Why is the BBC's coverage of Crufts so amateurish?

This is the second year in a row I've watched most of it, and they don't seem to be able to do anything right. Is it where they put all the trainees so they can cut their outside broadcasting teeth or something? Last night they even managed to make a mess of showing the results of a competition by cutting to the interview with the winner before showing the results. Brilliant. Well done lads.

Yeah, but: DOGS!

G00blar, Monday, 12 March 2007 09:38 (eighteen years ago)

That's no way to talk about Peter Purves.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 12 March 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

But Peter Purves is hardly on it! He's been sidelined in favour of gormless eejit Ben Fogle, who I've nothing against, but expecting him to anchor eight hours of BBC programming is a bit much, and he is simply not up to it.

Sometimes when I see Peter Purves on Crufts, he seems like he wants to get a pack of rottweilers and have them savage everyone in the room. Although of course that would be using dogs for evil, which is against the Blue Peter Code.

Good old licence payer-funded ageism on BBC TV!

I suppose it could be worse...you could have had Patrick Kielty.

the whole business of pedigree dogs is somewhat weird. We were discussing it on the New River walk yesterday. Emsk told me that there was a breed of dog whose eyes pop out on a/c of it being bred to have bulgy eyes.

If the animal welfare ppl wanted to do something useful they could take hundreds of mongrels on heat along to Crufts and release them there so they could get it on.

Grandpont Genie, Monday, 12 March 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

I watched about ten minutes of it. Shit, there be some funny looking dogs.

chap, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

I know, but some of them are so lovely too.

accentmonkey, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

What, no mention of Fabulous Willy yet? Or is that just too obvious?

Madchen, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

He was pretty fabulous, bless him, although we were more amazed by the two fabulous hours that those boys put into grooming him before showing him, and neither of them actually owns him. I liked the flat coated retriever best, though.

I dearly hope the TV Burp people saw the two dogs "dancing" to James Bond theme tunes last night.

no i did not! (lmao here, i never heard such a thing...)

i was talking about dalmatians being stupid and vicious, which i have only heard said via, um, hearsay.

emsk, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

No, the pedigree dogs thing was, err, either in the Guardian or Country Life as those are the only two things I ever read. I think the former. It was Pekinese.

Dalmations are not stupid and vicious, I have had at least two, and they were both utter sweethearted dogs.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Though it might well have been Country Life, as they had a very large article about cross breed dogs like Dorgies and Labradoodles and things. (Since the Queen has now endorsed Dorgies, apparently cross breeds are alright by CL.)

no i did not! (lmao here, i never heard such a thing...)

who was it then? Somebody def said it. Must've been Asia or Ed.

Grandpont Genie, Monday, 12 March 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I have never heard of a particular breed of dog whose eyes pop out. I have heard of various breeds of dogs that have back problems or are prone to ear infections, such as corgis or bassets, but the freaky, unhealthy ones are the result of irresponsible breeders (which, of course, is a side effect of the whole pedigree dog thing, but you can't legislate for the rubbishness of some backyard breeders or puppy farmers).

I dearly hope the TV Burp people saw the two dogs "dancing" to James Bond theme tunes last night.

I know. Sometimes Sky Plus is truly the work of the gods.
