I am looking at going to one of Ljubljana/Slovenian Coast, Dubrovnik/Split/Croatian Islands, maybe Montenegro??

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Are you interested them as holiday destinations, or as sites of conflict?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Preferably the former.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

This is the 21st Century, Dirty Vicar. We are living in conflict and on the spoils of conflict. So let's go on holiday!

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

my roomate went there a while back, he came back saying it was the most beautiful place with the most beautiful women he'd ever seen. he wanted to buy a vinyard and move there. i'd put you in touch with him but he's kind of a skeeze.

gff, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

where in particular did he go?

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

I've been to the croatian islands, Veli and Mali Losinj, pretty gorgeous as I recall.

Matt, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

From where did you embark to said islands?

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

ive never been to montenegro but that would be my choice every time

600, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

I thought this would be a thread for ILXors living in California to chat about shit.

Jordan, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

me too, 600. But complicated/expensive to get there from London. Either an expensive flight/layover in Budapest or a ferry from Ancona/Bari.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

how long is the ferry from bari?

i figured montenegro mightn't be quite as easy as it should be just yet, but from central london it surely can't be any more difficult than blackheath?

600, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

also look at Plitvice in Croatia - could be the Amazon!

That's soooooo..."300"!

The ferry is roughly 10 hours.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

300?

hmm 10 is kind of long when you factor in that bari prob isnt that convenient either

600, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

what about the top end of the adriatic instead, you could fly into trieste with ryanair?

600, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I meant 600! I confused you with the film 300. No, I only considered that Ryanair goes to Bari but yes, at what point is it simply not worth it? I have read that Britons are now buying property in Montenegro and that reasonable direct flights will surface sooner rather than later. Sadly, this is only going to be a short break so I may consider Split or Ljubljana instead.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Trieste is a possibility. Also Zadar. I am looking less at Zagreb, because of the time constraints and because I want to be on the coast.

Ljubljana's a nice little town. maybe a little quiet, but still, a capital and colleges, quaint and not so bombed out in the center. Zagreb felt a little desperate, but that was 10 years ago.

jergincito, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm...quiet, you say? Thank you, I'm putting that in my file.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

ljubljana i remember feeling...swiss, its nice, ...quiet

600, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure what I think about quiet. Sometimes I'm an exponent of quiet, but in this case I'd like something...more.

This Lake Bled looks like something out of a dream.

Dubrovnik is stunning.

Very touristy though.

have been all through Slovenia, and also visited Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik) and Sarajevo in Bosnia. amazing trips, probably the fondest of any i've done. and my number one no doubt about it recommendation is DUBROVNIK. it is a fucking wonder. visit in late spring or early fall (i hear it gets a little mobbed [and v hot] in the summer). amazing, amazing, amazing. and the drive south from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik is the most remarkable 3-4 hr drive of my life. going from frostwintry ruined Sarajevo through loping mountains, past desert-like land and orange sellers and then finally in the pseudo-mediterranea of Dubrovnik. amazing pasta and ice-cream (sladoled!) and seafood.

zagreb's pretty great too, but much more of the glasgow/montreal/oxford slightly-industrial-but-pretty side of things. amazing small Gallery of Naive Art there. when in croatia definitely get a burek (available throughout eastern europe and even turkey, but croatia's the only place where the standard 'burek' is an amazing delicious huge cheese one).

food is great, people are friendly, things are cheap and it's GORGEOUS.

bled was nice, but nicest to visit and not necessarily to base a holiday around. most amazing thing in slovenia are the unesco world heritage site-identified CAVES. or maybe that crazy mountian pass.

sean gramophone, Sunday, 1 April 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

If you go to Slovenia, do you get to hang out with Laibach? That would rock.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 1 April 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

thanks, sean gramophone.

I will visit Laibach and play the ironic jewboy to their ironic nazis.

admrl, Sunday, 1 April 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'm sold on Croatia, though.

admrl, Sunday, 1 April 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

Has anyone been to Tirana? I’m thinking of a short break there. It looks like it has some interesting museums.
