no thread yet? somehow there are now 150 locations and "another thousand are being phased in." if they have to become the in-n-out of the east, is there any hope their partisans might be less annoying?

W i l l, Monday, 19 March 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

i'll take them over any fast food place, but i'll take your average non-fast food burger over them. the reason you feel compelled to keep going back is the monstrous cup of hfcs.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

in-n-out is a lot better at controlling each franchise and maintaining quality from one location to the next, as far as I've been able to tell. most of the recent five guys installations I've been to can't hold a candle to the "original" handful of locations, in terms of food or even cleanliness and atmosphere.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i got some gift certs to these five fellows from my boss for my birthday. i have yet to use them, because i think the first five guys burger i ate is still somewhere inside of me

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

warning: NEVER ORDER THE LARGE FRIES

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

i want these burgers. :(

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

they are yummy at all the branches that i have been to. but seriously, watch out for the fries.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Burger and Fries

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

"he died as he lived...with fried potatoes leaking out of his pores"

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

my wife and i love the fries, and we can barely finish a small.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah after i eat the fries i hate potatoes for weeks, and i'm irish.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

i think three people in my office helped me finish them

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

i want have cheezburger all the time

blueski, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

i'm now torn between going to five guys for lunch and going to hooters

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

answer: both

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

does ally have a sister that got a job at five guys?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

We don't have this or In n' Out in the midwest. :(

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

We don't have it either in NYC, but looks like it's coming soon, in my old 'hood.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

The best part about this place is the inadvertent jokes one makes involving the name. Close second is the burgers. Yes, they really, really need a portion of fries smaller than the small.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Britain needs quality fast food chains. I miss the In-n-Out burger, though you reckon quality control is fairly simple with such a small menu to master. Is the Five Guys joint the same as far as menu options?

Gukbe, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

i would eat all this burgers n fries.
the "coming soon" brooklyn location isn't too far, and the weather is getting nicer.

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

The menu has like four things on it, so that part isn't the problem - I've found the food quality and especially service vary from location to location.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

that's too bad. i've only been to a non-original location once and it was fine, but i guess it's inevitable with franchising

W i l l, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

wish five guys was open 24/7

ian, Monday, 6 April 2009 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

I like

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (Hurting 2), Monday, 6 April 2009 07:02 (sixteen years ago)

Fries so gooooooooooood, especially if you bring some seasoned salt to put on them. I reward myself for good deeds by going there and eating an entire large order and a coke.

f. hazel, Monday, 6 April 2009 07:34 (sixteen years ago)

wasnt that impressed first time i went there, but am basically addicted now

through hellfire and aspergers (cankles), Monday, 6 April 2009 08:32 (sixteen years ago)

I went this afternoon and got, like, an entire brown bag filled to the brim with french fries. It was like a picture from a kid's book.

f. hazel, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 04:50 (sixteen years ago)

haha i've had a craving for 5 Guys so much lately, and now i'm up late and hungry, so this thread being bumped right now is like ian sharing his yearning with me.

Shawty Lo Collier (some dude), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

o fuk I want five guys right now.

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

wow, theres one of these like two miles away and ive never even heard of them. burgers and fries isnt really my thing tho.

iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:06 (sixteen years ago)

I do not really like their fries very much, but I will say that getting really drunk and going to Five Guys to plow through a cheeseburger and a whole mess of peanuts is one of life's special joys.

C-L, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

would smash.

ian, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:28 (sixteen years ago)

"Coming Soon" to a Coral Gables location near me. First one in Miami, I think.

Does FGFB&F have non-meat burgers (e.g., soy; garden; veggie) and, if so, are they good?

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:45 (sixteen years ago)

Haha, just checked. Not the first one in Miami. But the first one in the Gables.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:47 (sixteen years ago)

only had em that one time in Georgetown, but then I try to confine my red meat/fries consumption at my advanced age, as you all should when you reach yr dotage.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

I've never been to any FG that had non-meat burgers, though they do have a "grilled cheese", which is just the burger minus the meat. :( I'm not holding my breath on them adding non-meat burgers; their menu is pretty simple and hasn't changed since I first starting going there.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

there's one of these in the town where i work--i am a little scared of it tbh

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

they have veggie burgers, dont listen to that fucken cumlord

through hellfire and aspergers (cankles), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

Either the FG in your area are way cooler than the ones in mine, or you're just talking about the veggie/grilled cheese sandwich they have, which is what I described, a burger without the meat. To me, the patty makes it a burger, and they don't have non-meat patties, so no veggie burgers. They even have something in their FAQ about what they server is not really a veggie burger.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

the whole thing sounds like a shitty east-coast version of in n out except inserted into strip malls instead of in standalone buildings.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

What makes you say it's shitty?

