Cupboard

A cupboard (IPA: /ˈkʌb.ə(r)d/) is a type of cabinet, often made of wood, used indoors to store household objects such as food and crockery, and protect them from dust or other form of miasma.

Cupboards were originally covered. Recorded use of such a name dates back to at least the Middle Ages. For the last few centuries, "cupboard" has referred to a storage area enclosed by doors.

An airing cupboard is a domestic room more usually resembling a wardrobe in size and proportion, although sometimes large enough to be considered a small room, and which houses the boiler in a central heating installation. Shelves (usually slatted to allow for circulation of heat) are generally positioned above the boiler to provide storage for clothing, typically linen and towelling. Generally the purpose is to prevent damp rather than to dry wet clothing. It may also be called simply a 'boiler cupboard' and by certain regional names. In Ireland for example a common term is hot press.

The Chremonidian War

The Chremonidean War (267 BCE - 261 BCE) was fought by a number of Greek states against Macedonian domination.

The origins of the war lie in the continuing desire of many Greek states, notably Athens and Sparta, for a restoration of their former independence along with Ptolemaic desire to create troubles for its rival Macedon. Ptolemy Philadelphus's ambitions in the Aegean were threatened by Antigonus Gonatas's fleet, so he carefully built up a coalition against Macedon in Greece. He especially cultivated Athens by supplying her with grain.

The anti-Macedon faction in Athens, led by the stoic Chremonides, took power and war was declared against Macedon (possibly as early as the autumn of 268 BCE). The campaign season of 266 BCE was indecisive but in 265 BCE Antigonus won a decisive victory outside Corinth in which the Spartan King Areus I fell.

After that Athens was besieged and finally starved into surrender in either 262 BCE or 261 BCE. Philadelpus had failed to send aid to Athens and his fleet was defeated off Cos (probably in 261 BCE).

After the fall of Athens, she lost all vestiges of independence and was garrisoned until 229 BCE.

milk

Milk is the nutrient-rich liquid secreted by the mammary glands of female mammals (including monotremes). The female ability to produce milk is one of the defining characteristics of mammals. It provides the primary source of nutrition for newborns before they are able to digest other types of food. The early lactation milk is known as colostrum, and carries the mother's antibodies to the baby. It can reduce the risk of many diseases in both the mother and baby.

The exact components of raw milk varies by species, but it contains significant amounts of unsaturated fat, protein and calcium. Aquatic mammals, such as seals and whales, produce milk that is very rich in fats and other solid nutrients when compared with land mammals' milk.

Humans, like other mammals, can consume mother's milk during their infancy. In many ethnic groups, people lose the ability to digest milk after childhood (that is, they become lactose intolerant), so many traditional cuisines around the world do not feature dairy products. On the other hand, those cultures that do tolerate milk have often exercised great creativity in using the milk of domesticated ruminants, especially cows, but also sheep, goats, yaks, water buffalo, horses and camels. For a millennia, cow's milk has been processed into dairy products such as cream, butter, yoghurt, ice cream, and especially the more durable and easily transportable product, cheese. Industrial science has brought us casein, whey protein, lactose, condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food-additive and industrial products.

Human milk is fed to infants through breastfeeding, either directly or by expressing the milk to be stored and consumed later.

The term milk is also used for non-animal substitutes such as soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, and coconut milk, and even the regurgitated substance pigeons feed their young, called crop milk, which bears little resemblance to mammalian milk.

flush toilet

A flush toilet or water closet (WC) is a toilet that disposes of the waste matter by using water to flush it through a drainpipe to another location. Modern toilets incorporate an 'S' bend; this 'trap' creates a water seal which remains filled with water between flushing, thus providing a hygienic barrier by preventing sewer gases from passing up the drainpipe. During flushing the 'S' bend also provides siphon action which helps accelerate the flushing process. However, since this type of toilet does not generally handle waste on site, separate waste treatment systems must be built.

Picalilli

Piccalilli is a pickle of chopped vegetables and hot spices, generally mustard. Ingredients may include green tomatoes, cabbage, gherkins, cauliflower and onions, but virtually any type of vegetable can be used. The vegetables are cut to small pieces, blanched and covered with a mixture of mustard, vinegar, salt, sugar and spices, such as turmeric, which is responsible for the bright yellow colour of many piccalillis.

It is usually served as part of a Ploughman's lunch or as a topping for meat, often hot dogs and hamburgers. The recipe appeared in the 18th century with unknown origin, possibly English or Indian. The term "paco lilla" appears in some editions of Hannah Glasse's The Art of Cookery to describe an apparently related recipe for a ginger-flavored pickle used for various vegetables. The story is though that it was invented by Napoleon's chef when he didn't have any sauce to add to a dish.

Piccalilli mixed with mayonnaise or crème fraîche is often the basis of remoulade, a popular condiment in Denmark.

Pat and Mick

Pat and Mick were a British vocal duo consisting of popular radio personalities Pat Sharp and Mick Brown. The royalties from their record sales were donated to Capital FM's Help A London Child charity.

The pair were often portrayed as a couple of prats by the media, but the record-buying public lapped it up, providing much needed money for the charity in the process.

With their last single released in 1993, and Pat Sharp no longer at Capital Radio, they have no immediate plans to collaborate on future charity singles.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I was looking at the history log to see if Pat and/or Mick had put in that incredidbly bitter prats/lapping it up bit, and discovered that the entry was edited by erstwhile ilX0r Robin Carmody.

The importance of self-doubt
But underneath all this there is a recurring self-doubt and questioning: what if I'm wrong? And what if they're right? What if "they" - the Wikipedia vandals, the livejournal trolls - actually have a point? What if the arch-poptimists and proud depoliticisers have found the key to life itself, and what if I'm as far from it as I've ever been?

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

the importance of self-abuse.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of which...self-abuse

Self-abuse may refer to several things:

i Masturbation, although it is a largely obsolete dysphemism. (Religious views are the only views in which self-abuse applies, as medically it is perfectly healthy.[Meaning there are no know sexually transmitted disease associated with this activity. But psychologically it brings about a condemnation that will cause an individual to become introverted. Causing more illicit self-abusing sexual activity.])
ii Self-harm
