Every sock I'm finding either barely reaches the end of my heel or is somehow like 8 feet (roughly 2.5 meters for our British friends) long!! ARGH

What do you mean? Don't most British people still think in feet and inches?

Tom D., Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

I've never heard any British person say "I'm 1.8 metres tall" (I don't even know how tall that is)

Whatever happenned to Hands is what I want to know. The only thing that gets measured in Hands is horses. What's a metric unit of horse?

I see that my husband has been hiding all of your good socks, too.
I have all my single socks draped over the edge of the basket o' socks in my closet, waiting and waiting for the day their sole-mates return. Poor things. Lonely whaler's wives, pacing the widow's walk, waiting in vain for the ship that will never crest the horizon.
I have to go cry now.

Are you finding these socks rolled up in sealed foil packets? Do some of them have a foul-smelling goo on them?

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

Yup, socks can be emotionally draining to deal with.
But my boyfriend pointed out to me the other day that we regularly spend $50.00 on eating out, i think nothing of purchasing a $10 bottle of wine - and buying some new socks isn't really all that expensive or difficult.
I bought new socks and now I am very happy.

Learn to knit socks!

I am knitting socks!

And it's great!

TOE UP IS THE WAY.

I want a bottle of wine that costs £8ish. I think this is a bit too much. It is a LEITZ REISLING. Where is ilx wine thread...

I solved Mr Unruly's lonely sock problem. I threw away ALL his socks, and replaced them with plain black ones in exactly the same style. Those are now the only type I ever buy for him, so they ALL MATCH. It's de-stressed my life tremendously.

C J, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

no because the socks are never exactly the same size nor shade of black - even if you buy one of those superbulk packs of 20 from Poundstretcher.

I've given in and simply bought loads of wacky colourful ones from Topman, but mostly so they can't be mistaken for my flatmates' socks.

i've been trying to find normal, non-itchy rag-looking socks for years now to no avail ;_;

mookieproof, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

They match well enough - I did the replacement sock experiment a couple of years ago, and they still look okay. Admittedly I throw all the black socks in the washing machine together every six months or so and run a hot wash with a packet of black Dylon in it, so they always look good as new and don't fade.

You're thinking of the continentals.

Mark C, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, Beth, you have reminded me that my parents' house has a widow's walk, even though the only water within sight is White Lake and the only boats on it are either fishing or racing in the Sunday regatta. Perhaps we should put it to better use; when I was younger I always dreamed/wished it had a trap door BUT ALAS, there is no real access.

Laurel, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

does it help one to keep track of socks if they are kept "together" when hanging them to dry? i have heard this theory. it doesn't seem like it make any difference.

So I am.

Here I sit two hours later in one golf sock and one too-small ankle sock (the meaning of "barely reaches the hell"). I won't die from it. But CJ's idea is rather brilliant and I might have to do it.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

When I was 15, I thought it'd be cute to start wearing a black sock on one foot, a white on the other. The black went on the left cause I'm a leftist, duh.

6 years later, if I don't do it, I feel the teensiest bit off. Never have trouble finding a matching pair, though.

Plus some stripes in other colors and a few black ones. Best socks ever.
