OK, problem solved. Like the rest of you, I guess I don't fuck enough.

'Also, you know, I wasted five years debating people on a bulletinboard I've now left, when, really, if I'd just looked at them, their faces and their bodies, I would have concluded "these people have the negativity they do because they can't get laid. I'm wasting my time trying to change they way they think with reasoned argument".'

onimo, Thursday, 29 March 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

Although I understand Momus's decision to leave, that particular insult is particularly beneath him. I'm surprised; a man that intelligent could have come up with something far more... Funny? Intelligent? Insightful? Incisive?

Not with a bang but a whimper.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 29 March 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

haha brilliant. one of the most wtf things that i encountered when i first got here was that people treated momus as a kind of famous person. i had never even heard of him, let alone heard his music. still haven't.

"these people have the negativity they do because they can't get laid. I'm wasting my time trying to change they way they think with reasoned argument"

So wait, Momus was actually Blount all along?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 29 March 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

He'll be back.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 29 March 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

He is Joachin, after all.

StanM, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

I always liked Momus, although wasting my time trying to change they way they think is a bit cuntish.

The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

I get laid enough OK thx by tllater

Tom D., Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

His Icky Sock album is pretty nice.

StanM, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I always liked Momus too, although I didn't agree with about 85% of what he said. At least all the little Asian women on ILX can come out of hiding now. "It's safe. He's gone!"

j-rock, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

I have a few of his albums, they're pretty good, "little red record" I like a lot.

LOL @ blogger hating on messageboarders for not getting enough action, WTF.

I wish he still posted here, I enjoyed reading the guy's arguments, though his ability to hold 2 seemingly opposing viewpoints at the same time could be super-infuriating.

Pashmina, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ah yes, the Tommy Boyd Technique which I myself have deployed on ILx over the years to great effect.

Now, did I mention ILX? They're all magnificently handsome over there, and fuck like rabbits.

StanM, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Now how could they possibly know that?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

The rabbit thing? No idea.

StanM, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

his ability to hold 2 seemingly opposing viewpoints at the same time could be super-infuriating

otm. at his best he was like a debate magician or sleight-of-hand artist, disguising reactionary sentiments in radical terminology or vice-versa, flip-flopping around his own arguments like a circus acrobat. or clown.

m coleman, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

ILX is going down like a sinking ship thanks to a few cold-hearted people. First you scare off Louis Jagger, now Momus.

Wrinklepaws, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

Soon there'll be no cold hearted people left!

onimo, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

That Momus response on his livejournal is a perfect representation of everything he does on ILX!

1. Using Web 2.0 as a term meaning the current state of the web where things are less "authentic," which repurposes a buzzword for his own anecdotal use. He then conflates this with a loss of supposed anonymity, muddying his own point instantly.
2. Pretends his kitchen sink style of argument is "reasoned," and somehow superior to how others argue. Remember the number of times he would be making what he claimed was a specific point, but what he actually said was all over the map?
3. Mentions equality multiple times, despite the fact that he'd never budge an inch in argument, only admitting that his argument was flawed or that he was toying with an idea at a later point. Obviously he could do this, because he's Momus, whereas when anyone else did it, they're closed-minded.

It looks like he later denies talking about ILX in the comments, which is probably confirmation.

and yet mickey remains. wtf people.

That one guy that quit, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

He's not even a proper blogger, that shit is a livejournal. Dude needs to get a Xanga to get laid proper if you know what I mean, dudes?

JW, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I originally typed "pseudo-blogger", but deleted the "pseudo" b/c I thought it was a bit much.

Pashmina, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

You might not think that a livejournal is a proper blog.

..But you'd be wrong.

mh, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

lol at ILX

HI DERE, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

I can't lol. I am too busy weeping into my unsated erection.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Why couldn't he just write a diss song like Uffie?

I am too busy weeping into my unsated erection.

That requires good aim.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

"That one guy that quit," who are you?

modestmickey, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

The best part is that I like Momus's commentary half the time, and the other half I realize he's trying to be delightfully infuriating (to challenge my cultural assumptions, no doubt) so I ignore him.

mh, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

tuomas + hat + eyepatch = momus ?

mh, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

This guy has been in my life for too long. When I was 14 I was forced to watch a video in Biology class featuring a club singer with a goldfish bowl on his head, whining about losing an eye through "bacteria". I didn't remember the name but that image (and the japes of my classmates) stayed with me. Two years later I find this board and HE'S HERE..... SPOOKY.....

