

Love and kisses,

Patterico

I guess you gotta learn at some point.

yay for authoritarian followers and water carriers

kingfish, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

so do we have a verdict yet on whether 'Gonzales is gone within a few days' = buying a few news cycles to try to make the story go away?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

funny how they gave it to CBS again

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Bush will "stand firm," etc.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

Well well well:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in a November meeting, according to documents released Friday that contradict earlier claims that he was not closely involved in the dismissals.

The Nov. 27 meeting, in which the attorney general and at least five top Justice Department officials participated, focused on a five-step plan for carrying out the firings of the prosecutors, Justice Department officials said late Friday.

There, Gonzales signed off on the plan, which was crafted by his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson. Sampson resigned last week amid a political firestorm surrounding the firings.

I like how they figured out 'oh right, release stuff late on Friday instead' a little too late here.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 March 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

i feel very very pleased by all this

modestmickey, Saturday, 24 March 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

I am surprised at how little attention/outrage this is creating. Maybe the recent neverending series of Bush Administration scandals is actually burning people out? ugh.

Z S, Saturday, 24 March 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking that it was making a bit of a scandal, and I was happy that finally, after all the scandals, it is making a difference (at least, as press coverage goes). Then again, I might just be getting a skewed version of how it is being reported. Much ado was made about it on Meet the Press last week.

Gukbe, Saturday, 24 March 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

nope, that didn't work.

Gukbe, Saturday, 24 March 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

One of your links worked.

"That being said, all Mr. Bush has to do is to tell Tony Snow to explain the reasons why all eight prosecutors were replaced. Snow could do that in his sleep. Just go, boom, boom, boom, have a nice weekend. But because the Bush administration is so reluctant to explain anything, the media is running wild."

I thought it had been established pretty clearly that 7 of the 8 prosecutors had excellent track records?

Z S, Saturday, 24 March 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

I love how O'Reilly, despite believing that he's totally decimated the record of three of them, only admonishes the 'far left' media and never the Bush administration. No reasoning is given for Bush or Snow's reluctance to comment on why they were fired. How is this guy so popular?

He used to host Inside Edition, for christ's sake.

Z S, Saturday, 24 March 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I wasn't saying I was surprised by O'Reilly. I never really am anymore.

Still, I know he's popular. Is there a decent amount of the press who thinks the way he does about this particular issue?

Gukbe, Saturday, 24 March 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

hey guys, remember "gone by Friday"?

gabbneb, Saturday, 24 March 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Nobody said which Friday. Maybe.

Anyway, you can review the document dump here if you are so inclined. The TPM review thread is here.

two weeks pass...
CNN Breaking:

The House Judiciary Committee has served a subpoena to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales seeking documents related to the firings of U.S. attorneys.

Not really shock news but still.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...
So much has gone down the pike. Anyway, the latest:

Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty announced his resignation today, saying he is leaving the Justice Department later this summer to enter the private sector, officials said.

McNulty announced his plans to leave in a letter to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, citing the financial pressures of having children entering their college years, one official said.

Uh-huh.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

It's Monica Goodling Day! I'm so excited...

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Right. If the Deputy Attorney General of the United States of America can't afford to put his kids through college, then our country's even more fucked.

Pleading the Fifth seems to be a popular approach.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yow, a bit of shit is hitting the fan right now. Goodling was asked when she first became aware that Gonzalez' public statements and/or testimony had inaccuracies, and her lawyers wigged out. A Repub committee member tried to derail the questioning, and they're having some vote right now to see whether the questioning can proceed.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Everything leading up to lunch recess has just been to lull Goodling into a false sense of security, apparently. They're getting FUSSY with her now.

Brief recess for floor votes and then round 2.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

McNulty's already hit back at Goodling. Funtime.
