Well, depends on the day and whether it's a complete ruin or has groovy Tudor tableaux, innit.

Bolton Abbey isn't technically a castle, but it's definitely my favourite ruin. So atmospheric. I miss it.

I love both - slighted castles (what they call ones that were ruined to stop them being used again) are wonderful for romantic dreaming and mock sieges and the like.

I love the ones that have grown and incorporated other elements - places like Penshurst Place that started as defensive castles and just grew into sprawling country mansions as the country grew less turbulent and the fortunes of its owners changed...

Castles are great, especially ruins. I like ruins.

Corfe Castle is nice, and St Michaels Mount (is that a castle?). I don't spend enough time visiting castles, I should address this situation.

Also, I love going to the castle shop. I have a load of badges from various castles that I visited on family holidays.

I went to Carcassonne in France last year, it was cheesy as hell and we had absolutely shithouse food and ze locals weren't that nice. But I LOVED it! Castles are hugely classic.

Amelienborg Palace (the Danish version of Buckingham palace. V friendly guards! A friend of mine went right up to them pissed as a fart holding a pint glass and they calmly gave him directions home which was impressive seeing as he was looking for the river that he needed to cross [there is no river in Copenhagen!]? Bannerman’s Castle was already an enigmatic ruin in the middle of the Hudson River, a dreamy landmark for passing train travelers and a passionate cause for preservationists.

But then in the silence of last Saturday night, a large chunk of history suddenly disappeared when the castle’s stone, brick and cement sighed under a century’s weight of weather. Overnight, two-thirds of the eastern tower was gone, as well as one-third of the adjacent southern wall, leaving a gaping hole and concern over how to stop the crumbling.
