Or at least a Marvel teamup!

A movie wherein a spectral bouncy ball makes mystery clues via anagrams from floating around letters. Kids talking to homeless poets and getting foiled by foes in the school election. A world where you can type commands like this to your computer:

http://www.rickstv.com/tvo/gw1.jpg

And then omg crazy ghost response in a cutesified courier typeface!

http://www.rickstv.com/tvo/gw4.jpg

How the hell can I solve this weird code? With Ghostrider, hello.

http://www.rickstv.com/tvo/gw8.jpg

I was way too into this show. I had a pen necklace & wrote fanfic in my neighbors' barn after school. Where is the Ghostwriter love, y'all?

Totally awesome weirfness was always afoot:

Into the Comics: The team enters a scavenger hunt-style contest in order to win the chance to be drawn into an issue of Hoodman. Their efforts are hindered by an embittered comic book artist trying to win the contest on his own as his character, Stoop Dude. Meanwhile, Rob continues to be distant from the team, but makes friends with an eccentric homeless poet. David Patrick Kelly as Double-T and Spike Lee as Special Agent Pete make cameos in this arc.

Abbott, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Who is Max Mouse? A hacker invades Hurston School's computer mainframe, causing frequent fire drills, threatening messages, and altering the grades of Jamal and Lenni. The team gets a 'crash' course in the Internet in its cruder and more basic form, including chat rooms and bulletin boards, sending Ghostwriter through the computer and phone lines in an attempt to catch Max Mouse and stop his reign of mischief. Ellen Foley as Ms. Kelly, Greg Lee as Mr. Aucoin, and Julia Stiles as Erica Dansby guest star.

MAX MOUSE hax0r name supreme! Sadly, this arc was absent of rollerblades.

I so so loved this show. I think I actually had a teacher in middle school who let us watch it in class.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

max, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Their villains had the best names!: the THABTOs, Stoop Dude, Max Mouse, Big Ralph! Stoop Dude was also a more terrifying/nerdy Flava Flav/haxor blend!

Abbott, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

and what, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

I could swear it was "ManxMouse," but looking it up, it seems I've been wrong all these years. Man!

The best part about Stoop Dude was that he was ultimately in thrall to his henpecking Aunt Wilhelmina, but was (IIRC) largely kept off-camera and in the shadows, Dr. Klaw style, leading to this great disjunct between the plot points that gave him menace and the ones that completely enfeebled him.

I loved, loved, loved this show, although I definitely could sense it starting to veer off the rails (or maybe I was just outgrowing it?). As a rule, I either liked the entire story arc or didn't care for it at all, based on prejudices that probably had little to do with the contents. The mairjuana story just made me uncomfortable, and the less said about Lenni's terrible pop song, the better.

HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER THIS!!! for years afterwards I was terrified by the prospect of someone hacking into the school computer and screwing up my grades!

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

haha oh my god the pop song and music video. I still remember the chorus!

you gotta believe, and reach for the sky
you gotta believe, let your spirit soar high
nobody stands in your way
and your dreams can be reality... somedaaaaaaayyyyy

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

I so wanted to be Lenni. That or dreamy dark-haired poetboy who totally invented slam poetry with the dude who lived out of a grocery cart, like an inverse Finding forrester deal. OTOH, Lenni had her dead mom's copy of "Harriet the Spy," which I so envied because I loved that book and my mom, unfortunately, was never literate or dead.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

"When the show began, it was based around four main characters, all students at Zora Neale Hurston Middle School and Washington Elementary School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York. The "team" later expanded to include six (later seven) active members, one MIA member, one member in Australia, two members in England, and three members in 1928."

SRSLY MIND IS BLOWN

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

The 1928 episodes were Dickensian and creepy, like Wuthering Heights but no love triangle and with more hackers!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

haha i was just about to mention 'you gotta believe'!!!!

every now and then my little sister and i will sing this line to each other at random for major lolz.

k i just revealed my insanely large inner dork.

tehresa, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

I had the pen necklace too!

Dan I., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:09 (eighteen years ago)

I was very young when this was on and I think only saw the first series. Still, every time the Ghost Rider trailer comes on I always shout (in my head) "Ghost Writer! (word!)"
The only things I can remember about this are Lenni's song being a minute too short (?), them wanting to call their code word "bugger" and Jamal's breathless child acting "You... havetopromise.... nevertotell.... ANYone... bout Ghostwriter"

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone remember the episode where they found MARIJUANA CIGARETTES in alex's bag?

max, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE(s) of innercity gang shit. Oh noes ganj, jesus, do we really need the ghost to spell it out for you Alex? Just say "no," or as they say in Spanish, "no."

wtf @ "Sheldon Turnipseed"

http://www.rickstv.com/tvo/gwjamal.jpg

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 4 May 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

Sheldon Turnipseed plays Jamal Jenkins on the T.V. show. When he was just six years old he decided he wanted to be an actor. His mother ignored his idea, figuring he would forget the idea in a few days. But he didn't. Mrs. Turnipseed agreed to help him. I'm glad she did, because look at him now!

Like Jamal, Sheldon lives in Brooklyn, New York. And also Sheldon wishes to become a black belt in karate. He likes karate because he can use his mind and body. He also says that karate gives him more confidence. Both Sheldon and Jamal are a little bit stubborn so they are alike in many ways.

Sheldon is a good friend with David Lopez, who plays Alex Fernandez in the T.V. shows. They help each other memorize lines, they hang out together on the set, and sometimes they sleep over at each others houses. Basically they get along pretty well.

Sheldon likes girls who are smart, have a sense of humor and who are nice looking. He doesn't like people who are prejudice, and he doesn't like people who won't look beyond the surface.

But other than that he says he likes his life!

big hoos aka the steendriver reminds me of the kids from ghost writer

and what, Sunday, 4 May 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

I liked Ghost Rider...in the sense of it being the stupidest worst film of all time. Enjoyed every minute of it. My friends got me the DVD as a present when I left Dublin.

Ronan, Sunday, 4 May 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, third grade every friday I would come home and watch ghostwriter and then fire up the dialup modem and read weekly reader on PRODIGY

Fuck yeah PRODIGY man that was the only time in my life I trolled msg boards. When i was 11.

serious sockpuppet here (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

i used to love this show but I can't remember any of it past the basic premise.

Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

Ghost uses nearby letters to spell out things to six pubescent kids, who are the only ones who can read his words, in order to help them solve mysteries.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I thought you couldn't remember the basic premise. I hope that didn't seem condescending. I apologize.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

I like that Hoos and Crütz and I all like geek out over the same childhood shows and I am 4 years older than them. I came home from school every day and vegged out on PBS well past the point when I should have, ie freshman year of college still watching Wishbone.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

Ok Roman Polanski, why does your upcoming movie not have an anagram-making poltergeist who helps solve mysteries? The disappointment kills.

sedentary lacrimation (Abbott), Friday, 15 January 2010 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

I remain pleased with my entry on 1000 Movies/TV Shows that need completely unnecessary "dark and gritty" remakes :

956. This would be like CSI or something like that, but with an ongoing plot as a crack team of media experts gradually track down a mysterious and twisted serial killer, who (in a postmodern, Tarantino-esque move) composes his crimes only as pastiches of other, previously existing crimes. The team (a hacker, a journalist, a rapper etc) is assembled because the killer leaves his semi-legible clues of himself only on internet message boards, microfilm, newspapers, etc. His alias: Ghostwriter.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 15 January 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

Oh my gosh, your pride is well-earned!
