I just watched this (5 20+ minute episodes in all) last night. Wow. Starring Samuel L Jackson as Afro Samurai as well as his subconscious/imaginary friend/whatever. Scored by RZA. Incredible animation, some incredible blood-spurting battles, etc etc. Anyone else seen this?

I hope they make more episodes, one day.

No relation to afro ninja?

haha, no, but thanks for giving me a reason to google "afro ninja", that was fun.

I'm hoping it will eventually get a DVD release in a version un-edited for tv (there was still plenty of cussing, but it had commercial breaks, "previously on..." parts, title screens, etc), because it played out like a feature-length film, only chopped up.

(I am just now researching some of this stuff for myself):

Animation was by Studio Gonzo, some stuff I've seen (Transformers: Cybertron, Chrono Crusade), but nothing of their's I've ever seen looked anywhere near this good (a bit Aeon Flux meets the O'ren Ishii part of Kill Bill).

I loved the Empty Seven Clan baddies or whatever they were called.

I'm disappointed and kind of surprised that no other ilxors know this show...there were 25,000+ seeders!

I've looked at the soundtrack, but I haven't bought it.

I really really wanted to like it, but after I sat through a couple eps it didn't really grab me so I gave up. Is it better in one sitting?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

there was something about it on tv in the uk last night. apparently Sam L is hoping for a big budget live action movie remake in the near future.

I don't even know when/where this is/was being broadcast.

that image looks like something out of cowboy bebop

sleep, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

The animation is very Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo-esque, impossibly curvy women, blood spurting like fountains, proportions everywhere just fucked, etc.

I think it aired on Spike TV, not sure about reruns though.

There is no way this will translate as well into live-action. It had a kind-of moving-painting quality to it that would be ruined w/ live action. Any excuse for more RZA score though I am okay with.

yeah, this looks cool

good news from wikipedia:

The series has also been licensed for North American distribution by Funimation, whose DVD release is planned for May 22, 2007

You know my roommate did the torrenting, I think he might have been exaggerating on the 25k+ seeders, still, we got all episodes in one go, and I've personally only been able to find them as standalones. I'll ask him when I get home.
