Simlish - C or D

Not being a gamer, I've only just become aware of the phenomenon of Simlish - that is, the weird universal gobbledegook language spoken by characters in The Sims.

But now this: [Removed Illegal Link]

Apparently loads of other artists have done Simlish versions of their songs for Sims games and add-ons.

When sung, I think it sounds a bit like Japanese. When spoken, it *almost* sounds as if it could be an actual language (and I know it does contain a handful of actual words that mean the same thing each time they're used - the very definition of a language, I'd imagine).

Despite its musical basis (sort of) I've put this on ILE because it's more of a language-based...thing than a music one.

Your thoughts on Simlish then, please. Is it the new Esperanto? Does it work? Where next for linguists/linguistics/?

(that's Lilly Allen's "Simle", a Simlish version of "Smile" as you'd imagine, with a new pixellated video)

I have caught myself saying 'soon soon'. People seem not to notice. Perhaps they are maddened but too polite to mention it, but anyway, I stopped playing The Sims and I don't do it anymore. Still, classic, because you can tell exactly what they mean.

Classic. My sisters and I used to wave our hands in the air and wail at each other.

I feel much less charitable toward Lily Allen than I did five minutes ago.

I remember the first time we played it, we spent ages checking the language settings and decided we must have bought a dodgy copy. We were in hysterics and shouting wtf are they SAYING?!

I say this to the b/f all the time! I love simlish. There is a Simlish Depeche Mode song on the New Wave station in the Sims2 (when you get one of the expansions). Hearing Dave Gahan singing in Simlish is mildly hilarious. There is also a Simlish Howard Jones and a Kajagoogoo.