WmC, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

Shawty Lo Collier (some dude), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

the cool thing abt in and out is its so cheap - its not particularly better than the other nu fast food places - shake shack pwns all imo

c?rvel (ice cr?m), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

i'm thinking it's shitty because in n out is really tightly associated with the abstract concept of "california" in my mind. it has so much style and so many quirks and it just kind of embodies something to me.

meanwhile, five guys is in a faceless strip mall and has a generic block-lettered sign. maybe i would like it but they're not trying very hard to sell it to me.

also, shake shack opens today, 320 metres away

i'm off to patty & bun instead tho

my eventual wife (stevie), Friday, 5 July 2013 11:38 (twelve years ago)

shake shack seems fairly cheap in comparison to competitors, £5 for single shackburger, have not laid eyes on one for size comparison though. and yeah burgers are so last year, i'm still thrilled to be alive at this exciting time.

ledge, Friday, 5 July 2013 11:45 (twelve years ago)

It's amazing to me that it's taken so long for this kind of thing to happen; it's a friggin' goldmine. I walked by last night when I was in town - there was a 10-block-long queue (which the guy told me was about a 90 minute/2 hour wait).

That new Shake Shack is ACROSS the street from Meat Market (and about a 10 minute walk from Honest Burger, Lucky Chip, Burger & Lobster, etc. etc.) - obviously the burger bubble is going to burst one of these days.

I think California Pizza Kitchen would be enormous in the UK - besides the better-than-any-of-the-other-popular-chains food, there's a big market for CA-branded stuff (e.g. the UCLA merch that's everywhere). I'm holding my breath for a Baja Fresh someday.

Walter Galt, Friday, 5 July 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)

god i hate cpk

my eventual wife (stevie), Friday, 5 July 2013 11:57 (twelve years ago)

I like their salads. I haven't found a whole lot of places in the UK that make big, meal-sized salads with decent produce. The salad bar at my work canteen doesn't even have green things in it - today it's beetroot, sweetcorn, potatoes, shredded carrots, cole slaw, pinto beans. CPK salads are nice (if you get the dressing on the side, because they tend to drench them)

Walter Galt, Friday, 5 July 2013 12:08 (twelve years ago)

oh, i'm sure they are. i'm just a pizza purist. would much rather roberta's expanded to the uk though (but they are just one resto, not a chain)

Honestly, it's EVERYWHERE. They've marketed UCLA as a "designer brand."

Here are a couple of sections from some big shops/catalogs:

http://www.reemclothing.com/Mens-Clothing/UCLA-Designer-Clothing.html

http://www.next.co.uk/shop/brand-ucla-0

Walter Galt, Friday, 5 July 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

The world famous UCLA brand originated from the University of California in Los Angeles. This world renowned university was established in 1919 and a hoard of top celebrities graced its hallways back in the day including the ultra cool and distinguished James Dean and the Doors front man and rock legend Jim Morrison. Everyone has heard of the mighty UCLA and the beauty of its campuses, successful sporting heritage and overall laid back cool of the California lifestyle could mean only one thing - the UCLA clothing brand would be a massive hit.

I was sort of into Five Guys when they first opened here but it's been two years at least since I felt any real desire to go in there. Same goes for Shake Shack, for that matter.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 6 July 2013 04:45 (twelve years ago)

lookin' fwd to trying these dudes out but we've had pretty good american-style burgers for a coupla years at least, cf byron. anyone remember the era of the gourmet burger co? seemed like the dawning of this era of superior-to-mcdonalds hamburgerage but i wouldn't eat one of their patties for any money now.

my eventual wife (stevie), Saturday, 6 July 2013 09:46 (twelve years ago)

Never appreciated GBK's artisanal bread and pineapple bullshit. Byron ok but not dirty enough.

ledge, Saturday, 6 July 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)

Underwhelmed by shake shack, if five guys aren't any better I might have to become a burger sceptic again. Also not sure why they need over 20 people in a (tiny) kitchen, not to mention the four people on tills and ten or so scattered around outside doing table clearing and crowd control.

ledge, Saturday, 6 July 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

shake shack is only sort of okay here, too. the shakes are good, if pricey. and frozen custard is still a novelty in my book. but the burgers are just decent. also the lime-&-slate colo(u)r scheme is so teal&orange2.0

my eventual wife (stevie), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

do people not make hamburgers at home in the UK?
shake shack is alright, i guess. always seems a bit expensive.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

Five Guys is okay but expensive for what it is in the US - no choice of cheese/etc. so it's a trumped up In-n-Out Burger for twice the money.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)

Like all you can eat nut palace

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 6 July 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)

Sort of intrigued by how brazen Five Guys is with the peanuts, for no good reason, given how strict so many other placers are with peanuts. All the peanut-sensitive kids probably have to cross the street when coming up on a Five Guys. I wonder if it matters with takeout, too? Peanut particles everywhere.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 July 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

There's a very good reason, namely that free roasted peanuts in the shell are fucking awesome.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 6 July 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

I've actually never seen too many people partake. I guess they claim their frying oil is less bad for allergies than other types of peanut oil, but the piles of actual peanuts make this moot. Legend goes the lines at the original location were so long they gave the peanuts out to sate hunger while the burgers were cooking. Now it's part of the brand, insists my wife, but afaic, the burgers and fries are the brand and I couldn't care less about the peanuts. Which is to say, if they were gone, I wouldn't be all "fuck Five Guys." I go for the meat and potatoes.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 July 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago)

I'd still go for the Cajun fries, but I would really miss the free peanuts if they stopped. Actually a few years back they used to have salted *and* unsalted peanuts, and now only have salted. Which made me a bit sad, as I preferred the unsalted ones.
