Two Questions About Food

1. How many ways of spelling 'Humous' are there? I can think of at least 4 without trying, and 2. Are the any foods that your parents told you that you would learn to like when you grew up and this has turned out to be true? I still can't eat liver, but I am now fine with gravy.

alix, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Asparagus. Artichokes. I still get them confused and have to think "oh yeah artichoke hearts", so my mum was wrong about learning to tell the difference.

Choler, Phlegm, Blood and BLACK BILE!

Tom, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My parents never told me that I would learn to love phlegm.

alix, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kebab, kebap, kebob etc: this is an orthography thing, tho isn't it? kemal ataturk modernised the language in 192x, so BLAME HIM!!

i still hate whisky, which my dad drank muchly and i remember trying small mark s (small mark s's sistah's response at the very same time: "tastes like puddin dun't it!?")

mark s, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aubergine, I hated it when i was a kid (mainly cos all Mum ever did with it was stuff it with savoury rice) now I absolutely wuv it. Courgettes too, most green vegetables come to think of it.

chris at home, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked all food indiscriminately when i was a child. now i can't stand the smell of meat, or the smell or cows milk, or the smell of butter, or the smell of eggs, let alone the taste of these things.

di, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

LETS DO IT WITH CHICKEN!

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. All I know is that when I order falafel and ask for extra "hummous", I ALWAYS feel that I'm subtly mispronouncing it. 2. Basically everything. Though now I hate peanut butter, which I used to adore.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. I know of humous as hummus or humus. It's the mashed up garbanzo beans you're talking about, right?

2. Yeah, my parents said I would learn to like coffee... I think it's alright. They said I would learn to like spinach (love the stuff now), mushrooms (liked them, then made myself not like them because my sister wouldn't eat them, but then got reaccquainted and now we both love them), brussel sprouts (they're not bad), dark chocolate (I did, but now I can't eat chocolate...), and probably some other stuff I've forgotten about.

kimera, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Katsup"... is this the same as KETCHUP?

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alix I swear I have already done this second question.

Sarah, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HUMUS - noooooo! THat's worm poo!

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

By which I mean that the word spelled "HUMUS" is worm poo, as proved by science. Hummous itself is tasty food. mwah. Proof = FALAFEL KING on portobello road.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Falafel King used to be called Pitta the great? or is it just my false memory syndrome playing up again?

chris, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pita the great is near Falafel King. Pita the Not-so-Great I call it. hur hur hur. DO YOU SEE, ect

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mushrooms - parents were right
Fish - parents were wrong

("Ketchup ... Katsup ... Ketchup ... Katsup... Ooh, I'm in way over my head here")

Jeff W, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, sorry. Didn't realise you'd asked it already. Before my apology is made official however, I will need documentary proof.

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

unbelievably i did not like CURRY as a small child! proof if proof were needed that children are FULES.

katie, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chemotherapy made me a very fussy eater as a small fry. I couldn't stand egg yolks, for a start. Now I eat just about anything except for livery things.

suzy, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is something distinctly wrong about liver. I can't put my finger on it. Or eat it. Unless pate.

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tis the texture methinks. hence pate is ok, liver not. i didn't like foie gras when i tried it, but even cheap pate in those plastic sausages = num.

RickyT, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My parents never told me that I would learn to love phlegm no neither did mine but my Biology teacher told be that people who have colds are better nourished because of all the phlegm they are constantly swallowing. I do not believe this.

Are the any foods that your parents told you that you would learn to like when you grew up and this has turned out to be true? yes, cooked carrots (I could only eat them raw when I was a kid) and spinach.

There is something distinctly wrong about liver It is often overcooked. My mother always used to overcook it.

MarkH, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no actually the problem with liver is that is has spent a lifetime filtering all the nasty bits out of some poor livestock animal's BLUD. still not as bad as kidneys which process wee, urgh...

katie, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kidneys = num num and at least they haven't had cowshit smeared over them like organic veg ;)

RickyT, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hum RickyT you may not wash your veg but I do... usually *mutters*

katie, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why would organic veg have cowshit on it? (unless manure) And, anyway, if it does, Tesco wash it off for me. Anything else madam?

