hi, not as much 'buzz' or something around it this year, but if you're an ilxor and in austin, texas for sxsw, or just live here (hi texas sam!), this is the thread for you. get in touch, even. pretty full schedule for me this year but late friday, some of saturday, and most of sunday day look pretty clear for me (unless i go to the salt lick in driftwood sunday afternoon), so let's get drinks and all that.

also to be all industry douchebag for a second, there is *ahem* beggars and 4ad showcases at emo's tomorrow night (wednesday) at which i will be in my official capacity as a *ahem* industry douchebag, so say hi if you can.

see y'all soon (i hope!)...

hstencil, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 07:27 (eighteen years ago)

try to see lost in woonsocket if you can!

冷明, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

what DELICIOUS RESTAURANTS are you planning on trying? besides the salt lick which as a vegetarian does not excite me.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

hi dere

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

tell me of potential fappage and i will try to be there. my brother is in town too though so he gets first priority (also SXSWi has just burned me to a crisp and I'm in bed recuperating.)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I got some meatspace OG palz who I will hang out with first and foremostest. But probably could stop in at some outter the way joint like my old faves Lala's or Draught House or Carousel. Oh who am I kidding, I'll probably be in one of those dives like usual anyway.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 March 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

the carousel would be cool. tomorrow i'm being a pleb though and heading down to auditorim shores for public enemy.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

white mice are playing the load showcase on saturday. their new record is great. evil noise rock.

Edward III, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

i think it is humourous that there is a venue called EMOS...

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's been around long before "emo" was an established part of music vocabulary.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Whee! I've got plans tomorrow night too, but Saturday is pretty open.

patita, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

sxsw plans?

sat. during the day would be cool with me, maybe a bar meetup? some friends' nick lowe cover band is playing at Ego's sat. at 4 and then sat night I'm going to try and catch PPT.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

that doesn't stop it being funny ms misery :)

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

I try not to pollute my thoughts of such a classic venue!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

also better austin venue and possibly funnier name: beerland.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

yup, hitting Elysium for the Japan Nite showcase.

Emo's is so un-emo... last time I was there the crowd was very aggressive and there was nearly a fight!

patita, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

ahh, emo fights. Have I ever been in any? not sure. probably too drunk to remember.

seeing the gamblers today with some other crappy bands.

tomorrow, G wants to swing by Waterloo for the Stooges (me, hah!) and then we'll do public enemy, who knows afterwards. early saturday afternoon and evening I'm up for whatever.

yay free shows!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Emo's is so un-emo
I think Emo's was Emo's long before before the musical genre "emo" was invented.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, maybe I just had heard of one but not the other.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

can someone take a picture of the s&m flintstones mural at emo's if they get a chance? i can't make sxsw this year.

stevie, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

If I go in in the next few days I will.

I took my mother to Emo's once. I feel very bad for that now.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Emo's smells way too much like piss and sounds way too much like shit to be anywhere near classic. Although they do pull good acts.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

My big plan right now is to be at the Scion Ghostface/Rakim thing on Saturday, then wander around to whereever I can find free shows/drinks.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Scion Ghostface/Rakim thing on Saturday

WAHT dude I will be all up in that.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I bet it's Sam's kinda scene, too.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

totally, where is that? I haven't seen it.

My plan for Sat. though is the Ozone Mag showcase at Visions.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

Noon at Stubbs, but you gotta do an RSVP thing on the web. Here's the link

http://www.scion.com/austin/

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

sweet, thanks!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

thanks sam!

stevie, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

you mean austin??
I don't think I did anything (though if I did, yr welcome!)

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

pssst - Flintstone bondage porn at emo's!

