Good morning. New thread, made while you slept.

Jesse, Monday, 26 March 2007 07:46 (eighteen years ago)

Re-posted, because it shouldn't be missed.

Today:

-I saw a guy on the train with a hot pink button affixed to his WGN tote that read, "FUCK YOUR GOD."

-There was a guy beat-boxing at the Belmont train stop. He was amazing. His name is Jasper, and he was really friendly and talented.

-I discovered that there exists in this crazy, mixed-up world a fountain that dispenses Scope.

-I ate mussels and there was a bad one in the batch. :(

-I drank some Scope. :(

Jesse, Monday, 26 March 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

I liked it better when threads were just Chicago Number.

Jeff, Monday, 26 March 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

It's too early in the morning for naysaying. Go drink some coffee and get back to me.

Jesse, Monday, 26 March 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

I meant to credit Dan for this thread title.

Jesse, Monday, 26 March 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

The first post should have been this pic:

http://myspace-753.vo.llnwd.net/01378/35/74/1378134753_l.jpg

I was hungry the other night, saw him, and somehow didn't make the connection that I should have gotten tamales until he was heading out the door... So I went and got a taco instead.

dan m, Monday, 26 March 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

How did you know it was a bad mussel and what did it to do you?

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

You know, it started hanging out with the wrong crowd, took up smoking, got rebellious.

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

The weather is too nice. You guys didn't even go to work today, did you? You're all out playing golf.

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's beautiful out, and it's going to rain here the rest of the week it looks like. I'm a try to talk a girl into going to a park after work.

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

that shouldn't be such a hard sell

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

Unless she hates walking! And parks!

Laurel, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

well, diffrent strokes

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Nobody hates walking AND parks.

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

...

n/a, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

well, if it turns out that she hates walking and parks, you can still ask her to fuck in the bathroom.

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a try to talk a girl into going to a park after work.

any particular girl or are you just going to stand outside the supermarket asking whichever ones come out the door or something? also, allergies may play a role in hating walking in the park.

chicago kevin, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Nick, you can sit and drink beer in a park.

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

did you guys hear about the second police beating? i heard something brief about it on npr yest morning, but wasn't sure if i was imagining it all half-asleeplike.

businessmen this time

JuliaA, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i read about that on chicagoist today. there was alos an alleged third incident in wicker park. the wicker park one seems kind of weird, why would chicago cops drive from wicker park all the way to harvey just to drop some guy off? seems sort of fishy to me.

also, swank franks is closing! so is filter but i could give a flying fuck about that.

chicago kevin, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

(it is not a random girl, cause that would be crepey)

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'm okay with parks, I just hate walking. Walking makes it harder to smoke and drink coffee at the same time.

Laurel, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

GAWD PEOPLE STOP EXPOSING POLICE VIOLENCE DON'T YOU KNOW IT'S A STRESSFUL JOB?

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

THEY'RE REALLY NICE GUYS! NO, REALLY!

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Walking makes it harder to smoke and drink coffee at the same time.

not to mention chewing gum!

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

-There was a guy beat-boxing at the Belmont train stop. He was amazing. His name is Jasper, and he was really friendly and talented.

I know that beat-boxing Jasper dude, but his normal location is the Chicago red line stop. He's really annoying -- every time I run into him, I get earmarked as young, hip dude most likely to give him money and I get the exact some spiel, word for word, every time. Last time he got about 20% of the way in when I told him "i didn't give you money last time, and i'm not going to give you money this time. don't waste your time -- I don't want to hear it".

I realize it came out about 14x harsher than I intended and he looked really hurt as he sulked away. I felt like I beat a puppy.

mattttt, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

so what's up with swank frank and filter closing? Can't pay Wicker Park rent anymore?

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Bank of America is buying the building or something. Gentrification program... 85% complete.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

omg guys i miss the tamale guy so much :(

...how hard is it to make tamales??? could i become Montana's Tamale Guy???

river wolf, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

I love the bum spiel. Especially when it's an overly elaborate lie. It's especially fun the second time you hear it.

