NWA versus Redbridge

I was over at LC's house this evening and some stoopid 'Top Ten' thing was on Channel4 about banned records, and there was an item about 'Straight Outta Compton'. According to this, somehow or other the Redbridge magistrate's court found itself in the position to ban the record under the Obscene Publications Act, but didn't thanks to an inspired performance by the defence. All I could find on this after a brief Google (NWA, Redbridge) was this from Hansard, 12 Nov 1991:

Niggers with Attitude Case

Sir Michael Neubert : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in the light of the judgment in the NWA--Niggers with Attitude--case at Redbridge on 7 November, he will bring forward proposals to amend the Obscene Publications Act 1959.

Mr. John Patten : I cannot comment on the decision of a court in a particular case. The Government recognise that there is concern about the effectiveness of the Obscene Publications Act 1959. This is traditionally an area for Private Members and the Government are prepared to support any suitable proposals for amendments which would make the law more effective and which appear likely to command sufficient public and parliamentary support.

Does anyone know anything more about this? Seeing as Redbridge is my neck of the woods and the old Polygram factory that was raided was just up the road from my house, I'm quite interested.

Apparently, one of the magistrates who had a lyric sheet greeted the defence with "Yo motherfucker! I don't think you've got a very good case." I'd put money on that being the ICHS latin master.

three years pass...
Order a hamburger, but replace the meat with a potato cake.