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

oh, haha, gotcha. i'm planning to leave in a couple of hours for the volcom show at Jackalope's. I should get to work. :(

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

ah, GIS

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

i was surprised that mural was still there, heck it was there when i was in austin in 2003 on tour.

i ran into ms misery and her lovely dude g tonight at jaime's spanish village, where i had a wonderful meal with wolf & cub and emma pollock's band. i'm getting a little burnt out on tex-mex though (shock, horror! did he say that?) and i really need some BARBECUE really fucking soon.

here's what i think i might see in the next few days, heavy on the work stuff:

friday:

2.00 pm - Future of the Left - mp3.com performance (this is andy from mclusky's new band)
5.00 pm - Wolf & Cub - Aussie BBQ at brush square park
8.00 pm - Public Enemy - free park thing
10.00 pm - Times New Viking, Clockcleaner - time out new york party at exodus
1.00 am - Dead Meadow at club deville

saturday:

12.00 pm - The Early Years - hot freaks party at mohawk
2.00 pm - the Ponys - hot freaks party at mohawk
8.00 pm - Dead Meadow - jaime's spanish village
maybe some todd p stuff, dunno

missed roky's ice cream social today, as well as other stuff. gonna take a disco nap but might go see the ponys tonight. if i can stand being at emo's again, that is.

hstencil, Friday, 16 March 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

i was surprised that mural was still there, heck it was there when i was in austin in 2003 on tour.

It's been there as long as I've been going to emo's! (10+ yrs?)

Indeed a pleasant surprise to randomly run into Stence. Jaime's is just okay tex-mex, bit overpriced.

also def. doing PE tonight and will try to catch a Stooges taping for KEXP here on campus. Tomorrow, Rakim & Ghostface that Austin tipped above.

i'm tired. must stop drinking. just can't hack starting in the afternoon and going on and on and on. . .

Ms Misery, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

I gotta farewell party for a friend who's going on a six month (!) hike of the Appalachians tonight, but I'll try to talk the crew into a PE visit. Yo! Bum Rush the Show!

They're not a group as a whole who are very into the hippity-hoppity rappity-rap music, though, so it's a long shot.

Oilyrags, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

The Draught House will probably be almost empty except for us, though, so feel free to come by and fap with us.

Oilyrags, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

Don't know if any of you heard of this (I only did yesterday) but it looks good. Unfortunatley today's the last day:

http://www.kexp.org/events/sxsw.asp

yeah Austin, Draught House is pretty off the sxsw-path!

Ms Misery, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

plug: my best friend's band is playing the absolutely kosher show at 9 on saturday.

lauren, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

it was thanks for the emo's pic!
i am unlikely to find dos equis on tap at the pub in forest gate i am visiting tonite...

stevie, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

alright, my friend got us on the guest list for the stooges/austin city limits thing. so i'm off to 'hah!' at the hundred or so people waiting in line. and then, who knows. hopefully my no-drinking decision will stand in the face of all the day's free beers. (yeah right.)

Maybe I'll see some of you guys this weekend. I look like this and generally dress like I don't give a shit.

Ms Misery, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

I've got a picture of myself on one of the whaddaya look like threads from a few months back, but can't remember which one. Anyway, my hair and beard have grown much longer (and hence curlier) and unkempt since then.

Anyway, I'm pretty big, nearly six four and nearly 250lbs and a big fat middleaged whiteboy nerd, so it'll be tough to spot me in the throngs, since that describes nearly 87% of all sxswers.

Oilyrags, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

SXSW hipster industry weasel scavenger hunt:

I spotted a guy in black leather pants and a pink sweater miming a golf swing right by the bus stop in front of the Capitol.

Here's my fat nerdy whiteboy grill. Hope to see you guys at the show!

Oilyrags, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Go see Danava! *sob* I wish I were there...

Andi Mags, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in Austin, though I'm probably not going to be hitting the clubs this weekend.

Let's not drag Emo's through the mud, it's a great club. I was just there last weekend to see Deerhoof. They rocked!

Here's what I'm doing in Austin tomorrow which is my birthday, hint hint:

Original Pancake House with my family and my wife's sister's family for breakfast
Hudson's On The Bend for dinner - They serve rattlesnake!

