Do you mean grievance as "complaint?" Feeling wronged? I probably do but I prefer to forget about it.

nathalie, Monday, 2 April 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I was thinking abt it in terms of "complaint" yes.

Sometimes it's really enjoyable as long as the grievance isn't too serious! Minor irritations are a good way to get riled up and awake and snapped out of a fog.

Laurel: interesting that you think that; I have suspected that a lot of ppl think that, tho it is rarely stated overtly.

I think I get a sense of unease when everything appears to be going perfectly. Having a nice minor grievance is a good way to have *something* to fret about that doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.

I mean, I don't like moping around about something over time, being the offended party is a huge, life-sucking waste in any long-term sense plus victimhood is boring...but I like snapping about things like cyclists riding on the sidewalk (HI DERE MY SUNDAY MORNING) or visible panty lines or whatever! Cf my entire ILX career. :D

v wise, tho this can be quite tough to let go sometimes.

Sometimes, that annoyance provides a sort of energy if you're feeling a bit slothful. The problem is that it tends to grow (for me, anyway) into a great big mental-energy sucking OBSESSION and then I don't like it so much.

i had this insane long-drawn-out beef with my local council, and though i won on reflection it was too much hassle to be worth it. better to let them win sometimes.

work in a restaurant, or any customer service job, really, and then you'll know just how much some people like having a grievance.

modestmickey, Monday, 2 April 2007 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I can honestly say that I prefer to be grievance-free at this point in my life.

Jenny, Monday, 2 April 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Life is so much better, so much more pleasant and enjoyable and stree-free when you don't have grievances. It's not even the big, overwhelming things that make life seem like a shower of shit, but the little petty things that spring out of nowhere. They are the things you feel like you *should* have some control over, and to not have control over them leaves you feeling more like they are a grievance.

I wish the cops would seriously pay attention to my calls about the neighborhood ice cream truck that sells drugs. And that's all!

Abbott, Monday, 2 April 2007 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

blueski, Monday, 2 April 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

you seem like the kind of guy that would have a long drawn out beef with the council

The ice cream truck uses "Do Your Ears Hang Low," a tune originally known as "Zip Coon"!

It is quite common for people to feel acute dissatisfaction about some large and important aspect of their lives, such as their love relationship, their job, or their financial situation. If these large irritations appear to them to be unfixable without creating an even more painful dislocation in their lives, they may choose to let them fester for quite a while.

Under those circumstances a person may latch onto a petty grievance and milk it for all it is worth, as it gives them an outlet for feelings that are otherwise too difficult to face. The trouble is that all the energy they spend pursuing this small grievance will not alter their fundamental problem one jot and is essentially futile.

Me, I prefer to work on the big stuff directly, however painful it may feel at the time. At least this feels like progress of a sort.