I think I got pegged as "likely to give me money" a lot more when I first moved here and I was green. I looked like a mark. Now I think I look too surly or indifferent for them to bother with me.

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Jeff and I were waiting for the bus in Hyde Park yesterday and a crazy guy who smelled a little more like pee than I generally like people who sit next to me to smell sat down next to me. He was quiet for awhile and then he said, "GOOD AFTERNOON, MA'AM" which I immediately recognized as the begining of a pitch and I was really not in the mood (just ask me for the GD money, okay? I'll probably give it to you) and I guess I made a very blatant not-in-the-mood face complete with eye roll and heavy, irritated sigh and to the guy's credit he said, "Oh okay, it's okay, sorry."

Then he started cackling at nothing that we could see at fairly regular three or four minute intervals which continue from Hyde Park all the way to Michigan Ave.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

:(

n/a, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've never made them, but it's like most other traditional Mexican food, from what I've heard... Easy to assemble but it time intensive.

dan m, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost to r.w.)

dan m, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

He also continued to smell like pee, making him the second person who smelled a lot like pee with whom we rode the bus in as many days.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

The bus guy, not Evan.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Well, maybe Evan. Who knows? Montana seems like the kind of place where you can sit around in your own urine for a few weeks.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i would make a fortune in this town

river wolf, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

(just ask me for the GD money, okay? I'll probably give it to you)

heh. See, I am not like that. I'm more like, "Don't bother with me, I do not hand out money on the street."

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

HAHA

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

lotta room out here -- no one really knows what anyone else smells like....

:|

B|

...until it's too late

river wolf, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

I have a strict policy against taking my wallet out on the street, but if I have change in my pocket (which I will sometimes put there for this very reason), I'll give it to the first person who asks me for it.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

I think it involves banana leaves?

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

and goodness. much goodness.

all i know about tamales is that they are awesome.

JuliaA, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

waht

river wolf, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

(I don't eat tamales often and I've never made them, obv.)

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

not banana leaves, corn husks. and yeah, intensive time commitment, but not difficult to make.

horseshoe, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Corn husks. You whip up some corn masa, make a little tube and fill it with whatever you like (really cheap pork is popular, but beans and veggies work great, too), and steam it. It's easy!

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

xpost What everyone else said!

kenan, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

It's not that easy, actually. It's a huge pain in the ass.

Jenny, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Shit that sucks Nick, I'm sorry. Times like this I'm glad to have a shitty stock system in my car.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Saturday, 7 April 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry too, but JVC OTM RE: stock system (with a broken volume knob in my case).

Jedi Mind Tricks was kinda crazy! Lots of people, multiple scuffles, including performers going after some crowd members who may or may not have dropped a bottle/glass on the stage!

dan m, Saturday, 7 April 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry dude. The sax player from the Kid J0rdan Second Line recently had his car stereo stolen too, window busted in and everything.

iTunes won't recognize my iPod all of a sudden, what the fuuuuuuuck.

Jordan, Saturday, 7 April 2007 07:12 (eighteen years ago)

That sucks! They may have picked your car because it was easy to break into. I used to have an 84 Olds Cutlass Supreme that you open by looking at funny and people were always breaking into that car and stealing exactly nothing, because I had nothing in there to steal, and I still always felt very violated and creeped out.

Jenny, Saturday, 7 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'm still up for recording today. Are others still interested? What time would be good? I'm free pretty much all day.

n/a, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I suggested 12:30 or 1 because I'm taking Kr to Working Bikes at noon, when they open, and it'd be convenient for me to stay in that general area.

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

I think 1:00 would be better for me because I'm going to have to drive to Ben's to pick up his practice space keys and I don't want to bug him too early.

n/a, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

OK.

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'll try calling dan and eric in a little bit if they don['t turn up here. Sarah isn't going to come, she's got a prety bad cold.

n/a, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

ERRRRRGH. NEVERMIND. Ben is on his way to Milwaukee for the day. Hence I have no way to get into the practice space. Sorry dudes. I'll try calling john in case he already left.

n/a, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

I guess if anyone just wants to hang out they can give me a call. Sarah is sick and going to sleep so I don't really have anything to do now.

n/a, Saturday, 7 April 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm getting my hair cut at three so that's when I'll be out and/or about. I'll try to do all my work now and then see what's happening after I'm done at the groomers.

