Poptimism ALL DAYER, Good Friday, 6 April! Music, Dancing, Crisp Tasting, Everything!

As the first Friday of April happens to be Good Friday, we thought we'd take the opportunity to host an ALL DAYER at The Union Tavern from 3ish until 12!

There will be a selection of more sedate afternoon DJ sets, including the Tim 'Opkins Country Hour and the Martin Skidmo' Soul and R&B revue. There will also be board games and guess the crisp and whatever else we come up with in the next three weeks, possibly even a KWIZ.

Early evening we will be having short, live sets from a number of artistes* including MJ Hibbett, Sarah Hamlin and our very own Tracer Hand playing country songs, just like momma used to make, or, er, something...

Then there'll be the usual dancing and nonsense, including special guest Lena, until we've all had quite enough and decide to go to the pakenham home.

*hey artistes, we have a couple of spare 20 minute slots if you'd like to play. However equipment is pretty limited and ideally we'd want you to pretty much plug into the speaker amp and get on with it, drop me a line if yr interested anyway.

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'll be in Scotland, I think :(

Tom D., Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

I would like to play a set! If I can just plug the laptop in!

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

Where's the MC Undanceable Dissonance Hour then? Pah...

(Steve can you keep both Lena & me posted as to when we'll be on - I'm presuming it'll be sometime in the afternoon? Ta)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

You totally need a POST ROCK section

(I'll get my coat)

tissp, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

no post rock.

lex pretend, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

something off Standards by Tortoise would be nice.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

Elektrickometheorie should do a POST POP set!

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

haha totally

tissp, Thursday, 15 March 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly I'm driving up to see my parents that day. Have a good time though.

Anna, Thursday, 15 March 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

MC, we'll keep you in the loop :) i'm imagining some sort of plan will come together over the next week or so...

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 15 March 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

woo, good friday RUIN!

(btw Carsmile, on a random note, how d'you know sue shmoo? the world is a peanut)

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 15 March 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

i went to school with her, she lived like 100 yds down the road from me when we were teenagers. she was asking the same about you!

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 15 March 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

I am now singing Sue Shmoo, the incredible Sue Shmoo (to the tune of The New Shmoo, obv).

is their food at the Union Tavern? if so what is it like? Strikes me that if we're gonna be there 3-12 we're gonna get a tad peckish....

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

the food is nice! i had scallops last time, to prevent me from getting too drunk. they were delicious

lex pretend, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Now if I could only find a cheap flight back.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

the boy stood in the Union Tavern, eating red hot scallops.....

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

It clearly didn't work, Lex.

I think I'll pick an appropriate moment and sneak out for pizza at La Porcetta down the road...

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

i'd love to play board games. I can make this I think!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 15 March 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh Mr Puzzleworth, will you teach me the basics of bridge?

I promise I will swot up on the Scrabble 2/3 letter words!

PS if I'm bringing the word list I'm afraid we're sticking with Chambers - I'm not forking out the extra for the Collins!

Sarah, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

I think a kwiz is possibly over-egging the fun pudding but a FOCUS GROUP is always a goer.

Can I bring the Allo Allo board game for some mildly xenophobic fun?

Matt DC, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

It'd be good to have an old school FOCUS GROUP. I was good at them.

jel --, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

i am up for FOCUS GROUP and BRIDGE and SCRABBLE - i am top notch at all 3 (skillz at second may have rusted over the years though)

lex pretend, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

I may be there, though it depends what time my train arrives.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 23 March 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

So now it's a week away, has anyone come up with anything approaching a schedule? Just so the bands have some idea when they're on, when (if?) they get to soundcheck - that sort of thing?

We need to know what time to tell the non-ILX half (third?) of the band when to turn up.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 30 March 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ed needs to be at spitalfields by about 7-7:30pm that evening and I think Lisa may be DJ-ing later that night, so afternoon would be good for us, apparently?

