Zookeeper who hand-reared Knut the polar bear found dead

The zookeeper who was a 'surrogate father' to the polar bear Knut has been found dead amid fears that he became depressed after they were separated.

Thomas Doerflein, 44, had been told to stay away from Knut because they were too close.

There were also concerns that Mr Doerflein could be injured during one of their regular wrestling bouts as Knut grew.

That article seems a bit sensational... the Guardian implies he died of natural causes, having been sick for a while: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/23/germany.endangeredspecies

sad news, though.

Zoos should just post disclaimers that ppl who wish to join the animals will not be rescued.

He was my favourite polar bear named Knut ever.

StanM, Saturday, 19 March 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

he seemed like a tragic figure, tbh

Elegant Bitch (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 19 March 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

He was the icebearian Pete Doherty, imho.

StanM, Saturday, 19 March 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

on the other hand, he was The People's Icebear too.

I saw him in 2009 and he didn't look in the best of health. I'll drink a maudlin toast to him while listening to Grauzone.

I can't believe – I count on Der Spiegel English for up-to-the-minute German animal coverage – and ILX beats me to this.

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Sunday, 20 March 2011 02:57 (fourteen years ago)

(IDK if anyone noticed but Der Spiegel talks about German critters several times a week, it seems like.)
