Top Five LBM Moments:

5. Handing out hot towels.
4. Moving the mic away to his subject in mid-question.
3.. "This is CBS!"
2. Seeing him walk by while loitering in NBC lobby circa. 1988.
1. Calvert DeForest IS... Roy Orbison.

RIP

I knew all about Larry Bud Melman years before I ever saw Letterman's show, thanks to Cracked and Mad magazines.

ah I missed this thread...

He was discovered by a couple guys I know who cast them in their NYU student films. When Dave hired them as writers, they had to have Calvert as well.

that Orbison impression: "Murthy."

And I don't get warm towels at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, btw.

I was amused at the obits that said "actor," though.

I'd forgotten the most hysterical element of his "Man in the Street" interviewer segments -- from [Removed Illegal Link]:

Better yet were the countless segments that sent Melman into the world as Letterman's "representative." He was the least professional TV personality imaginable; when he interviewed people, he'd begin a question holding the microphone close to his face, then jerk the microphone away midway through the question so that the rest of it was inaudible.

He also did some commercials. One of his 1-800 Collect ads (the one where he tries to call Seattle) was put to great use in the Grunge doc Hype!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 23 March 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

He would've been a great co-star for Edith Massey, no? Very similar ... style.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 23 March 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

He attended Poly Preparatory Country Day School in Brooklyn.