Masonic Boom, Friday, 30 March 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

Is anybody bringing a guitar? I just realised that although I am set up to play one, I don't actually have one to bring.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 March 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Even a beat-up old acoustic would do - and might actually be preferable!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 March 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

Um, kind of waiting for Carsmile to return for Barcalona on schedules. But afternoon sets are probably very easy to organise.

What kind of geetar do you need Tracer?

Pete, Friday, 30 March 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

I am bringing my guitar, but it is electric. The only acoustic I have is my new 12-string.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 30 March 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

i have a classical guitar you can use. i can't tell you any more because i don't know anything about guitars. it needs a string replacing but i have the string.

emsk, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

Ed, can I run my two effects pedals chains in stereo through your mixer thing?

In which case, I don't have to bring the baby voxes. Though actually, maybe I should bring the baby voxes and that way they will be at yours, and closer to the Luminaire for next week. Then maybe we could take everything over in a taxi.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Pete any kind will do!

I guess ideally, if it were acoustic, it would have one of those amplifier thingies that lets it plug into a sound system. But I won't be picky, obv.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

So now it's a week away, has anyone come up with anything approaching a schedule?

I was just about to ask this.

could the things I want to see be on the in the evening?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 31 March 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

hello i'm back :)

no doubt we will have a high powered planning meeting about this tomorrow after the radio show, i shall Report Back after :)

my initial thinking was performers between about 5 and 7 so if we're starting at 3ish, there should be plenty time for sound checks/line checks

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 31 March 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

FAO carsmile steve:

i'm coming to london next week to see Forced Entertainment's "Exquisite Pain" - i was speaking to Julio and he said you were a fan? anyway i have tickets to the show on monday 10th, gimme a shout if you will be about.

jed_, Monday, 2 April 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

or anyone else, of course!

jed_, Monday, 2 April 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

As it's Good Friday, I am playing a special Biblical themed set, where every song will have some sort of God and Jebus connection. This connection may be tenuous to the point of non-existance for some songs.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

I predict Roll Away the Stone by Mott the Hoople.

Grandpont Genie, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Jed, Carsmile and I saw 'Exquisite Pain' a year or so ago. Not sure I could go and see it again but then again this is ART and not for the likes of me.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i have decided against djing at poptimism this year

600, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

don't worry i think you've still got a good shot at Homecoming Queen

blueski, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

hello jed, do i know who you are? i do get confused.

Exquisite Pain is pretty damn good (the first 20 mins are like "hein", but then 2 hours later it's so good), but i am well skint at the mo and, as matt says, we saw it 18 months ago. i am going to the all-dayer at the south bank though.

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

ANYWAY, HERE IS THE RUNNING ORDER* FOR FRIDAY!

*running order subject to change

5.30pm Sarah H
6pm Kate and the Kurves

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I've been refreshing FT now for 15mins and the site still isn't giving me an order form.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

awesome, see you there!

g-kit, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

That looks good to us!

Looks like it is going to be me, Ed and Lisa on Friday.

g-kit are you coming? ::boggles::

Masonic Boom, Monday, 2 April 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

nah you don't know me, i was just wondering if you would be about. will miss the all dayer unfortunately - would love to see it.

jed_, Monday, 2 April 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone like playing country-style accompaniment - mandolin, fiddle, etc? - anybody who wants to jam on my songs is very welcome to!

i am still on the hunt for one of those portable pickups for acoustic guitars, where you stick the pickup into the resonator hole on a guitar, and plug the other end of into an amp. anybody who's got one, bring it along!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 2 April 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

mmmm - if my beloved and I make it, we will probably arrive during the focus group. BE WARNED.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 2 April 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

the focus group is going to be slightly different in style to previous ones, not much cogitating or discussing, just bang through it.

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 2 April 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

Eli, I have this mandolin thing, send me chords and I will investigate even if the answer is probably, in the end no due to lack of time.