Jenny, Saturday, 7 April 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, no problem, Nick. I just stopped in at a Kinko's to check this because I was away from home/phone/ILX this morn. Sorry to hear about the car stereo and the sick gf, hope the plants realign soon.

Eazy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Postponing playing is no biggie... I suppose I could do my taxes :P

dan m, Saturday, 7 April 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

So I'm sure I've asked about this before, but how do you create a .zip file of a mix? With single albums, it's easy to just go into File and Create Archive. But obv. songs on a mix aren't in the same folder on my hard drive. Do I have to change the name of the album and say they're all on a compilation? I could do that, but then they won't show up on their original albums anymore. Anyone?

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Btw, Kr and I saw Jeff, Jesse, and Courtney at Hot Doug's just now. I got the Cajun pork sausage with swamp sauce, smoked gouda, and fried okra, but with a veggie dog substituted for the pork sausage. Kr got the bacon sausage special.

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I got the antelope sausage and the bacon sausage. I actually got the very last bacon sausage they had, so the poor sap behind me (Jesse) couldn't get one.

Jeff, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

nick, sorry to hear about your car, but weird, i saw ben last night at ronny's. we talked for a couple of minutes, i don't think he remembered meeting me before.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 8 April 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

Leah saw Ben last night at Ronny's, too.

Eazy, Sunday, 8 April 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

Jesse, Sunday, 8 April 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

Whaddyou call that?

Eazy, Sunday, 8 April 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

Reunite

over ice

Eazy, Sunday, 8 April 2007 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

Rock shows can be so fucking dumb.

Jordan, Sunday, 8 April 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

(Show was originally four bands, one band breaks up and another cancels, two other bands fill in. Two touring bands play first (Bl4ck Fur and another band, both kinda sucked), then another band, then we don't go on until near 1 am. All bands play for like ten people, we only play 5 songs because it's so ridiculous. Then the original headlining band who broke up crashes and tries to get through a few songs. No one makes a dime.)

Jordan, Sunday, 8 April 2007 07:56 (eighteen years ago)

An Alton Brown-style ham currently resides in my oven.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_15538,00.html

dan m, Sunday, 8 April 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yum

That drink is a pear martini that we make at work. Courtney and I drank them last night at the HC. Tastes like pear nectar.

Anyone?

Someone should answer this since I can't remember either. PC users only, please.

Jesse, Sunday, 8 April 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Think outside the box.

Jeff, Sunday, 8 April 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a Mac user.

jaymc, Sunday, 8 April 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, sorry, Mac-only here too.

Laurel, Sunday, 8 April 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh. Well answer for John's purposes then. Anyway, I think I fingered it out.

Jesse, Sunday, 8 April 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I can't wait to see and taste that ham!! And smell it too, I'm sure. And touch, and hear it too--why not.

Jesse, Sunday, 8 April 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

John, I make a new folder on the desktop to hold the mix, then go to the iTunes library and highlight the song I want, then hit Command-R, which auto-opens the folder where the song is stored. Then I copy-drag the song to the mix folder. When all the songs are copied into the mix folder I usually just burn to CD but I think you could choose to Stuff it, too.

I'm pretty sure there's an easier way, Kenan will probably know.

Laurel, Sunday, 8 April 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Alert: Jewel has Riunite Lambrusco. But only in the giant bottle, so I didn't get any because omg I am not drinking an entire bottle of Riunite Lambrusco by myself.

Jenny, Sunday, 8 April 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Pussy.

Laurel, Sunday, 8 April 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

High five to your headband, Yenny! CUTE.

Weekend in Iowa was cooooooooold. We had an okay time. I drank some of the worst, weakest coffee to ever have been made -- it was so bad it tasted salty. It made me wince. But I had to pretend like it tasted good. I also drank some yummy homemade beer.

