― sean gramophone, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)
so is Vince solidly back with Ari or still with that stupid woman he was fucking? I didn't watch all of the last season and only caught some repeats; it was seriously slumming
― Vichitravirya_XI, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)
does anyone else have the problem of not being able to buy a minute of the Drama/Turtle interaction when they are alone on screen? it's like every line has quotes around it
― Vichitravirya_XI, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)
i think we discuss that in this thread
― gr8080, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:13 (seventeen years ago)
this show has sucked since season 3, i'm said to say. what a lot of sad flailing.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)
lol xp
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)
FINE, i'll actually read the thread before posting on it
― Vichitravirya_XI, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)
yeah end of season 2 is ari getting fired, drama between e and vinnie, even the promise of turtle dating new new right? i remember thinking then that this was gonna turn into an actually good show instead of just enjoyable fluff. it never did turn into a good show and now it can't even muster up the direction to be enjoyable fluff.
― balls, Thursday, 24 April 2008 05:11 (seventeen years ago)
Dude who plays Billy Walsh is going to be in the new season of 24.
― James Mitchell, Thursday, 24 April 2008 07:22 (seventeen years ago)
So assuming that Vinnie was created to be a contemporary of Tobey McGuire and Leonardo DiCaprio, what should happen now is for him to run up against a Shia LaBoeuf, someone who isn't an easy antagonist but in a competitor. Ari has Josh Weinstein, Vince needs his equivalent, maybe even someone who's a younger actor but is directing and wants Vinnie -- and suddenly can Vinnie avoid being Johnny Drama? Should he grow up? And that would lead into a fine Sex in the City-like six-episode Season 5, part 2 mini season to wrap the thing up until the debut of Lloyd! in May 2009.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)
i thought it was a pretty good show!! then it turned into a bad one

thank god, maybe that'll keep that character away from the show. i mean srsly one arc was enough, dude did NOT need to become a series reg.
yea, season 2 was sweet, first part of season 3 also iirc.
xpost

What happened with both Entourage and The Sopranos is that the network ordered more episodes than originally planned (lots more for Entourage -- something like 22 instead of 13) and so the story arcs that were already planned had to be padded and some new, mostly self-contained episodes had to be written and put together quickly.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)
not really a problem w. the sopranos, but the last batch of entourage was kind of repetitive and tapped-out.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)
good that billy walsh's film was hated though: hopefully it won't get a release and he'll disappear and they can do something not involving him.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
I liked early on that Billy Walsh was representing the crazy L.A. auteurs of the 70s, combined with a little Rick Rubin, who could psychopaths or genuises or both. His best moments were the Medillin tattoo, when the guys had to go through his mom or girlfriend to get to him. But now, yeah, get a new type in there; maybe David O. Russell.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
who could be psychopaths, etc.
yeah, barring them actually taking the extra time afforded by the writer's strike to think up some non-dopey new jokes/plots, i'm really dreading the fact that Season 5 will suck, and that I'll probably watch every episode anyway. I hate to be one of those people that goes "The Wire is over, I'm cancelling my HBO," but really the movies are the only thing keeping that on my cable bill right now.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
i thought billy walsh was basically supposed to be paul thomas anderson (who worships the 1970s school of dysfunctional coketard auteurs), what with the marky mark connection but yea.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
The other thing with Walsh (obv) is that he's the ultimate insider who fancies himself to be the unsullied ultimate outsider -- and his best moments were the ones where he couldn't quite get away with that pose.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
I think the show's greatest dramatic triumph is that I apparently identify with E as the protagonist so much that I hate Walsh as much as he does.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)
i never want to hear about "mdellin" again
― s1ocki, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)
i mean medellin
that was drawn out wayyyy too long
― s1ocki, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)
in retrospect, though yeah a lot of his stuff is played, a show about ari gold and a large roster of talent might have worked better in terms of varying the scenario.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)
nah, I would not watch Broadway Ari Gold: The Series.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)
Having Mrs. Ari get back into soap-opera acting was a good subplot.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)
yeah I liked her tits too.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
sloan(e?) should return
― Upt0eleven, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)
not really
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)
malcom mcdowell should return, that shit was tight. and adam goldberg.
too much ari, that shit was getting sitcommy. they should really focus on the core of the show. piven was getting too central i thought.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)
Sloan is in this week's Entertainment Weekly, starring in some summer romantic comedy.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)
the core of the show has become drama and turtle's stupid errands tho. piven has become too central to this version of entourage, because it's not meant to be about him. but at the same time there were recent eps where he was the only good thing in it.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)
If the producers pushed all their chips in (raising the stakes while somehow keeping it a comedy) we would see:
-aforementioned dabbling with Sc1entology from Vince -Johnny Drama suicide attempt -Turtle discovers hard drugs, or aids and abets someone who does -Eric finds new set of friends
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
ok the scientology idea is awes
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
You should write for the show. Two things, who the hell is Dom? Vinny's from NYC who went to jail? Also, I assumed Billy Walsh was based on Vincent Gallo the last episode seemed to be an homage to the Brown Bunny showing.
― Mr. Goodman, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)
totally misread that as "Turtle discovers hard drugs, or AIDS" at first
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)
yeah Dom was the ex-con buddy played by Herc from The Wire.
OK, OK, let's work with that. Turtle finally has a chance to score with some beautiful gal, but she demands that he gets tested...and he and Drama go to the clinic to get tested together...and then Turtle gets the results for some other HIV-positive guy named Turtle...and he has to tell the beautiful gal that he's positive...and Drama starts rethinking the choices he's made in life...and then it turns out that it was some other Turtle who tested positive and he's really OK and they all go out to dinner.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)
wait, you guys want actual, believable plots and characters from this show?
― gabbneb, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)
do you eat steak for dessert?
― gabbneb, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)
funny situations, springing from characters and/or plots, are part of what's required from television comedy, yea.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)
the funny is important, but incidental to the good-times male-identified lifestyle pron
― gabbneb, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)
Walsh is totally Vincent Gallo. At least that's how I always saw it.
― James Mitchell, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
That's where the episodes where Aquaman was potential but not sealed were great at balancing their shopping with the stakes that came from them being broke.
― Eazy, Thursday, 24 April 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
I try not to think too much about "Billy Walsh"
― gabbneb, Thursday, 24 April 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
gallo hasn't worked as close to the studios as walsh. they are both self-regarding dicks though and character-wise i can see it.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)
walsh is there for people who give a shit about things like story arcs and de palma movies
― gabbneb, Thursday, 24 April 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)
you know it seems sort of likely to me that billy walsh is a "composite" character based on many different real-life directors
― max, Thursday, 24 April 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)
