...or are most of y'all waiting for Ned's NY visit? I for one will be going.

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...will it equal Glitter, or is Glitter an all-time camp classic that can never be bested?

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God, you Americans are so far behind..

N., Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What would you know about behinds? I think Mariah's is more impressive than Britney's.

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WASNT THERE LAREADY A MOVIE CALLE D CROSSROADS QWITH RALPH MACHIO?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CHECK YOUR FACTS OR PIPE DOWN, CAPTAIN CRETINOUS

N., Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't find much campiness at all in "Glitter", which was really disappointing. It was bad, but not even bad enough to really sink your teeth into. Certainly not a "camp classic that can never be bested". There are many candidates for that title, but for the moment let me nominate "Showgirls". Now there's a movie worth watching.

Sean, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But isn't it on everyday at 5pm on ITV?

jel, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

richard john gillanders, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all such morons, I swear to god. Ralph Maccio lives in my old neighborhood.

Ally, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still sad that I won't get to sit on a couch with Ned to watch Vai and Macchio's mammoth widdle-off! Wait, that sounds wrong.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and yet, oh so right.

jess, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just read like every review of this film outthere. I am very hyped.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me explain.
Crossroads UK = Soap Opera set in a motel outside Birmingham
Crossroads US = First (and potentially last) starring movie ve-hic-le for Britney Spears.

Pete, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OH SURE ALLY, LIKE YOU LIVE IN JAPAN

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Norman Phay, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

of course, that obscure-ed word probably isn't 'wanking'.

richard john gillanders, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kool Mo Dee was in it! Dude.

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Crossroads is actually the ultimate Tom Ewing movie.

Showgirls is actually better than Glitter, but I'm sorry, the cat makes it campy.

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hanley is 100% correct. There's a 1986 Walter Hill movie called 'Crossroads' starring Ralph Macchio and Joe Morton. It was 'inspired' by Robert Johnson - eg blues musician sells his soul to the devil at the crossroads (see also 'O Brother Where Art Thou?'). It is a lousy flick but has a goodish S/T by Ry Cooder, Jim Dickinson etc.

According to Haliwell, there was also a 1928 Japanese movie called 'Crossroads', and a 1942 'Crossroads' starring William Powell, Heddy Lamarr and William Powell.

Andrew L, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thats' a whole lot of William Powell. Leslie Halliwell is Geri Halliwell's uncle as you know. The Robert Johnson Crossroads is kind of Chuck Eddy's ultimate movie isn't it? White Kid = hair metal fan = present-day incarnation of RJ only bettah?

mark s, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer, am I going to have to deal with talk about a widdle-off all day today? You hurt me in my heart, you do.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

THANK YOU ANDREW. I SHALL BLESS YOUR GERMENT

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Mike. I touch the hem of yr germent.

Andrew L, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw crossroads today with my gurl. It was very good, and also sorta but not always camp. The musical numbers were plentiful and delicious, and the 12 yr olds in the audience all bawled uncontrollably at the "i neveah really wanted you, you were a mistake, get outta my life, daughter!" scene, tho we observed them after the film acting k-cool and like "yeah, we're so above all that". I almost cried once, at a different scene, and at the end of the movie I felt real good. Only complaint: brit couldn't play the early nerd part of the character for shit.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and the 12 yr olds in the audience all bawled uncontrollably at the "i neveah really wanted you, you were a mistake, get outta my life, daughter!" scene

At the show I was at, instead of crying all of the girls in the audience yelled "Oh my God!" in collective horror and disbelief at this scene. Then a man about Mark S.'s age ran out, sniffling - - he probably had a cold or allergy attack or something, but the idea that the scene made him break up in tears got me giggling uncontrollably for most of the rest of the movie.

Ebert be damned, it was actually not bad. Sterl is right about Brit not being very convincing as a nerd, though.

Nicole, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It can't be the ultimate me movie if it's actually quite good.

Tom, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bah

suddenly merely a benchmark s, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It can't be the ultimate me movie if it's actually quite good.

I wouldn't say "quite good" -- I would just say "not that bad".

Anyway it is the ultimate Tom E. movie because who else would get a thrill out of Shania and Shazza Crow singalongs?

Nicole, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I BET BRITNEY SHAKES HER LITTLE MERCY HEART IN THE VOLUME OF HER LOVE

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike has a vision.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned is Mork

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OH SURE ALLY, LIKE YOU LIVE IN JAPAN

I do, actually. I'm secretly an Anime character. I am Sailor Moon.

I still haven't seen Crossroads, I thought of doing it today but we just ended up like sleeping til 4 and then going to have margaritas. I'll do it next weekend.

Ally, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Moon yes, Sailor no.

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I take personal affront to that.

Ally, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
I know it's kinda late...but I finally saw this film...very funny...CHEESE FACTOR 10. Favourite bit: where the girls and the jailbird guy are climbing on the rocks to admire the vista...Jailbird helps Britney up and totally ignores the pregnant girl.

Poor old Dan Ackroyd.

jel --, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
I wuv lisping pregnant fistfighting trailer park girl.

I came out of this movie crying (and grinning and bouncing), though that was probably to do with me being emotional about other things this weekend. I think the bit where Kit and Mimi make up in the hospital actually made me cry though.

My fave line, where she's trying to reassure them about where she met this guy: "He's kinda friends with some guys I know from the trailer park".

Graham, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to mention all the hopped up on tartrazine 8 year girls running around the cinema throughout the film - Christ - the popcorn/paper cup CARNAGE from the previous screenings. The audience was small girls, their parents, me, and two shaved-head butch guys at the back that looked like they really should have been watching the cup final at the time.

Graham, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven years pass...