Hmmm what else. I spilled half a bottle of my favorite perfume oil on the bathroom floor. We would have scored 5+ pounds of venison if I had only remembered to get it out of the freezer on the way out of the house. I ate a Wendy's junior bacon cheeseburger for lunch today. In a nutshell, I am GLAD TO BE HOME, though sad to be sans wild game. :(

La Lechera, Sunday, 8 April 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks Laurel. That seems so intuitive, but somehow it never occurred to me.

jaymc, Monday, 9 April 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

No prob. I forget what the key command is for "copy-drag", though, and I'm on a pc at home so I can't verify. Alt?

Laurel, Monday, 9 April 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

I don't need a key command for that. I just highlight the song and drag it into the desktop folder.

Next question: How do I ensure the same track order? Do I copy the playlist's .xml file into the folder?

jaymc, Monday, 9 April 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, be careful -- if I've understood you correctly, you're moving the actual file to the new folder, removing it from the original place. Or at least that's what has happened to me when I've forgotten to hit the copy key. Check and make sure.

For track order, I usually re-name them with a numeral and hyphen before the title. I don't know of any other way.

Laurel, Monday, 9 April 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

So. much. leftover. ham.

dan m, Monday, 9 April 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

heh. We had an Easter Saturday w/ Julia's rents, and leftover ham this morning. I cubed it small and scrambled eggs with it. Delicious!

kenan, Monday, 9 April 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

So, uh, is my Netf1x experience fairly typical? I just signed up almost two months ago now and there's been a fairly major drop in the turnaround time for my movies from the first to second month. The first month, I would get notification e-mails about movies being recieved and the next sent out (both a couple hours apart) the day after I dropped them in the mail. Every time, for that first month. Since then? I haven't had a single one get turned around in less than four business days? Is this just standard Netf1x operating procedure? Hook you in for that first month (consisting mainly of the free trial), then dropping the turnaround rates to snail speed?

If I'd known this, I might have thought twice about signing up. It's fairly annoying.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 9 April 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, people in film threads have complained about that too, Jon, but I've never noticed anything like it in over a year of service. I go through movie phases, though, and haven't returned my movies for a couple of months now, but for a while last year I was watching two or three a week and arrived regularly on time, occasionally a day later than I expected but no worries. Better luck in future.

Laurel, Monday, 9 April 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't had any netflix problems either. It's only slow when I pick a really obscure movie that they have to ship from some faraway center.

I found a Hollywood Video last night that has the Wire and binged out for five hours. Done with season 2 (which was awesome!).

Jordan, Monday, 9 April 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I can't wait for Season 1 to get here. I also really need to watch the last Season of Sopranos so I can catch up to last night.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 9 April 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

I suspect -- mind you, I cannot confirm this -- that if you're the kind of person who's dying to turn over 20 movies a month, you are not profitable for Netflix, and they will begin to delay your shipping time a bit so you can't take such terrible advantage of them. What they want is for you to pay $20 a month for two movies that you never return.

kenan, Monday, 9 April 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone checked out what the Blockbuster online selection is like? Is it pretty much what you would see in the store (ie - gimme a break)? Are the movies censored? Etc.

kenan, Monday, 9 April 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, That show sounds bad, sorry. I've never played a supershort set just to get it over with, though I'm not 100% sure why, since those are the types of shows you don't get paid for anyway.

There was this club in Richmond my band used to play at that would schedule like 5 different bands for a Tuesday night, figuring at least one wouldn't show up. Then when we'd get there, they'd be like, oh, you guys have to figure out the lineup order. I was generally the rep for my band, going up against all these huge hardcore punk guys. And I don't remember ever getting paid for those...

My weekend was mostly horrific and I wish I could forget a huge chunk of it, though there were some up notes - hanging out with Ben & Amy Friday night before we discovered the stereo sadness, hanging out with Jeff & Jenny Saturday, and the awesome Easter brunch shindig yesterday. Cupcakes, pina coladas, Jesse stories, and a cute dog - oh my!

Jenny, I especially love that headband!
