If you drink every day, and to excess on weekends, are you an alcoholic?

nah
― the late great, Sunday, 21 September 2014 20:21 (eleven years ago)
how much every day and how much is excess
― macho nonreal (nakhchivan), Sunday, 21 September 2014 20:23 (eleven years ago)
1 or maybe 2 a day
Excess = hangover / almost missed appointments the next day

before my recent health probs I drank maybe a little more than that with maybe a little less of the bingeing & I wouldn't describe myself as one; I'm hesitant to use the term for all but the most obvious cases but it's def not a healthy intake & cutting down is always a good idea probably

it's up to you whether or not you want to live with hangovers, right? i mean, it's your quality of life, not anybody else's. i don't live with hangovers (because i don't drink at all) but i definitely have quality-of-life tradeoffs related to my own substance use.
but as far as missed appointments go, personally i would start to become concerned if my use began to interfere with my work. that's kind of a red flag for me.

btw i know many many many people who have 1-2 beers or glasses of wine with dinner every night and that doesn't seem like a big deal to me at all.

I drink every day, but never till at least 8 in the evening. I read a Luis Bunuel book in my 20's in which he confessed he drinks a bottle of red wine a day and he lived until 83, so this liberal alcoholism seemed like a future to me!
― xelab, Sunday, 21 September 2014 21:22 (eleven years ago)
v good for the heart, red wine iirc

i just started drinking white wine again after four months with no alcohol. i'm not ready for anything harder, but white wine goes down really nicely, especially in this warm weather.
