do u like beer?
― swedes put dill on fields of salmon (fields of salmon), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)
toqué is really expensive, esp compared to APDC - latter is dfeinitely a better bet.
liverpool house yes, or joe beef. either one.
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)
ummm, so much though that im not really sure where to start in terms of recs. tell me what you like!
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)
i like beer but i do not LOVE beer toqué is paid for by work so $$$$ not an issue + it seems like a place to at least try - or is it really not worth it?
also any word on garde manager? mostly looking for places that serve something i cant eat in nyc which is why im into places that focus on locally-sourced stuff which is why my big must is apcd so... maybe more stuff like that? also breakfast places would be good
― Lamp, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)
DIEU DU CIEL for beer. The name is no exaggeration.

ok def check toqué if you can afford it! def.
garde-manger i wouldn't recommend, more of a scene place than a food place imo. but APDC = def. joe beef/liverpool = def. hmm what else... maybe salle à manger?
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:43 (sixteen years ago)
club de chasse et peche def worth checking out.
for brunch try my friends' new place, sparrow, or have the brunch at lemeac which is fantastic. dinner there is great too.
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)
Oh man I cannot wait to go to The Sparrow. I know I'm going to love it because it fills a big Sparrow-shaped gap in Montreal's food scene. A big, depressing gap. Next step: maybe some enterprising or foolish soul will make the connection between batter, fish, and hot oil and then, you know, try selling it to people. Sigh.

I dunno, Canadian immigration people have always been the biggest hardasses to me. Sometimes I fly home with Air Canada and have a layover in Toronto and always get GRILLED. Why am I here? Well, I have a flight to catch and will be leaving in 45 minutes, so I don't really think I'm a danger to your country.
― European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
Stayed at one of those boutique hotels by the water (one with awesome fucking room service), went to a ton of restaurants, bought a ton of records, hit that Miles Davis exhibit at the art museum, saw some sights and witnessed some of the glory that was Canada Day and the boiling heat wave that followed (if it had been any other type of vacation I would have dropped you a line, Slock). Don't recognize most of the places in that article but oddly enough I ordered all three things (foie gras poutine, duck-in-a-can, and seafood platters) mentioned being at Restaurant au Pied de Cochon. Even splitting the poutine and the seafood, this was in hindsight a bit too ambitious.
My only complaint was that I couldn't seem to get the right kind of iced latte and wound up hitting starbucks more than I wanted to.

― Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 10 January 2021 01:13 (four years ago)
Oh hey, I was gonna say: I actually tried a sour beer and I'm totally hooked. There are some fantastic ones available.
― fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 19:55 (four years ago)
Nice. Which one did you have?
― pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 19:57 (four years ago)
I think I've tried most of the sours available. Brasserie Shelton alone has four or five different ones.
It all started with a can of « La Poudre jaune » (by Lagabière) on a very hot day last summer. Couldn't believe how much flavour it had for only 3.5% alcohol. I'm pretty much obsessed with trying them all now.
― fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:02 (four years ago)
I haven't had any since I moved back. As soon as Dry January ends, I'll give La Poudre jaune a shot – I'm generally a fan of Lagabière.
― pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:05 (four years ago)
Everything Lagabière does is excellent.
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:40 (four years ago)
On a considerably less jovial note, this confirms what you were saying the other day:

― pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:42 (four years ago)
The sour I got the most mileage out of once I discovered them was the Hully Gully by Grand Bois. That's ultimately what a sûre houblonnée should taste like to me. Really well-balanced and with more kick than the 3.8% alcohol would suggest..
There's a watermelon and sea salt göse you can get at Peluso... I think it's Trèfle Noir? Holy hell on a hot day that's great too.
For a proper sûre houblonnée I recommend the Hully Gully by Grand Bois. It's probably the best gateway drug if I was trying to introduce someone to sours who is a fan of that Vermont kind of taste. It's got a bit of diesel fuel and freshly-mown lawn, but it's a sour all the way.
― fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:51 (four years ago)
I've only tried Grand Bois's Avant dimanche double IPA, which I absolutely love, so I'll be sure to give the Hully Gully a shot.
― pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:55 (four years ago)
What winds me up the most about the curfew is that it's been issued by a suburban/exurban provincial government who, if I'm not wrong, elected no seats in Montreal.
Literally no understanding of the difference between Legault World and contemporary Montreal, which is a city of nighttimes and for which this will disproportionately have a net negative impact on all sorts of completely normal behaviour.
Dog whistle, maybe?
― fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:59 (four years ago)
Maybe I'm paranoid, but it seems fairly obvious to me that this government was elected in no small part to punish the 514 aka Fauxbec.

― Boring United Methodist Church (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 11 January 2021 22:17 (four years ago)
My favorites for sours:
- Dunham (Dunham)- Harricanna (Montreal)- Grand Bois (St-Casimir)- Lagabière (St-Jean)- À La Fut (St-Tite).

I've got a nostalgic soft spot for that era, but we've come a long way, no doubt about it. Average dep selection is on a whole other level these days.
― pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 22:26 (four years ago)
im gonna keep an eye out for some of these next time i am picking up! i am lucky enough to live near an above average beer dep (not peluso level, but pretty good) and its maybe time for me to break out of my quar defaults which have mostly been like... cheap domestics and sometimes those archibald mix packs
― Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 17:10 (four years ago)

Absolutely heartbreaking. Note that this is the exact same argument deployed by these folks against allowing people of religious communities to wear whatever the fuck they want because "someone might some day pose as a bank robber and rob a bank dressed as a muslim."
Nowhere else is doing especially good right now, but there is a special type of infantile performance art exclusive to paleo-québécois groups like the QAC that really fucking wind me up.
