is any of this shit even remotely believable? Suspects tortured for three years will tend to say just about anything.

"secret CIA prison network"

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

You'd think the administration would have released better pictures of what-his-face by now.

is there anything KSM hasn't taken credit for? (the Cole bombing?)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

I saw the headline this morning in the newspaper and my first thought was 'a tortured confession is worthless' and my second thought was 'show trial'. If Bush, Cheney, Rumsfled et. al. couldn't see that problem coming when they first signed off on the idea of torture, it was because they were willfully blind to it. It's like a blinking neon sign. We are ruled by crack heads.

As far as we know, he had nothing to do with Jennifer Hudson being eliminated on American Idol.

o. nate, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

I hate to state the obvious here, but the only reason the Pentagon released these transcripts today is to get Abu Gonzales off the top of the front page.

Hatch, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

well duh

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Abu Gonzales?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's a pretty widely-used nickname, innit?

Hatch, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

As in Alberto Gonzales' asinine legal advice--in the January 25, 2002, "torture memo"--was responsible for the kind of prisoner abuse that we saw in the Abu Ghraib photos. And, come to think of it, the torture (waterboarding et cetera) that undoubtedly led to KSM's confession to every crime ever commited in the history of the world.

Hatch, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

wasnt this on showtime hosted by david duchovny

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

As of WWII, we did. Hard to say about today.

Aimless, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Won't they just farm it out to a federal pen? Maybe not even say which one (citing "security concerns") so there won't be a visible protest/media

one year passes...

From today's NYT:

The military trainers who came to Guantánamo Bay in December 2002 based an entire interrogation class on a chart showing the effects of “coercive management techniques” for possible use on prisoners, including “sleep deprivation,” “prolonged constraint,” and “exposure.”

What the trainers did not say, and may not have known, was that their chart had been copied verbatim from a 1957 Air Force study of Chinese Communist techniques used during the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of them false, from American prisoners.

Brilliant.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

Well, you see, the US armed forces didn't have a lot of practise teaching torture techniques and were kind of winging it.

Aimless, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

Ever resourceful

Super Cub, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

aimless otm except for SERE school, which trains aircrews to resist exactly the stuff in the 50s/60s communist manuals

I just want to track down the officers who disobeyed the code of conduct and the UCMJ by passing this shit down and give them just desserts. They should at least be named and shamed even if they don't get convicted of a war crime

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

imo enlisted folks shouldn't get a pass for obeying unlawful orders either but bit of an idealist over here
