original day of the dead is sh1t3!! lead actress is half the time on the verge of laughing at her own lines. the main military baddie ruins every scene he's in. which means like 3/4 of the movie. "listen LADY..." granted, there is a very entertaining john goodman impersonator in there. but NOTHING HAPPENS. the only really good thing - and it is quite good - is the zombie who gets acculturated. he is amazing to watch. but then... nothing happens!

oh so... the remake already came out?
john goodman impersonator
LOLOL

i hear it's pretty awful, with flying and spiderman-like zombies. dear oh dear

Romero originally had a much bigger story planned for DAY OF THE DEAD, but budgetary restrictions meant the whole thing had to be scaled back almost at the last minute. That does give the film a slightly broken quality - and as alwaysv with Romero's work, a lot of the performances are indeed pretty ropey - but to call it shit and say that 'NOTHING HAPPENS' (in capitals, no less) seems to me a VERY (in capitals, no less) hasty/sleepy judgement (I'm guessing, Tracer, that you watched yesterday's late night BBC2 showing, which may even have been cut.) I particularly like: the whole underground/bunker/paranoid atmos that oozes right through the film, and the feeling of people being literally at their wit's end; the way that the incredibly tense/disturbing zombie roundup process is repeated twice (so that we see it done the 'correct' and, inevitably, 'incorrect' way, leading to uncontainable chaos and personal tragedy); and the sheer viciousness of the final zombie attack on the mad military man - CHOKE ON 'EM, indeed.

diary of the dead was embarassing

day of the dead has some ridiculous acting, sure, but it's got its own charm (and the great stuff that ward mentions).

Original DotD is awesome.

Ugh, Diary of the Dead was absolutely terrible. Romero, I love you man, but it's time to retire.
The original Day of the Dead was great, certainly the weakest of the original trilogy, but still quality. There's a hell of a lot of time devoted to people arguing, but it's all fairly engrossing (if a bit hammy). Great atmosphere, as Ward points out, holding it together. Also notable for having some absolutely fantastic gore effects. Savini was in top form here.
I believe the story goes Romero had a choice between an R rating and a larger budget or free reign with a smaller budget? It's a shame that his EPIC ZOMBIE FILM had to be the horribly disappointing Land of the Dead.

^agree with every word circa

just watched this 'remake'. It's not a remake that's fur sure.
but i found it to be more entertaining than most other half rate zombie flicks.
― Ste, Monday, 11 August 2008 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
absolutely fantastic gore effects
god this is true. the shovel through the head was the high point for me, remember that? it goes clean through the skull, slicing through the mouth, the top half rolling away into the corner and as our heroes make their escape it sits there, blinking helplessly
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 11 August 2008 22:22 (sixteen years ago)
the first zombie you see in the original DotD is one of the best ever
― Ste, Monday, 11 August 2008 22:28 (sixteen years ago)
Diary of the Dead was quite good. Rongness to the max.
The original Day of the Dead starts out ok and then......zzZZzzzzZZzzzZzzzzZzz for a while, and finishes strong.
but Mena Suvari? who next, Jason Biggs in a remake of Return of the Living Dead?

and while I'm at it, for no apparent reason, I just wanted to say Fulci's Zombie (or Zombi 2, for purists)....was boring and overrated, and had lousy pacing.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:28 (sixteen years ago)
fulci's strength lies in his horrible pacing.
― Fetchboy, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:37 (sixteen years ago)
Was that the one on the island, which ends with zombies walking along brooklyn bridge? had a nice scene with a lady removing her clothes on a boat i remember, but yes a bit crap.
― Ste, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 08:16 (sixteen years ago)
That would be great!
Zombie Flesh Eaters has the best pacing of any Fulci movie! I like he comedy music when the woman takes her top off on the boat.
