Is there anyone from Wisconsin here? I have a question about Leinenkugel beer.

I bought some tonight cuz I have never seen it before on the east coast. I got the Sunset Wheat. It says they have been around since 1867, but I've never heard of it! and i'm pretty beery. anyway, it's not unpleasant. it's kinda half hefeweizen and half ameribrew. meaning, it's light and sweet like an ameribrew, and yet it's really murky and definitely wheaty like a darker hefeweizen. It's kinda cool! It's almost what i would imagine the original American beers made by Germans a hundred or more years ago would have made for an American market. No doubt, all the big breweries that suck so hard now started out making beers like this. It's like a time capsule! Yuengling Porter (and no other by them) is a similar time capsule. PLUS, they make it with coriander which is a standard ingredient in a euro wit bier. and when i say it's light and sweet, i mean in an american way, not in a wit bier way. it's not as complex as a belgian wit, you know (and i wouldn't doubt that there is some corn sweetening their wheat in there). this is a very decent non-micro mass produced beer! would be perfect for summer. Thanks, Chippewa Falls!

Leiney is a Minnesota staple! It's awesome.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

I just knew there had to be a cute nickname for it!

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

Of the varieties I've had, I prefer Leinie's Original to any of their boutique beers, but that's just me. Sunset Wheat was too lemony for my taste. Still, a great brewery.

Honey Weiss is pretty much my go-to beer.

Dan I., Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

And most bars sell it as one of the "cheap" beers!

Dan I., Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Northwoods Lager is pretty good too.

dan m, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Only Dans have replied to this thread.

dan m, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

And scotts, damn it!

dan m, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

also
S: Octoberfest, Big Butt, Creamy Dark
D: Berry Weiss (so nasty that I've been afraid to try the apple one)

Dan I., Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

the apple one is really gross. it's basically juice. but I like the original and leiney's red.

I've always considered Leinenkugel a commercial beer, but a step up from Miller, Pabst, Blatz, etc. I've got a soft spot for Leine's Red, I actually crave it sometimes.

Jordan, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

Oy, i'll say it's a step up from something like Blatz! i have just finished the 6-pack and it gets a big thumbs up from me! i should play some Die Kreuzen in its honor.

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

I first had Leinie's Original on my honeymoon in Dodgeville, WI and I'm a fan.

Jenny, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't drank a Leinie's in ten years!

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

It's the preferred beer for about half of my family! Too bitter for me, I like rice blends, but the berry weiss VERY COLD is suitable for a summer afternoon. Do they make a triple-bock, too? That's what my aunt likes. My sister has a giant Leinie mirrored bar sign over her fireplace. Married life, so domestic!

Yon Yonson to thread.

sunset wheat tastes like Fruity Pebbles

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

(haven't tried any of the others, though the Minnesotan in lab swears by them)

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Leinenkugel is owned by Miller Brewing Co. and has been for years

Bnad, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, Leinenkugel. I've never had any but my mom and her side of the family are all from Chippewa Falls so I have heard about it a lot. I thought they brewed one of those fake microbrews there now.

walterkranz, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

Feh.

Nothing Leinies makes fucks with the glory that is the New Glarus Brewing Company.

Spotted Cow.

Or my personal favorite: Fat Squirrel.

Laugh if you will, all of Wisconsin laughs back at you.

Now I need to go make an interstate beer run.

Minnesota's beer is mostly shit.

Siah Alan, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

i've never been a great big fan but i like the Red a lot. and yeah i forget how ubiquitous it is up here where the rest of the country is like huh?

as long as we're on the subject: i think Summit tastes metallic and unfriendly, Grain Belt is cloying. I like Point a lot.

gff, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

a summer sampler 12-pack was brought home on friday; i had nothing to do with it, don't judge. anyway inside of it, in addition to three of each of the four types of gross, really artificial tasting beer equivalent of crystal light, was a freakin NEWSLETTER complete with articles (some of which were printed in comic sans), photos of people standing next to lakes/campfires drinking while leinenkugel, and recipes - one was for something called Honey Weiss Creamy Beef and Cheese Enchilada and Dip. so basically is there a more lutherany beer? no probably not.

also, speaking of wisconsin beer, there is to be a laverne and shirley movie

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 28 March 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

man when I lived in Iowa I drank a whole lotta Leinenkugel

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Sunday, 28 March 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

when i lived in ohio i had some of this and didn't like it. it generally tastes like juice.

harbl, Monday, 29 March 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah like that, but not even like 100% juice Juicy Juice, more like acrid Sunny D "juice-flavored beverage"

iiiijjjj, Monday, 29 March 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

also hate the name leinenkugel, far too many syllables

iiiijjjj, Monday, 29 March 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

wait--there are a million beers brewed in wisconsin? why get mad at sconnies for this one in particular?

by another name (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

who's mad at sconnies?

iiiijjjj, Monday, 29 March 2010 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, iiiijjjj OTM.

Sundar, Monday, 29 March 2010 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

well, nobody. but i reserve the right to take offense anyhow.

by another name (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2010 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

don't take offense! i love wisconsin beer. lakefront, sprecher, and of course new glarus: all favorites of mine. and i really like the new old schlitz formula, i was drinking that last weekend. a 6 pack of tall boys for $5!

just wanted to voice my opposition to leinenkugel's, which i believe is poison and/or smirnoff ice in a beer's body.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 29 March 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, you can't argue with that.

PBR is also from wisconsin, i believe.

by another name (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2010 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

yup, just like old style is/was, since i'm not sure whether any of those beers can technically claim wisconsin as its origin anymore since pabst brewing co. inc. is headquartered in suburban chicago and is brewed probably in like new jersey or texas or something. i know for a fact the old pabst brewery (and blatz brewery for that matter) are slated to be mixed-use condo developments in milwaukee.
