East London Line Extension

With all the trumpetings about how this is going to be a good deal for the southeast and inner east of london, im confused by a number of things

1) it seems its going to join onto the silverlink north london line, and it will have a new name of Overground. this seems like nothing more than a rebranding exercise

2) the frequencies being talked about are not enough. the silverlink runs at pitiful 20 minute intervals, and at peak times is very difficult to board between hackney and...willesden? i read between 4 and 8 trains an hour will run on the ell

3) it seems the stations will be unmanned, for stations like canonbury, lonely and in near darkness, this doesnt inspire confidence.

4) the end of the victoria-london bridge southern loop?

The Silverlink is being taken over by TFL, hence the rebranding I guess. Silverlink is the name of the train operator in question.

Silverlink is already at 4 an hour between stratford and camden. When it is the overground it will be 4 to 8 trains an hour.

TFL will let the Overground concession in a simlilar way to the busses

New trains ordered, longer, more metro like based on the electrostars used by southern and south eastern.

ELL, WLL, SLL and NLL will form an outer circle

Victoria to london bridge will still exists but supplemented by Clapham Junction - Daltson via ELL trains.

thats right.

i was kinda hoping this would be a bit more than a rebranding exercise though, and need convincing its not

600, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

how will the trains be longer, with the shorter platforms at rotherhithe etc

600, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

and will the stations get some care, or will they be left like windswept car parks?

600, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Are they getting rid of the slightly silly dual-voltage setup?

Forest Pines, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

Trains have been bought are 3 and 4 car units, which can run in multiple, option to extend the 3 car trains at a later date.

Ed, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Stations will all be manned, and have gates and oyster, be give tube station levels of security etc.

Dual voltage will remain as NLL needs to remain 25kV for freight.

i dont see where it says they will be manned

600, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

I know the 25kV has to stay, but will they retain the slightly silly arrangement where a Richmond-Stratford train has to change voltage twice because there's a gap in the DC rails?

(and why did they put a gap in the DC rails anyway? Back when it was first electrified it was four-rail all the way from Broad St to Richmond)

Forest Pines, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Not terribly good practice to have long stretches of 750V DC and 25kV AC for cost and safety reasons, changing voltage hardly takes any time.

Ed, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm. I still think it's silly.

Is the NLL going to be used for Eurostar ECS moves from St P to North Pole when St P International is opened?

Forest Pines, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

NEXT STOP - DALSTON JUNCTION

All the people in that picture look like ghosts.

braveclub, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's like How the Dead Live!

Neil S, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

No because the eurostar depot will be at temple mills and north pole will close.

Ed, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Silverlink extends as far as Northampton, will the rebranded TFL be stretching this far then or are all our services switching to Brum < - > London stops?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

I love the artists impression composites. A typical London rush hour scene right there. I guess you wouldn't be able to see the nice vomit and chicken box-free floor otherwise...

blueski, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Hideous livery as always.

blueski, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot about Temple Mills. Duh.

Forest Pines, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Brum-London semi-fast is getting folded into either the new west midlands franchise I believe