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tesco! Are you backing the Other Side Lixi?

Emma, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

manure = largely cowshit

RickyT, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

re washing of veg: well kidneys haven't still got piss inside them have they?

RickyT, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whole heartedly. I am scared to go into detail on a public forum though, as I think I've already said too much and the S***s**r*'s secret police are already monitoring my posts. Basically, the management is rubbish. Nice people, good products, rubbish management, pissed off staff.

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Liver and kidneys are BOTH yum.

Sarah, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tesco Acre Lane is much better quality than Sainsburys By The Tube also. BAD SAINSBURYS BY THE TUBE although yore spring oniongs I picked up last night were yummy.

Sarah, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i bet they have got piss in them.

katie, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry Sarah i mean the kidneys not your onions!

katie, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Liver and onions yumyumyum. Gravy and potatoes in a big brown pot. Fish of all descriptions, especially smoked. Fish roe. Baby squid like lychees eat 'em whole, boys, eat 'em whole. Sprouts, parsnips, kale and all manner of ghastly greens. All of these things I now love, as my ma and pa said I would.

Hate baked beans tho. Won't touch them. Loved them as a kid.

misterjones, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Right. Going to go and get a proper breakfast now.

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Overcooking of live r is a big no-no. Lovely braised, but mainly I treat it in exactly the same way I treat steak. Flash fried, nice'n'rare.

Great in stir-fries too.

Pete, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything pertaining to the vegetable world. It took me a couple of years to realize that I ate stuffed peppers quite often as a kid - seeing the waxy green & red skins would put me off on 'em, but sly mom slides the stuffing out of the pepper, and Dave eats them like candy! (Oh, Mom, you devil.)

(Which reminds me - I cannot STAND chocolate anymore. I used to ADORE chocolate. I would swallow full-sized easter bunnies whole. Now, my body rejects such confections like a monkey's heart. Lactose intolerance plays a wee role in this, I'm sure. Swallowing head- sized gobs of cocoa-flavored goodness in toto could also play a part in this tragic turn of events.)

David Raposa, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tomatoes in my case. I now appreciate the tart zing they have. Garbanzo beans, lima beans and peas, however, remain vile.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have this little rule: if I've had it operated on, I won't eat the animal equivalent. So no tripe or kidneys for meeeeeeee.

suzy, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Ned on the Tomatoes.....when I was little I would get furious if there was even watery tomato runoff on any part of my burger patty....now I love them.....but I don't know about the 'zing' factor...it has no zip or kick or whatever at all....it's watery, muted and slightly uncomfortable...when I hated them, the taste seemed vaguely connected to the impulse that told me to be ashamed when I smelled my bad breath saliva & snot on my sleeve or pillow when I had a cold, the smell of not playing in the dirt bathless for 3 days straight and not washing my dick, or acknowledging the hypocritical part of your brain that makes bizarre and sometimes outright vile body/oral/coochie odor tolerable and even sexy if the chick's *face* looks right....etc. Am I alone here? Tomatoes are on some primal naked psychological scent/taste reaction shit

Ramosi, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

correction: not playing = playing.

That would also be a great title for Chris Rock's avant-garde HBO special, whenever it finally drops

Ramosi, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Try Roma tomatoes. It's goodness.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or Grainger County tomatoes outside Knoxville. my sister still won't eat even a piece of lettuce with what she calls "tomato slime" on it. but then again this is someone who at the age of 24 doesn't like STRAWBERRIES. Pfft.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll look out for Romas and Graingers then.....Tracer you need to show your sister the video for Janet Jackson's "Again"....."girl don't you want to live like that?"

Ramosi, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Garbanzo beans, lima beans and peas, however, remain vile

garbanzo beans is american-speak for Chick Peas, is it not? but life without chick peas would be a poor life indeed - no chana masala, no chickpea and aubergine stew, and *fainting* no HOUMMOUS!!!

katie, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Anyone ever noticed that, if you start eating in an office full of people, everyone else seems to get hungry really fast?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

By the same logic if you start making very public love to a coworker you end up at #8 on the seaside postcard thread.
