What can we expect from the next Conservative Government?

Labour are 10-15 points adrift, people hate Brown even more than Blair -and the budget doesn't seem to have done much to change that, and the Lib Dems are a complete waste of space - and so it looks like Toryboy is heading towards No.10.

So what can we look forward to?

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 22 March 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

argh

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

people hate Brown even more than Blair

Steady...

Tom D., Thursday, 22 March 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

we can look forward to four years of uproarious scandal and roistering good fun! oh, and a country even more fucked-up than it ever was under blair.

;_;

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

That lead does not even convert into a tory minority government.

Ed, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

So what can we look forward to?

Independence for Scotland and the break-up of the United Kingdom

Tom D., Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

The Tories have a lot to gain from Scottish independence.

Ed, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Of course, the New 1000 Year Reich

Tom D., Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

The Tories have a lot to gain from Scottish independence.

Yes, eternal power in England.

onimo, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

Cameron peeling off the latex mask to reveal scaborous oldschool Tory fuck beneath. Metaphorically, of course.

chap, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

"New Tories, New Danger" - yes, that really worked against Blair didn't it?

Tom D., Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone I know who has voted labour in recent years seems to dislike Brown.

Mainly cause of the dour-ness rather than policy(the great company I keep...)

personally I am willing to wait to he gets the proper chance to outline what he wants to do before decided my final opinion.

In a weird sought of way I sort of hope Cameron gets in to show people that the Tories havent changed much

secondhandnews, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Mainly cause of the dour-ness

Nice polite non-xenophobic euphemism for "Scottishness" there

Tom D., Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

Cam3ron was in the Borr1ngton (sp?) society, the most exclusive of all Oxford University cliques. They only ever have between about 4 and 10 members, handpicked for possessing extreme amounts of cash, being from the right families, white, male and landowning. Their general modus operandi is to locate the poorest student they can find, break into their room, trash it from head to toe and then leave a fat cheque (or, better still, wads of real cash). Just because they could. This could be (and often was) applied to restaurants as well. They're about as loathsome as it gets, and DC was one of 'em. Don't believe his bullshit.

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

In a weird sort of way I sort of hope Doenitz gets in to show people that the Nazis haven't changed much

is another way of putting it

Anyway, if the Tories get back in you can look forward to me emigrating to Canada permanently.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

I like Brown marginally more than Blair, he comes across as a sensible, unglamorous administrator rather than a crazed visionary. In other words, the dourness is actually a plus point for me.

chap, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

the Lib Dems are a complete waste of space

why is this I wonder? I suspect that its coz the ppl who could join them and stop them being a waste of space think party politics is a waste of space.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

You just know what number 7's voice is like.

People should remember that Cameron's appeal outside metro-London land is really piss-poor. By-election performance and Council election performance north of Hertfordshire has been woeful for a party aiming for government. As several have said, Cameron could be more their Kinnock than Blair.

The Boyler, Thursday, 22 March 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

Cue DC running onto the stage at election rally time and yelling "Al-RIGHT!" at all and sundry. Can't wait.

I'm fairly sure Labour are sitting on the cocaine stories (and photos?) about DC and Osbourne, just letting the "ooh he smoked" stuff get out the way, and then BAM.

That's what I hope, anyway.

It's more that DCs photo is full of cunts, while TBs is full of twats. TBH I'd rather have a twat than a cunt in #10.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 23 May 2008 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

No one has really answered this question. Is there an analysis of just what the conservatives have voted for and against in the last few years?

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 23 May 2008 07:40 (seventeen years ago)

There was a hint of what's to come in the votes on abortion and IVF I guess. According to this article 92% of Conservative MPs backed Iain Duncan Smith's call for fatherhood to be recognised when decisions about fertility treatment are being made and 83% of Conservatives (voted) for 22 weeks.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 23 May 2008 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

As a UK Civil Servant I can expect the Tories (as they did in their last manifesto) to insist that the vicious cuts performed under Labour don't go far enough and to actually depopulate the Civil Service to such a level that privatisation becomes the only option. So good luck on getting your passports from UK Passports PLC or your JSA from Dole Scum Are Not Welcome Here PLC.

Either that or they'll open each set of pay negotiations by sending someone round to piss in each individual Government employees' face.

Stone Monkey, Friday, 23 May 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

nine months pass...

"I want the police to do what they're supposed to do which is to fight crime, not waste time." Mr Grayling said that a Conservative government would reintroduce a sense of "right and wrong" in the criminal justice system.

"Fewer rights, more wrongs. The starting point has to be that reality of life today," he said.

I'm not saying the present government won't build huge prisons, although it doesn't have much time left to do anything, but if the tories want to lock up more people they will have to. Either way, it's the wrong way to go. This macho posturing is bullshit from any party and will lead to more crime, but the public seem to want to hear it.

Queueing For Latchstrings (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

I get it now. He's saying that Labour has got less stuff right and has therefore made more mistakes (ie. wrongs).

I thought he was talking about how the Conservatives would give criminals fewer rights. I couldn't figure out why he would want to give them more 'wrongs'.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

no. fewer rights for criminals, more "wrongs" ie, things that will not be tolerated:

"For the last decade or so, we have seen that vital, single-minded focus on crime-fighting disastrously diluted so the Home Office and the police too often see themselves as some kind of social service," he said.
