Did any of you get a DVD player in 1997? Or even before 2000? I think I bought my first one 3-4 years ago.

I saved up like a nerd for a while and bought one a few months after it was first released. My first DVD's were Taxi Driver (quality film), the Fifth Element (quality visuals), and 12 Monkeys (quality extras-including that amazing documentary).

The first time I ever watched a DVD was with my ubertech-obsessed pal, who wanted to show me the perfect movie to demonstrate its beatiful digital clarity and stunning audio. He chose "Waterboy."

Ooh, for the days when "interactive menu" was listed as a special feature...

I too had an ubtertech "get it all right now omg" friend who got a DVD player early on, wouldve been about 1999 I think. We watched "The Lost Boys" and I remember thinking how dated it was. Then we watched Gattaca.

Late '99, I think. A Sony DVP-S330 that I've since given to my parents. If memory serves, I bought Taxi Driver, The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Matrix with the player. It also came with a mail-in offer for five free DVDs: Stepmom, Lost In Space, Six Days Seven Nights, Lethal Weapon 4 and Stargate. I traded them in to Funcoland for cash. Would've kept Stargate, but it was one where you had to flip the disc over halfway through the movie, fuck that.

HA! When someone I knew bought one around then, I sent off for them because he couldn't be bothered, planning on trading them in as well. Only nobody in town would take them, as they had loads of them already. I did re-live Lost in Space. how bad was that?

Gukbe, Saturday, 24 March 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure those are the only movies you're allowed to watch in hell.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 24 March 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

I was buying DVDs of movies I wanted to own 3\2 years before I got a player...I knew if I had them on VHS I would be sad about it when I owned another shiny disc machine. But the drawback was I did not get to watch them for 3/2 years.

Weirdly enough I've gone through three DVD players now (the second and third also being my CD/mp3 players). I suppose the one in the Mac Mini makes it a fourth.

i just bought my first DVD player this year. it makes a loud whirring noise when a movie is playing :(

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 24 March 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

I went through three in the US, and three in the UK (not counting computer). The high number in the latter is due to finding all-region compatibility, and the reason for the former was that my first was a Zenith.

Damn that sucks, what brand is it? Even my old monster Sony never made noise, but it did have weird thing where the soundtrack would go out of sync in the middle of the movie and you'd have to press stop and play again to get it to realign. My current player is one of those Philips DVP5140 players that you can rig to play imports. Works pretty well, but it still has some strange idiosyncrasies, like on some discs the subtitles are automatically turned on or you'll get the circle with a line through it in the upper left corner for no reason. I used my PS2 and XBOX for DVD players in between the Sony and the Philips.

I still use my Panasonic player from 2000 that I paid $300 for (!). I've never had any problems with it.