Ed, Monday, 2 April 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Looks like we will be making this! Yay.

tissp, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

I am planning to unleash the full force of the worst pun ever made. You have been warned.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

tracer - i've got one of those - but i think one of the clips that holds the thing on the soundhole is broken - so might need to use cellotape or something.. i can check if you like..

ken c, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

hmm i don't think i want a broken one! i'm sure it will be fine - i can just stick a mic in front of the guitar.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer I have one of those, I'll bring it along.

tissp, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

awesome, tissp! thank you!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I intend to attend.

I am looking forward to the early afternoon slots.

If it is Easter themed, I may have to invite people from work, on the off chance that I actually manage to bring along someone called Jesus. I think that would make me the winner.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone ever written/released an Easter song? There are plenty of Christmas songs, birthday songs, season-based songs etc, but nothing for Easter that I can think of.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Bright Eyes by Arf Garfunkel is an Easter number one. There was once some talk of doing an Easter number ones special Poptimism. I don't think the talk was more than one unfinished sentence though.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

ROLL AWAY THE STONE!!!

anyway, some slightly annoying news, we're going to have to keep the music REALLY low during the day and possibly some of the evening too (although, on the upside, we may be downstairs for the evening bit). there is 0 we can do about this, i'm sure we will still have fun though :)

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Argh, argh, argh, am I going to have to bust out my acoustic guitar for this? Noooooooooo!!!

Well, hopefully if we use the mixer line rather than guitar amps, we can keep the volume quite low while still getting the good guitar sounds that come from overloaded pedals.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

It seems likely there will be a bit more cogitating for the focus group than was planned too :)

Groke, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

There is no way I could play Sticky & Brown on an acoustic guitar. That would be absurd. :-(

Can we just buy The Troublesome Neighbour a nice pair of really good acoustic earplugs? Or invite him round and buy him a drink and a nice bar of chocolate?

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

um, no.

i'm hoping that yr plan re mixer will be ok, but we'll have to play it by ear tomorrow.

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

if you don't like noise don't buy or rent a house next to a pub, for chrissakes!

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

I think, if possible, we should try and move downstairs just before the Focus Group. It's a case of 'see what happens' I suppose.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i think things are going to have to be pretty flexible.

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

I was debating coming to this, but I think my presence will be required elsewhere, i.e. spending quality time with the missus. But I probably will come to the FAP later in the month.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

oh dear, I fear that rail maintenance will mean that I cannot make this.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ playing by ear!

ken c, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Rail maintenance? That could affect me too, I suppose, although I am less likely to come than I thought, due to a combination of exhaustion and childcare commitments. If I do come, it will be well after the Skidmore/Hopkins double whammy, which is what I was most interested in anyway.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

we're going to have to keep the music REALLY low during the day and possibly some of the evening too

If this actually happened regularly me and my stupid ears might be able to attend more often :(

Mark C, Thursday, 5 April 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

so, is it really a three pee emm kick-off?

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 5 April 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

national anthems at 3pm i think

ken c, Thursday, 5 April 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

CarsmileSteve, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'll prob be there a bit later - gotta eat my pork and bok choi and pack up the records but not much later I'd say :)

Sarah, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

You will be pleased to learn my copy of I Am The Resurrection is knackered, so I will spare you the horror of even playing ten seconds of it.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

you have a copy of that song in the first place.

lex pretend, Friday, 6 April 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

SSSSHHHHHHH!!!!!

It was BLITZ spirit, we passed the ehadphones around for people to dance, an egg got stuck to the ceiling, we stole the brain and people danced to Dragonette yay!

Such fun. :-) One day I'll make it to one!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 April 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

I really enjoyed that - very nice change of pace. Good work Steve and Pete! The Focus Group format seemed to work as well - 50 minutes, bish bosh, kittens ahoy.

FG results - in very basic form - now up on Freaky Trigger by the way.

Groke, Saturday, 7 April 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Hello thanks Robster for helping solve my Cat puzzle! I am quite possible horrendously drunked! (Kat)

RickyT, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)