Clubs I recommend to go to downtown:
Casino El Camino
The Ritz
The Parrish

Whole Foods is huge downtown!

Moodles, Saturday, 17 March 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

I am mad pissed that I didn't rsvp for that Ghostface show sooner.

FUCK I knew better.

Next time.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 17 March 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

http://ccinsider.comedycentral.com/cc_insider/2007/03/messing_with_te.html

funnies are happening

kingfish, Saturday, 17 March 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

man fuck homeland security for screwing rod y gab out of their sxsw show (among many others in recent and upcoming weeks)!

tehresa, Saturday, 17 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

missed public enemy due to airline problems with one of my bands. yesterday was kind of a nightmare. thankfully after 5 i was free so i just decided to get super-wasted. times new viking and clockcleaner were fucking AWESOME.

today i've seen the early years and the ponys kick ass, just got back to the hotel from seeing the weird weeds and the shivers be great. on to dead meadow shortly! they're also playing club deville at 1 am tonight, go if you can! i'm staying up all night to start shuttling bands to the airport at 3:30 am.

hstencil, Saturday, 17 March 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

also ms misery if you see this my number hasn't changed from a few years ago, so if you still have it, give me a call.

hstencil, Saturday, 17 March 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

The Weird Weeds! I'm envious, they're a great band. Good to hear they went down well.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 March 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ghost and Rakim were fucking genius. I drank Tanq and tonics on Bob Goochionie's tab all afternoon and danced my wide ass narrow. I am sunburned to the point I look like a boiled lobster. I will have a hangover to rival the Tyburn prison gallows tomorrow.

I didn't even have to use my AK...

Today was a good day.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 18 March 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

nice, sounds good. woulda been nice to see ghostface but it wasn't in the cards.

dead meadow were INCREDIBLE at club deville last night. like mind-alteringly awesome. like the best show i've ever seen them play, so fucking heavy. great crowd, too.

i'm off soon to get some bbq, totally done now except to return the rental and get on my 6:15 pm flight! thanks austin, it's been swell.

hstencil, Sunday, 18 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to hear about Dead Meadow as well -- I've enjoyed them well enough but maybe now they're raising their game!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, this year was a total bust

phil-two, Sunday, 18 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

though at least i got $1200 in airline vouchers and wasnt near the balcony railing/wall of the vice party when it collapsed and fell. all the good afterparties got shut down. sxsw organizers being hos, i think.

i threw up ironworks beef ribs all over the toilet of some party and it tasted almost as good coming back up!!

i think maybe not come back next year.

phil-two, Sunday, 18 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

sorry I didn't catch any of you.

ghostface/rakim ended up not needing rsvps, it was just walk in. saw the stooges at the austin city limits stage, iggy pop (what a weirdo) about 6 feet away. awesome. pe, awesome. this weekend was 'i'm going to see rappers I saw 20 years ago, damn I'm old" weekend. Also PPT from Dallas, check out. awesome hip hop. the w.g. shivers are my friendz.

i'm dead and done

Ms Misery, Sunday, 18 March 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I should have mentioned that one of Ghost and Rakim's opening acts, "Mickey Avalon" is now possibly the lamest warmup I've ever suffered through. That includes the white reggae band from Boulder CO that performed a toast about veganism.

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 March 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

Also the time I fell asleep while Queensryche was getting the room ready for Metallica.

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 March 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

mickey avalon was very painful. what moist ballsack did that guy crawl out from under?

Ms Misery, Monday, 19 March 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

"Where are all the breakdancers in the house?"

I dunno Mickey. Where are the rappers?

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 March 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

ghostface was on my flight home.

hstencil, Monday, 19 March 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

did you share a hennesey with him?

Ms Misery, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

Grey Goose, surely.

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 March 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

naw i didn't wanna bother him.

hstencil, Monday, 19 March 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)