JTS, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

haha Alan, you beat me to it (also g-kit, you know he was going to post that joke too)

nickalicious, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

...4. Makes reference to something someone else said (quick attempts to google what they actually said may or may not suggest this to be either wrong or wildly out of context), uses it to explain that the uncreative masses are scared of and oppress the beautiful artistic people, because in Momusworld if an attractive and well-dressed person arrived at a party and said "hey guys, I make music and you should come and see my art exhibition" everyone would be horrified and look for someone ugly with no dress sense to flock round adoringly and talk about accountancy with instead. Except not being Momus that second person still wouldn't get laid anyway, obviously.

5. Gets excited about technology empowering Everyman and overthrowing traditional gatekeepers despite general belief that Everyman is a dull artless drone and today's media bad and wrong for giving too much coverage to ordinary people (see epic Home Truths thread, or don't).

I still miss his posts. Well, a little. Not enough to read his blog or anything.

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

"these people have the negativity they do because they can't get laid. I'm wasting my time trying to change they way they think with reasoned argument"

So how did I become pregnant again? Maybe he realized that we couldn't score him any Japanese teenage girls for him.

nathalie, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

People could always just invade his blog if they take issue with his comment. He'd love that.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

I read his blog quite regularly, I like it. Now I like his music too, but I'm weird like that.

He's a Viv Stanshall for our times.

Ronan, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I also like the way when he made ILX breakfast, there would be no bits in the orange juice.

Ronan, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Momus was our mascott "celebrity" - now what will we do! Can we enlist Harvey Pekar?

Latham Green, Thursday, 29 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

momus is ghost rider, duh

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 29 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes I just want to take Momus and Bjork and breed them together. Then I would raise their spawn in Texas!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 29 March 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I think equality of opportunity (which obviously ties into the super-rich and the celebrity system) is bullshit. I want equality of outcome. And that involves situating people. For instance, to get equality of outcome for [insert minority], you have to see how being in that minorty really does affect all possible outcomes for them. It's "a difference that makes a difference". You can't help someone while wearing a blindfold that blocks the specificity of their problems and abilities. You can't level playing fields by acting as if they were already so.

this contradicts everything he has ever said about race prior to this

is jts for real??

deeznuts, Thursday, 29 March 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

I liked his tredd on 'what is a raspberry beret?'.

I miss the Momus, too. I never argued with him because my head is only 10% thoughts. This fact already has the new agers riding my ass and trying to realigns my chakra kahns. I though, "I would need 900% more thoughts to handle this guy."

I liked his ideas on FASHION!

I wish he'd'a lived in Juarez for a while and like recorded some tunes with La Llorona.

Dude, wo ist mein MOMUS?

-Abbott on Thursday, 29 March 2002 $0.00 (22 minutes in the future)

Abbott, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

I also liked that he redcommended living in a tube and just visiting the library and internet for media satiety, which is about 4% away from the life of the average homeless. Maybe 1%. If he supposed the people would be eating in nice restaurants, about 43%.

Abbott, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

i used to read his posts and picture someone wearing green tights who leapt around the room between paragraphs, this spectre had an annoying zarathustran kind of laugh.

ULTIMATE BLOGS

Masterworks From the Wild Web.

Edited by Sarah Boxer.

Illustrated. 343 pp. Vintage Books. Paper, $14.95.

But there’s too much stuff in this book that is, well, a snooze. I found it a chore to get through the excerpts from Click Opera, the dullsville blog of the cult musician Momus (né Nick Currie). What he does — the political-cultural landscape as seen through the eyes of an obtuse, arty person born in Scotland — is done a thousand times better by David Byrne, the former Talking Head, on his blog.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 23 March 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

obtuse, arty person born in Scotland

Momus counterattacks.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 24 March 2008 10:56 (seventeen years ago)

I personally can't stomach the lot of his posts (either here or on his blog). Whether or not I agree with him is out the window, it's just that his tone is so gray and autocratic. I'm always feeling this vague sense of scratching at my eyes and this stuffy, dulling of mah noggin.
