NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co. has started production on an animated musical fairy tale called "The Frog Princess," which will be set in New Orleans and feature the Walt Disney Studio's first black princess.

The company unveiled the plans at its annual shareholders' meeting in New Orleans.

John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and the Disney-owned unit Pixar Animation Studios, said the movie would return to the classic hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has become the industry standard. He called the film "an American fairy tale."

For the most part, who cares, but I think it's interesting to get this pitch so quickly on the heels of whatever picture it was a year or two ago that was constantly referred to as "the animation giant's final hand-drawn feature film" or whatever. Could they really not wait to pull the New Coke "the people demanded it" switcharoo, or was Chicken Little really that bad?

Glad to see they've found a way to do it without actually having to film in New Orleans/spend any money there.

the last traditionally animated one was "Home on the Range". It tanked.

i'm guessing this one will bomb too :( Even the shittiest CG kids movies make more money now.

Yeah, it's a treat.

my daughter wanted to get it and my reaction was "eh yeah whatever" but the overall premise was well done and there was a lot of stylish animated sequences. plus the songs were not all uniformly abominable like they usually are in Disney films.
