men wearing earrings

I don't think we've had a thread about earrings!

I first remember guys (boys) wearing earrings in the early 80s, but maybe that's because I was around 10 and that's when boys my age bugged their parents to have it done? It was a big deal to have it done in the proper ear because if you pierced the wrong ear it meant you were GAY. I forget which was the gay ear and which was the non-gay ear. Also rumor had it that it was the other way around in England.

Now it seems like the done thing is to have both ears pierced, although maybe this is a hip-hop thing and the rock thing is still only one, or not at all? Is anything other than hoops or fat diamond studs acceptable?

Right was supposed to be gay, left was supposed to be straight. (And ha, I remember that "it was the other way around in England" rumours, too.)

In my observation, flat medium-gauge plugs are a lot more common for white boys. Remember, plugs aren't 'earrings,' they're 'body piercings.' No homo.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

I considered bringing up plugs but you are right, they're not earrings!

teeny, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I used to wear two earrings in my left ear. I just sort of got bored of it about 18 months ago. Sometimes I miss them, but not much.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

i feel like you kind of need longish hair to pull off earrings if you're white; either that or have a big bull neck and a shaved head

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

In advanced old age, I am planning to walk with a silver-topped cane and wear a single teardrop pearl earring. I will be the best old queer ever.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit, EA. You really will.

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think this fellow may have something to say about that!

I had two on my left ear and one on the right. I removed them for a job interview and decided not to put them back in.

^^This was me last summer checking to see if the holes were still open.

Meant to say, this was after about 10 years of not wearing any. Holes in your face are permanent, just say no!

onimo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I had a yin-yang symbol stud in the left ear, late 80s to mid 90s, mainly to wind up employers and parents, but that got boring and it never seemed really to suit me, so it's gone now.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

c'mon men what are the most embarrassing earrings you wore as teens

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

I am in nicka's section.

I need ear/nostril/septum/lip/eyebrow piercings like I need a hole in my head. OH HO HO DO YOU SEE WHAT I DID THERE?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Oh--oh wait a minute, THAT IS A HOLE IN YOUR HEAD!!! MINDMELT GAHGHGHGHG!!!

Stevie D, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

dude i used to walk around with a red bandana in my back pocket for no particular reason!!

ha i didn't know what all that meant until recently.

my brother-in-law used to have a left-ear earring that said "fuck" in all-caps. he took it out when he first met my parents (i kinda wish he hadn't).

JuliaA, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

To people with rings in non-ear locations: do you ever get that "Oh, is that an earring in nose/lip/eeybrow/etc??"

Stevie D, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I enjoy how people start small talk.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

Guys, don't, please DO NOT wear those big loopy earrings. Horrendous. Especially in yellow hold.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I *knew* Onimo would have posted a picture of himself on this thread :-)

There used to be a guy hanging round our student union when I was a student who had a great big overstretched hole with a thing about an inch in diameter in it which must have distorted his lobes to unseen levels of fucked-up-ness. It looked really freaky. Sort of like this:

http://z.about.com/d/tattoo/1/0/8/7/hiramtunnel.jpg

Yikes.

ailsa, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yup. He said.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

What school did you go to?

Stevie D, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Those hooplobed guys (and girls, natch) are all over this burg. I keep wondering what they'll do when they decide to make more than $7 an hour.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

We were standing in a bank one time when we had a guy with those types of stretched earlobes. It was easy: just look through the hole to check if you were next in line.

i feel like you kind of need longish hair to pull off earrings if you're white

God no. You really don't. But as I said: NO MAJOR XL BIG LOOPS. So horrible. So utterly YUCK.
I like a small stud in an ear but overall I don't really care for earrings (on guys).

stevienixed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

I always want to toss sharpened pencils thru the hooplobes.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

there's a guy i've seen around providence, some aging scenester, who has big ol' stretched ears, "real savage like." providence has lots of body-mod going on, but ffs, you could probably fit your fist through the distended earlobe. WICKED GROSS, BRO.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Elmo - I think i know the aging scenester of whom you speak. When you say aging - how old are we talking? The guy I know is about 32 or so and he works at R0ck Star piercing which is above Nice Slice on Thayer.
Actually, one of my really good friends is the principal piercer there and has big plugs but not nearly as big as the guy I think you might be talking about. That whole scene in Prov is out of control. I went to the piercers christmas party and with two tattoos and a whole lot of ear piercings, I was the most "natural" person there!

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I know that guy!

also don't you get ear smegma?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

You do?! Funny. With plugs that big? Yes, they get horrible smega and it can be pretty foul. I have nice little hoops so can safely avoid the smegma.

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i think it's the same guy, 32 is about right i guess, but hard to tell. when i say "aging scenester" i typically mean "aren't you a little old to be wearing those plaid pants somewhere other than a golf course?"

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Oh hell's bells that is revolting.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

Pants description = defnintely the person I was thinking of.

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

i am completely unpierced and with no tattoos, myself. maybe some day.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

great big overstretched hole with a thing about an inch in diameter in it which must have distorted his lobes to unseen levels of fucked-up-ness.

Wait, these are plugs, right? That Elmo alluded to earlier?

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Well, if you ever do decide to get anything pierced - that place I mentioned earlier is amazing. They're all really great and know what they're doing. Best tattoo place around, believe it or not, is in Woonsocket.

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

at a certain diameter, i suppose you upgrade from the corked-bottle ear look to the the napkin-ring ear look

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

32 is aging, now? :(

Trayce, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

No shit, Trayce. I guess I'm dead, then.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

men wearing belly button rings

chaki, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

I took it to mean "aging" for a scenester, I guess. That's why I asked what his definition of aging was. I'm nearly 30 so I hope 32 isn't aging!

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Men wearing belly button rings = just pain wrong. That said, I'm not a big fan of them on anyone regardless of gender.

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

man wearing large gem stud in one ear = dud. but I have a personal bias on this one.

patita, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

It's only acceptable for awesome cyclists to wear earrings, obv.

Drooone, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

I've had earrings ever since I was 20. Nowadays I feel kinda naked if I'm not wearing them. I've always worn hoops of different shape and size, studs just seem to modest to me, and other types of earrings usually look kinda too girly on a guy. When I originally got my ears pierced I though I could wear a big hoop on one ear and look like Corto Maltese...

http://www.comicus.it/nerosubianco/uploaded_images/corto-maltese2-713534.jpg

...but when I tried those big hoops I realized I'd need to dress like a sailor in order to pull it off.

I dunno the company you keep, but I've always hung with punks and hippies and other alternative types, so different sorts of pearcings and stretched lobes and stuff like that seem pretty commonplace to me. For long I considered getting other facial piercings too, but to be frank I was too scared I wouldn't get jobs anymore after that, especially since I've mostly worked in offices instead of places that would be more liberal about these things. Maybe if I one day will become a paid gender studies researcher, I'll celebrate that by getting more piercings.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

oh hey crudders to thread, he rocks the look nicely.

teeny, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

He hasn't been around lately, has he?

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 March 2007 07:59 (eighteen years ago)

Almost all of the folkies last night were wearing earrings. And they were mostly clean-cut young boys with short hair (no beards!) and then hoop earrings, only in the right ears. Very curious. I wonder if it's a "thing".
